Teacher Perceptions Of Parent Involvement In Literacy Education, Wayne M. Linek, Timothy V. Rasinski, Donna M. Harkins Dec 1997

Teacher Perceptions Of Parent Involvement In Literacy Education, Wayne M. Linek, Timothy V. Rasinski, Donna M. Harkins

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Parent involvement appears to hold great potential for the improvement of literacy education. Without the coordination and support ofthe classroom teacher, however, the effects of such involvement may not be maximized. A question central to the development of parent involvement programs is, "Do teachers recognize and support parent involvement as a significant component of children's education?" The purpose of this informal study was to describe perceptions of parent involvement in literacy education. Over sixty teachers from a cross section of schools in a Midwestern metropolitan area were interviewed in depth about their attitudes toward parent involvement in reading. A structured …

Literacy Lessons From The Childhoods Of Authors, Marcia Baghban Dec 1997

Literacy Lessons From The Childhoods Of Authors, Marcia Baghban

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The retrospectives of authors' childhoods can provide courageous portraits for children. Their examples demonstrate how reading and writing helped these professionals not only survive illness, loneliness, and rejection, but also forge meaningful lives. Children need to hear their stories, and so do adults. This piece reviews the role that literacy played in the childhoods of Eudora Welty, Madeleine L'Engle, and Jack London, and contrasts aspects of their childhoods with aspects of contemporary childhoods. The contrast sounds a clarion call to today's adults to assume greater responsibility for how children spend their time.

"Daddy, Read To Me": Fathers Helping Their Young Children Learn To Read, Robert W. Ortiz, Laurie L. Mccarty

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Parents' involvement in their young children's early reading development is reported to be an important prerequisite to school success. Much of the research on parents' contribution to early literacy development has focused on mother-child interaction. Less is known about the role of fathers. Fathers, however, report that they want to be involved with their children's literacy development when given opportunities to do things they feel are interesting and capable of doing. Studies indicate that fathers' involvement with early literacy activities range from reading recreation-related materials to assisting their children with school assignments. This paper provides background information concerning research into …

Domestic Relations, Barry B. Mcgough Dec 1997

Domestic Relations, Barry B. Mcgough

Mercer Law Review

The survey year produced a wide array of appellate opinions with no discernible area of focus. Of particular interest were decisions holding that the relocation of a custodial parent is not alone grounds to change custody and that notice of trial by publication alone contravenes the due process rights of a pro se litigant in a divorce action in which custody of minor children is at issue. A resident can sue for divorce and an award of Georgia property even though the nonresident spouse has never been in the state. However, a resident cannot enforce a foreign divorce decree when …

Real Property, T. Daniel Brannan, William J. Sheppard Dec 1997

Real Property, T. Daniel Brannan, William J. Sheppard

Mercer Law Review

This Article surveys the case law and legislative developments in the Georgia law of real property from June 1, 1996 to May 31, 1997. The authors do not endeavor to chronicle every case decided or address each action by the Georgia Legislature during that period. Instead, they focus on those cases and statutory enactments that are likely to have some particular significance for legal practitioners in their day-to-day practice or that establish some new principle of law. During the past year, some of the more significant developments in real property law have come from the legislature, including the passage of …

Three-Dimensional Camera Calibration Technique For Stereo Imaging Velocimetry Experiments, Mark D. Bethea, James A. Lock, Frank Merat, Paul Crouser Dec 1997

Three-Dimensional Camera Calibration Technique For Stereo Imaging Velocimetry Experiments, Mark D. Bethea, James A. Lock, Frank Merat, Paul Crouser

Physics Faculty Publications

A three-dimensional camera calibration technique is developed by combining two, 2-D camera calibrations for an orthogonal stereo viewing geometry. The left camera view (YZ view) and the right camera view (XZ view) are calibrated separately and then combined to produce an XYZ (3-D) calibration routine, Our technique employs three parallel calibration planes. One is placed along the main diagonal of the cubic experimental chamber, and the other two planes are placed known distances in front of it and behind it within the chamber. Both cameras view the calibration points on the planes simultaneously. Given the coordinates of a number of …

A Framework For Reaching Agreement On Climate Change: Morals, Self-Interest, And Strategy, F. Ted Tschang, N. S. Murthy, K. S. Kavi Kumar

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper examines why negotiations following the Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC) have stalled and makes suggestions on how to circumvent the obstacles. In particular, the paper: - illustrates how current barriers to international agreement on climate change (CC) decompose into the separate components-self-interest, morality and strategy and discuss how the recent country positions are mixing them. - discusses some elements of a conceptual framework that will serve as a benchmark for assessing the feasibility of a proposal for a CC agreement. - discusses a few modest proposals that could potentially end the current stalemate, and also the potential …

Protecting Surface Transportation Systems And Patrons From Terrorist Activities, Research Report 94-04, Brian M. Jenkins Dec 1997

Protecting Surface Transportation Systems And Patrons From Terrorist Activities, Research Report 94-04, Brian M. Jenkins

Mineta Transportation Institute

Contemporary terrorists have made public transportation a new theater of operations. Algerian extremists set off bombs on the subways of Paris in 1995 and 1996; the Irish Republican Army has waged a long running terrorist campaign against Britain’s passenger trains and London’s subways; Palestinian terrorists have carried out suicide bombings on Israel’s buses; and an individualor a group calling itself “Sons of the Gestapo” derailed a passenger train in Arizona in 1995. Islamic extremists planned to set off car bombs in New York’s tunnels and bridges in 1993 and in 1997 they plotted suicide bombings in New York subways. The …

Changing The Rules: Arguing Against Retroactive Application Of Deportation Statutes, Anjali Parekh Prakash Dec 1997

Changing The Rules: Arguing Against Retroactive Application Of Deportation Statutes, Anjali Parekh Prakash

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

By failing to prescribe its temporal reach, section 440(d) of the Anti-Terrorism Effective Death Penalty Act (AEDPA) has created confusion for the courts. Does the provision apply to individuals who committed a crime, making them subject to deportation before AEDPA was passed? To individuals who were convicted prior to AEDPA? To those in deportation proceedings when AEDPA was passed? To those who had already applied for section 212(c) waivers when AEDPA was passed?

Using section 440(d) as a case study to analyze these retroactivity issues, this Note opposes the Attorney General’s interpretation and instead proposes an antiretroactivity presumption applicable not …
