A Proposed Animal Model Of Clomipramine-Induced Posttraumatic Stress Disorder., Linda Louise Beeler Jan 1997

A Proposed Animal Model Of Clomipramine-Induced Posttraumatic Stress Disorder., Linda Louise Beeler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Clomipramine (CLI) administered to neonatal rats has been purported to induce behavioral abnormalities in adulthood analogous to human endogenous depression (Vogel et al., 1990). Based on recent findings (e.g., Beeler, 1994; Goodman, Beeler, & Birkle, 1995), wherein CLI animals were shown to have neurobiological correlates distinct to humans diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the current study was proposed to investigate whether CLI induced alterations might be more analogous to, and a model for, PTSD. The activity of CLI and saline control (SAL) rats across late adolescence through early adulthood (i.e., 2-, 4-, and 6 months of age) was examined …

Family Firo Model Perspectives On Physical Spouse Abuse: An Exploratory Study., Antoinette Sgarlata Wiseman Jan 1997

Family Firo Model Perspectives On Physical Spouse Abuse: An Exploratory Study., Antoinette Sgarlata Wiseman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Control is often a central concept in the explanation and treatment of physical spouse abuse. This study examined the usefulness of W. J. Doherty's and N. Colangelo's Family FIRO Model in explaining issues of control in physically aggressive couple relationships. The model is an adaptation of W. Schutz's Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation theory, which predicts the interpersonal fit in relationships from the satisfaction of the partners' intrapersonal inclusion, control, and affection needs. In further describing these needs, Doherty and colleagues place issues related to control in separate need areas, which could affect the initial focus of treatment. Thirty couples recruited …

Involvement And Persistence: Nontraditional Student Perceptions Of The Student-College Relationship., James Leonard Butcher Jan 1997

Involvement And Persistence: Nontraditional Student Perceptions Of The Student-College Relationship., James Leonard Butcher

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study was based upon the premise that college students who perceive themselves to matter to their institutions will be more involved and inclined to persist in their educational experiences than those who perceive themselves to be marginalized. The study pursued the question of possible relationships among student perceptions of mattering, involvement and persistence with emphasis on nontraditional student issues. A questionnaire, The Mattering Scales for Adult Students in Postsecondary Education, with additional sections to measure perceptions of involvement and persistence, was administered to a sample of nontraditional and traditional students at a commuter oriented co-educational institution of 6,500 students …

Parent Perceptions Of Accreditation Standards In Early Childhood Education., Lori Elizabeth Casto Jan 1997

Parent Perceptions Of Accreditation Standards In Early Childhood Education., Lori Elizabeth Casto

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A major problem in the development of a profession in early childhood education is the lack of recognized research data relevant to practice. Parents supply an ongoing demand for the education of their children, and researchers need to determine what dimensions of quality parents find most important. The present research investigated parents' perceptions of the National Association for the Education of Young Children's (NAEYC) Accreditation Standards. Seventy-six licensed preschools and daycare centers were randomly drawn and stratified by type and size of center (NAEYC Accredited, Head Start, Large, and Small). Surveys were sent to the director of each center for …

A Comparative Study Of The Development Of Educational Psychology In China And America., Huiping Liu Cervenka Jan 1997

A Comparative Study Of The Development Of Educational Psychology In China And America., Huiping Liu Cervenka

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Some people argue that Western psychology and Asian psychology are fundamentally different and irreconcilable. Western psychology is scientific and analytic-reductionistic, while Asian psychology is concerned with man's harmony{dollar}\\...{dollar} (in Paranjpe et al, 1988, p18). This study examines and compares the scientific roots of Western psychology and the humanistic roots of Asian psychology in an attempt to determine commonality between Chinese and American educational psychology. A historical comparative method is used in this study. Two approaches, the personalistic and the naturalistic are employed to examine the development of educational psychology in China and America. Results show that Western psychology has been …

Inter-Rater Reliability, Sensitivity To Student Growth, And Concurrent Validity Of The Competent Learner Repertoire Assessment Level Two., Joseph Wesley Deem Jan 1997

Inter-Rater Reliability, Sensitivity To Student Growth, And Concurrent Validity Of The Competent Learner Repertoire Assessment Level Two., Joseph Wesley Deem

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study is to determine if two independent raters can reliably score the Competent Learner Repertoire Assessment Level 2 (CLRA), if the CLRA is sensitive to student growth over time, and to analyze if the CLRA concurs with another adaptive behavior assessment. To answer these questions the behavior of approximately 159 preschool students in a large Southern California school district will be assessed with the CLRA. The researcher proposes to evaluate inter-observer reliability by comparing scores on each CLRA item. The scores will be recorded by each of four teacher, associate teacher (paraprofessional aides) pairs across a …

Evaluation Of West Virginia Medicaid's Prior Authorization Policy For Anti-Ulcer Medications: Economic And Recipient Outcomes., Ambarish Jayant Ambegaonkar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Escalating drug costs and advent of managed care led WV Medicaid to implement the prior authorization policy for anti-ulcer medications (18% of 1994 expenditures). The study's purpose was to determine the policy's effect on utilization and expenditures of anti-ulcer medications and healthcare services such as inpatient hospitalizations, physician and outpatient hospital services (Phase I). The study also assessed the policy's effect on Medicaid recipient outcomes (Phase II). For Phase I, 36 months of Medicaid paid claims data (20 months pre-policy and 16 months post-policy) were analyzed for continuously eligible non-Medicare recipients. The policy's effects on utilization and expenditure time series …

