Breaking Up Is Hard To Do: The Dissolution Of Romantic Relationships, Megan Ann Sheehan Jan 1997

Breaking Up Is Hard To Do: The Dissolution Of Romantic Relationships, Megan Ann Sheehan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This investigation of the dissolution of dating relationships was based on the surveys of 78 subjects. Subjects who reported being the rejectee experienced more distress than subjects who reported being the initiators or subjects who reported mutual breakups. As the length of the relationship increased, distress over the breakup increased. One component of the study examined the transformation of romantic relationships to cross-sex friendships. Nearly half of the subjects reported that they were either friends, close friends, or best friends with their former partner. The two variables which showed a significant correlation with friendship after dating were friendship prior to …

Friedrich Sieburg, A Twentieth-Century German Francophile, Frederick Matthew Sommer Jan 1997

Friedrich Sieburg, A Twentieth-Century German Francophile, Frederick Matthew Sommer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Friedrich Sieburg achieved renown as a German literary critic in the years following World War II. His career in journalism and diplomacy prior to 1945, largely ignored in the 1950s and 1960s, has come under a new scrutiny since 1980. The connection between Sieburg's writings, many of which dealt with France, and his work with the German Foreign Office in wartime Paris has been a particular object of this scrutiny. The study Friedrich Sieburg. A Twentieth-Century German Francophile builds on the work of Joachim Fest, Margot Taureck and others, and argues that Sieburg was a romantic nationalist who became a …

It was found that those cases having CASA involvement had significantly fewer placements, tended to be more likely …

A Re-Investigation Of Hick's Law And Its Implications For Information Processing, Malcolm R Dunn Jan 1997

A Re-Investigation Of Hick's Law And Its Implications For Information Processing, Malcolm R Dunn

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The current study investigated the extent to which challenging the informational demands of the cognitive system impact reaction time in a linear, systematic fashion. Specifically, the study examined the effects of simultaneously challenging all three stages of the information processing. A 3 (Response Selection) x 2 (Stimulus Identification) x 2 (Response Programming) ANOVA with repeated measures was used to analyze mean reaction time data. The results indicated that, to a point, information processing increases in a linear, systematic fashion. However, when the system is substantially stressed, speed of processing is negatively impacted. This results in an over-additive increase in reaction …

When Playing God: Concerning Artificial Reproduction, Christina Ann Brandom Sessa Jan 1997

When Playing God: Concerning Artificial Reproduction, Christina Ann Brandom Sessa

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis is a discussion about new reproductive technologies and the ethical implications of those technologies. Until now, fetal personhood was the focus of pro-choice and pro-life groups battling about abortion versus women's rights. However, new reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization and cryopreservation further complicate the foundation upon which traditional abortion arguments are based. The focus of the argument should be shifted from fetal personhood to a more comprehensive argument for the respect of the sanctity of human life. This shift would force society to address the more crucial issues which have led us to abortion and new …

Examining Student Perceptions Of The Transitional Services School Counselors Provide To College-Bound Individuals With And Without Learning Disabilities In The Areas Of Self-Awareness, Self-Advocacy, And The Law, Gillian Elisa Wells

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

College-bound students with and without learning disabilities were surveyed, to examine their perceptions of the transitional services provided by school counselors in the areas of self-awareness, self-advocacy, and the law. It appears that both groups are receiving some transitional services. Self-Awareness, self-advocacy, and the law are three components that are not covered by school counselors who work with students. In a majority of cases students cite family and other professionals as the only assistance they receive in these areas.
