The Economics Of Prefunding Social Security And Medicare Benefits, Martin Feldstein, Andrew Samwick Jan 1997

The Economics Of Prefunding Social Security And Medicare Benefits, Martin Feldstein, Andrew Samwick

Dartmouth Scholarship

This paper presents a detailed analysis of the economics of prefunding benefits for the aged, focusing on social security but indicating some of the analogous magnitudes for prefunding Medicare benefits. We use detailed census and social security information to model the transition to a fully funded system based on mandatory contributions to individual accounts. The funded system that we examine would permanently maintain the level of benefits now specified in current law and would require no new government borrowing (other than eventually selling the bonds that are officially in the social security trust fund). During the transition, the combined rate …

Matching Numerical Simulations To Continuum Field Theories: A Lattice Renormalization Study, J Borrill, M. Gleiser Jan 1997

Matching Numerical Simulations To Continuum Field Theories: A Lattice Renormalization Study, J Borrill, M. Gleiser

Dartmouth Scholarship

The study of nonlinear phenomena in systems with many degrees of freedom often relies on complex numerical simulations. In trying to model realistic situations, these systems may be coupled to an external environment which drives their dynamics. For nonlinear field theories coupled to thermal (or quantum) baths, discrete lattice formulations must be dealt with extreme care if the results of the simulations are to be interpreted in the continuum limit. Using techniques from renormalization theory, a self-consistent method is presented to match lattice results to continuum models. As an application, symmetry restoration in ϕ4 models is investigated.

Predicate Clefting In Kisi, George Tucker Childs Jan 1997

Predicate Clefting In Kisi, George Tucker Childs

Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper examines the focus construction of Kisi, an Atlantic language (Niger-Congo) spoken by some half a million people primarily in Guinea but also in nearby Sierra Leone and Liberia. The data come from work done in 1983-84 on the southern dialect spoken in the Foya area of Upper Lofa County, Liberia. Of particular interest is the presence of what has been known in the literature as "predicate clefting'', e.g., DeGraff 1996. Its interactions and complementarity with negation, an inherently focusing construction (Marchese 1983), evince some complexity. Despite some superficial similarity, however, substantial syntactic differences exist. More similarities exist in …

Greening Our Cities: An Analysis Of The Benefits And Barriers Associated With Green Roofs, Stephanie Beckman, Sev Jones, Kevin Liburdy, Connie Peters Jan 1997

Greening Our Cities: An Analysis Of The Benefits And Barriers Associated With Green Roofs, Stephanie Beckman, Sev Jones, Kevin Liburdy, Connie Peters

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

This document investigates green roofs as one piece in a larger strategy that should be taken to maintain the health of the natural environment and the quality of life experienced in Portland. By adding more greenspace to urban areas, green roofs have the potential to bring substantial benefits to our community through mitigating some of the negative impacts of development.

The conclusion reached regarding the feasibility of a widespread implementation of green roofs is that the barriers are not insurmountable (with the exception of retrofitting cost for intensive roof gardens in some cases). What is lacking, beyond a need for …

Cyclic Amp And Its Receptor Protein Negatively Regulate The Coordinate Expression Of Cholera Toxin And Toxin-Coregulated Pilus In Vibrio Cholerae, Karen Skorupski, Ronald K. Taylor Jan 1997

Cyclic Amp And Its Receptor Protein Negatively Regulate The Coordinate Expression Of Cholera Toxin And Toxin-Coregulated Pilus In Vibrio Cholerae, Karen Skorupski, Ronald K. Taylor

Dartmouth Scholarship

Insertion mutations in two Vibrio cholerae genes, cya and crp, which encode adenylate cyclase and the cyclic AMP (cAMP) receptor protein (CRP), respectively, derepressed the expression of a chromosomal cholera toxin (CT) promoter-lacZ fusion at the nonpermissive temperature of 37 degrees C. In the classical biotype strain O395, the crp mutation increased the production of both CT and toxin-coregulated pilus (TCP) in vitro under a variety of growth conditions not normally permissive for their expression. The most dramatic increase in CT and TCP was observed with the crp mutant in Luria-Bertani (LB) medium pH 8.5, at 30 degrees C. El …

Adolescent Suicide Prevention Programs: From A Suicide Victim To A Survivor, Chikako Webb

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of the study was to identify effective adolescent suicide prevention programs. Three major causes of adolescent suicide in Japan were discussed: (1) intense pressure of examinations to enter schools; (2) peer bullying; and (3) teacher violence toward their students. Suicide in Japan's past, education reform and moral education, and bullying were also addressed. Features of existing suicide prevention programs were examined. This was followed by a description of two successful prevention programs: (1) successful counseling system as professional help; and (2) desirable educational system including proper communication. Conclusions and implications for parents, teachers, and school administrators of this …

Speeding, Spending, And Sponsors: Tourism And The Nascar Winston Cup Experience, Mark D. Howell

Visions in Leisure and Business

This article provides an overview of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series and an analysis of how stock car racing has become a focal point for tourism in the region around Charlotte, North Carolina. The article examines how businesses have capitalized on the loyalty and financial strength of Winston Cup race fans by making themselves spin-off attractions connected loosely to the sport of stock car racing.

Evidence to support claims made in this article comes from the author's fieldwork within the Charlotte-based Winston Cup community. This includes observations made by the author during the summer of 1997 while in North Carolina …

A Framework For The Analysis Of Sport Sponsorship And The Cola Wars, Duarte Morris, David L. Groves

Visions in Leisure and Business

The primary purpose of this article was to explore the concept of understanding sports contribution to sponsorship through understanding the structure and function of the sponsorship industry. The colas were selected as an example industry to develop the concept of understanding sponsorship using a molecular analysis. This type of molecular analysis will provide perspective and foster better relationships of how the sponsor can do business on the sport and its event. Sponsors are demanding accountability and this type of approach opens the dialogue for exploring symbiotic relationships among the sport and the sponsor.

Task 1c3 Humanitarian Demining Requirement Analysis Final Report, Cisr

Global CWD Repository

The Humanitarian Demining Information Center (HDIC) at James Madison University is developing a plan for identifying, analyzing, enhancing, and disseminating electronic and hard copy information relating to humanitarian demining. The first step toward realizing this objective was identifying the information needs, information availability and optimal methods for organizing and delivering information to the humanitarian demining community.

Broadly conceived, the humanitarian demining community consists of ten components.

    • U.S. government agencies that have as part of their mission the development of programs for humanitarian demining in selected countries • volunteer organizations that are directly involved in the task of humanitarian demining …