The Relationship Between Brain Hemispheric Characteristics And Leadership Style Of School Superintendents In West Virginia., Theodora Sinicrope Farmer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study was designed to examine the relationship between the self-perceived preferred brain hemispheric processing of West Virginia public school superintendents and their self-perceived leadership styles. Respondents completed the Hermann Brain Dominance Profile, the Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire, and a demographic sheet. Data were analyzed using the General Linear Model of the Statistical Analysis System (SAS). Two hypotheses guided the study. West Virginia public school superintendents who perceive themselves as preferring predominantly left hemispheric processing will have significantly higher Initiating Structure scores than superintendents who perceive themselves as predominantly right hemispheric. West Virginia public school superintendents who perceive themselves as …

The Effects Of A Parental Life-Threatening Illness On Children's Adjustment., Christa M. Holland Jan 1997

The Effects Of A Parental Life-Threatening Illness On Children's Adjustment., Christa M. Holland

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Mental health professionals are increasingly examining psychosocial issues of individuals with medical illnesses. Research has demonstrated that when the medical patient is a parent, the entire family experiences the crisis and impact of the diagnosis and treatment. Despite these findings, few studies have examined the impact of a parental life-threatening illness on children. The psychological and behavioral adjustment of children with a parent receiving a bone marrow transplant (BMT) was compared to that of children in a matched community group. Forty child-parent dyads (20 BMT and 20 Community) completed three self-report measures at pre and post-BMT to assess children's behavior, …

Psychometric Properties Of A Weeping Propensity Scale., Phyllis M. Olson Jan 1997

Psychometric Properties Of A Weeping Propensity Scale., Phyllis M. Olson

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Weeping Propensity Scale is a 24-item questionnaire using a nine point Likert-type scale to query the intensity of a subject's weeping response to a variety of potentially crying-inducing situations. Results indicated that the measure has substantial reliability, both internal consistency (Cronbach alpha= .95) and test-retest reliability (r = .90). The study examined the stability of the factor structure of a revision of the Weeping Propensity Scale (WPS) and examined expected relationships with gender, instrumentality/expressiveness measured by the Personal Attributes Questionnaire (Spence, Helmreich, & Stapp, 1974),empathy measured by the Questionnaire Measure of Emotional Empathy (Mehrabian & Epstein, 1972), and the …

Student And Instructor Perceptions Of Effective Instructional Methods In A University Aviation Human Factors Course, Lorelie E. Miller, Jose R. Ruiz, Susan E. Sharp

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Aviation human factors instructors employed by University Aviation Association (UAA) member institutions and aviation flight students from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIUC) were asked to rank nine teaching methods according to perceived effectiveness in each of four subject areas: flight physiology, flight psychology, aeronautical decision-making (ADM), and crew resource management (CRM). Responses were compiled into two categories, students and instructors. Analysis using the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient indicated that students and instructors generally agreed on teaching methods they considered appropriate to the four subject areas.

The Truth About Secured Financing, Robert E. Scott Jan 1997

The Truth About Secured Financing, Robert E. Scott

Faculty Scholarship

The debate over the social value of secured credit (and the appropriate priority for secured claims in bankruptcy) is entering its nineteenth year. Yet the continuing publication of succeeding generations of articles exploring the topic have yielded precious little in the way of an emerging scholarly consensus about the nature and function of secured credit. Put simply, we still do not have a theory, of finance that explains why firms sometimes (but not always) issue secured debt rather than unsecured debt or equity. Moreover (and perhaps because of the lack of any plausible general theory), we lack any persuasive empirical …

The Evolution Of Adolescence: A Developmental Perspective On Juvenile Justice Reform, Elizabeth S. Scott, Thomas Grisso Jan 1997

The Evolution Of Adolescence: A Developmental Perspective On Juvenile Justice Reform, Elizabeth S. Scott, Thomas Grisso

Faculty Scholarship

The legal response to juvenile crime is undergoing revolutionary change, and its ultimate shape is uncertain. The traditional juvenile court, grounded in optimism about the potential for rehabilitation of young offenders, has long been the target of criticism, and even its defenders have been forced to acknowledge that it has failed to meet its objectives. Beginning in the late 1960s, when the Supreme Court introduced procedural regularity to delinquency proceedings in In re Gault, courts and legislatures began to slowly chip away at the foundations of the juvenile justice system. Recent developments have accelerated and intensified that process, as …

Old Chief V. United States: Stipulating Away Prosecutorial Accountability?, Daniel Richman Jan 1997

Old Chief V. United States: Stipulating Away Prosecutorial Accountability?, Daniel Richman

Faculty Scholarship

Earlier this year, in Old Chief v. United States, the Supreme Court finally resolved a circuit split on a nagging evidentiary issue: When a defendant charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm offers to satisfy one of the statute's elements by stipulating to the existence of a prior felony conviction, may the government decline the stipulation and prove the existence and the nature of that prior felony?

The question of evidence law resolved in Old Chief is not particularly earth-shattering. Indeed, while the Court divided five to four on the issue, neither Justice Souter's opinion …
