Upper Extremity Joint Mobilization, Carolyn Brown Jan 1997

Upper Extremity Joint Mobilization, Carolyn Brown

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Musculoskeletal injuries are one of the most costly nonfatal pathologies in the United States. Eighty to 90% of persons afflicted with musculoskeletal dysfunctions will require a treatment other than surgery. Manual therapy is a system of techniques which may be used to ease the pain and dysfunction with which these patients present. The purpose of this paper and the accompanying video tape, is to provide the physical therapy student with a source to aid their study of upper extremity joint mobilization. The paper presents a brief history of manual therapy, beginning in ancient Thailand and Egypt and ending with the …

Does Lack Of An Insurable Interest Preclude An Insurance Agent From Taking An Absolute Assignment Of His Client's Life Policy?, Johnny C. Parker Jan 1997

Does Lack Of An Insurable Interest Preclude An Insurance Agent From Taking An Absolute Assignment Of His Client's Life Policy?, Johnny C. Parker

University of Richmond Law Review

To understand any concept it helps to know the purposes it serves and the objectives it seeks to achieve. The maxim that one "must have an insurable interest in the life or property insured" has haunted insurance law for centuries. This doctrine conditions both the validity and enforceability of insurance contracts upon the existence of an insurable interest in the person who purchases the policy. The considerations which underlie the insurable interest requirement are generally expressed in terms of public policy: (1) against allowing wagering contracts; (2) against fostering temptation to destroy the insured property or life in an effort …

Annual Survey Of Virginia Law: Domestic Relations, Deanna D. Cook, Player B. Michelsen

University of Richmond Law Review

The General Assembly did not take any action regarding the Family Court issue in 1997. In 1996, funding for the family court was delayed until June 1, 1998, subject to state funds being "sufficient to provide adequate resources ... for the court to carry out the purposes of [Virginia Code section 20-96] and to fulfill its mission to serve children and families of the Commonwealth."

The Innocent Owner Defense To Civil Forfeiture Proceedings, Peter David Houtz Jan 1997

The Innocent Owner Defense To Civil Forfeiture Proceedings, Peter David Houtz

University of Richmond Law Review

The Constitution of the United States prohibits the deprivation of "life, liberty, or property, without due process of law." The Constitution also expressly states that private property may not be "taken" by the government without "just compensation." Seizures and forfeitures of personal and real property without notification or hearing and without compensation have, however, become a powerful tool used by the government to deter crime.

Finding The Pearl In The Oyster: Strategies For A More Effective Implementation Of Virginia's Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act, Patrick J. Skelley Ii Jan 1997

Finding The Pearl In The Oyster: Strategies For A More Effective Implementation Of Virginia's Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act, Patrick J. Skelley Ii

University of Richmond Law Review

Since our nation's infancy, the Chesapeake Bay ("Bay") has been one of Virginia's natural treasures. The Bay is America's largest and historically most productive estuary, valued today as an economic resource, a wilderness sanctuary, and an aesthetic asset. Every year, commercial fishermen harvest blue crabs, oysters, and a multitude of fish species in mass quantities to satiate our desire for seafood. Nature aficionados can observe ospreys, laughing gulls, and other shorebirds taking their share of the Bay's bounty. From the -shoreline, quiet vacation homes overlook the waters across coves and inlets. Despite these idyllic images, the Bay has been facing …

The Age Discrimination In Employment Act At Thirty: Where It's Been, Where It Is Today, Where It's Going, Howard C. Eglit Jan 1997

The Age Discrimination In Employment Act At Thirty: Where It's Been, Where It Is Today, Where It's Going, Howard C. Eglit

University of Richmond Law Review

Thirty-three years ago, in the course of debating the legislation that eventually was enacted into law as the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Congress began-albeit very tentatively-to address age discrimination in the workplace. While it rejected attempts to amend the 1964 bill to include age within the then-pending menu of proscribed bases for workplace decision-making, i.e., race, color, national origin, religion, and sex, Congress did direct the Secretary of Labor to undertake a study to ascertain the nature and extent of age bias in employment and to make recommendations for dealing with this discrimination, if it in fact existed.

Rmesh Algorithms For Parallel String Matching, Hsi-Chieh Lee, Fikret Erçal

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

String matching problem received much attention over the years due to its importance in various applications such as text/file comparison, DNA sequencing, search engines, and spelling correction. Especially with the introduction of search engines dealing with tremendous amount of textual information presented on the world wide web and the research on DNA sequencing, this problem deserves special attention and any algorithmic or hardware improvements to speed up the process will benefit these important applications. In this paper, we present three algorithms for string matching on reconfigurable mesh architectures. Given a text T of length n and a pattern P of …

Varietal Differences In The Total And Enantiomeric Composition Of Theanine In Tea, K. Helen Ekborg-Ott, Andre Taylor, Daniel W. Armstrong Jan 1997

Varietal Differences In The Total And Enantiomeric Composition Of Theanine In Tea, K. Helen Ekborg-Ott, Andre Taylor, Daniel W. Armstrong

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Theanine is the main amino acid component in tea. It usually constitutes between 1 and 2% of the dry weight of the tea leaves. It is as prevalent in tea as all other free amino acids combined. Both enantiomers of theanine were found to have a similar sweet taste, with little or no aftertaste. It was found that black and half-green teas (except for Formosa Oolong) contained as much, or more, theanine as green teas. No correlation was found between the absolute concentration of theanine in tea and its enantiomeric composition. An inverse correlation was found between certain grades of …

Immunologic And Hematopoietic Effects Of Cd40 Stimulation After Syngeneic Bone Marrow Transplantation In Mice, Satoshi Funakoshi, Dennis D. Taub, Miriam R. Anver, Arati Raziuddin, Osamu Asai, Prakash Reddy, Helen C. Rager, William C. Fanslow, Dan L. Longo, William J. Murphy

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

CD40 is a molecule present on multiple cell types including B lymphocyte lineage cells. CD40 has been shown to play an important role in B cell differentiation and activation in vitro, although little is known concerning the effects of CD40 stimulation in vivo. We therefore examined the effects of CD40 stimulation in mice using a syngeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) model in an effort to augment B cell recovery after high dose therapy with hematopoietic reconstitution. After the BMT, mice were treated with or without 2-6 μg of a soluble recombinant murine CD40 ligand (srmCD40L) given intraperitoneally twice a week. …

Toward A Theory Of Effective Supranational Adjudication, Laurence R. Helfer, Anne-Marie Slaughter Jan 1997

Toward A Theory Of Effective Supranational Adjudication, Laurence R. Helfer, Anne-Marie Slaughter

Faculty Scholarship

Supranational adjudication in Europe is a remarkable and surprising success. Europe's two supranational courts -- the European Court of Justice (ECJ) and the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) -- issue dozens of judgments each year with which defending national governments habitually comply in essentially the same manner as they would with domestic court rulings. These experiences stand in striking contrast to those of many international tribunals past and present. Can the European experience of supranational adjudication be transplanted beyond Europe? Professors Helfer and Slaughter argue that the effectiveness of the ECJ and the ECHR is linked to their power …

Mound-building activity and air temperature were not significantly related.

Vegetation Dynamics At The Gerald Gentleman Station Mitigation Site, Lincoln County, Nebraska, Michael P. Gutzmer Jan 1997

Vegetation Dynamics At The Gerald Gentleman Station Mitigation Site, Lincoln County, Nebraska, Michael P. Gutzmer

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Gerald Gentleman Station (GGS), located in southwestern Nebraska near Sutherland, is the newest and largest electric generating facility in the Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) system. In August 1994, NPPD constructed a 9.2-mile long railspur between GGS and the Union Pacific Railroad to create competition in the coal-hauling market. A multi-objective criteria analysis was used to identify a railspur route with the optimal combination of low environmental impact, favorable engineering characteristics and economic feasibility. Based on jurisdictional delineations, the GGS railspur impacted 1.95 acres of wetlands. Construction ofthe wetlands to mitigate for those impacted acres was initiated during winter 1993-94 …
