The Economics Of Investing : Risk-Aversion And Retirement Decisions, Justine Isbaner Jan 1997

The Economics Of Investing : Risk-Aversion And Retirement Decisions, Justine Isbaner

Honors Capstones

This thesis is a study of the impact that risk-aversion has on individual retirement investment decisions. The first portion of the work details the decline in Social Security and pensions plan payments over recent years. This finding adds to the urgency for the employee to focus on personal savings to meet retirement goals. Aggregate personal savings have been dropping since 1980, and individuals are making the situation worse by saving in low return bank accounts. Discovering the sources of risk and risk-aversion allow the investor to establish plans to reduce risk in their investments. By controlling for risk factors, the …

Pain Relief For The Dying: The Unwelcome Intervention Of The Criminal Law, Phebe Saunders Haugen Jan 1997

Pain Relief For The Dying: The Unwelcome Intervention Of The Criminal Law, Phebe Saunders Haugen

Faculty Scholarship

This Article addresses physician-assisted suicide and the medical treatment of pain and suffering. Part II discusses various medical misconceptions about the treatment of pain and how modern medicine fails to fulfill this aspect of its palliative care role. Part III reviews how the law currently circumscribes the patient and doctor's ability to make medical decisions when the patient is terminally ill. As will be shown, the law is clearer and more respectful of good medical practice than most medical practitioners currently believe. Moreover, this section will also establish that, while several competing philosophical positions surrounding physician-assisted suicide exist, these same …

Domestic Violence, Character, And Social Change In The Welfare Reform Debate, Joan S. Meier Jan 1997

Domestic Violence, Character, And Social Change In The Welfare Reform Debate, Joan S. Meier

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This article addresses the recently discovered connection between domestic violence and welfare “dependency.” Empirical research among welfare populations shows that over 50% of women receiving welfare are or have recently been battered, and that partner abuse is a major reason for the continuing poverty of many women.

The question the author asks and begins to answer is why this connection has not previously been identified or publicized by either the battered women’s movement or the anti-poverty movement, and what the challenge may be to both movements as they attempt to address it in the context of welfare reform. The author …

Gender Differences In Science, David Harbaugh Jan 1997

Gender Differences In Science, David Harbaugh

Graduate Research Papers

This literature review examines the research that was available about the trends and the status of gender differences in science. The major factors identified by researchers and educators that contribute to this gender difference are discussed. Suggestions are presented which may minimize the gender differences and provide specific practices that can help improve the situation. The results of this review indicate that although a difference exists, there are ways that educators, parents, and students can make changes to decrease the difference.

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Kathleen F. Hartzler Jan 1997

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Kathleen F. Hartzler

Graduate Research Papers

As a future principal, there are four areas that I feel I will be doing the most work. Those four areas are: parental involvement, community involvement, leadership style and technology. The bottom line in all of this is student learning. We always ask, whether a teacher or administrator, what is best for children? I will reflect on leadership style, parent involvement, community involvement and technology all as part of improving our school system to achieve the best education our students can get.

Creating And Measuring Media Literacy : A Case Study, Darin M. Johnson Jan 1997

Creating And Measuring Media Literacy : A Case Study, Darin M. Johnson

Graduate Research Papers

Seven years later, I stood before high school students in Ames, Iowa, with the proposition that we study media as a collection of cultural artifacts. Behind many of our discussions was the assumption that media convey values and that these values influence our personal values. What was missing from my instruction was an organizational structure that would help students see the necessary patterns, methods and stereotypes in order to better comprehend the values in these messages.

After a summer of contemplation, I decided thematic instruction would most naturally allow us to examine important media while capstoning themes from the required …

Writing A Defensible Personal Education Plan : Rationale And Design, Mary Kay Desenberg Johnson Jan 1997

Writing A Defensible Personal Education Plan : Rationale And Design, Mary Kay Desenberg Johnson

Graduate Research Papers

Iowa requires documentation of qualitatively differentiated curriculum for identified talented and gifted students by schools using allowable growth funding. In response to this directive, a local special education Individual Education Plan (IEP) documentation format was modified to a Personal Education Plan (PEP) format for gifted learners.

Construction and refinement of the format continued over a seven year period. The use of the familiar IEP process seemed to afford credibility and was readily accepted by staff, parents, and administration. The PEP format held the program for gifted and talented to a high standard of accountability, and a six step model evolved …

Talented And Gifted Programs In The Middle School : Critical Components, Patricia R. Kayser Jan 1997

Talented And Gifted Programs In The Middle School : Critical Components, Patricia R. Kayser

Graduate Research Papers

As middle school educators and teachers of the gifted and talented continue to debate issues such as equity vs. excellence, homogeneous vs. heterogeneous grouping, and cognitive vs. affective education, the needs of gifted and talented middle school students in the general education classroom appear to be ignored. This paper reviewed current literature relating to the needs of gifted and talented pre-adolescents in the middle school setting in order to determine what were the critical components necessary for meeting their unique needs in the general education classroom. From the reviewed literature, critical components identified include content differentiation, teaching strategies, grouping for …

The World Of Work : An Intermediate Level Curriculum Model Integrating School-To-Work And Service Learning, Virginia Lavelle

Graduate Research Papers

Workers will need new and different skills for the changing economy in the 21st century. Current legislation includes school improvement and school-to-work. This project was designed to incorporate the educational reform movements of school-to-work and service learning within the school year calendar to provide educational work-related experiences for a full range of intermediate level learners in an inclusive classroom. Within this model students practice developing and applying basic skills, thinking skills, and personal qualities (SCANS) through work-based experiences which bring together school-to-work and service learning.

The Home-School Partnership, Sue W. Mcdonald Jan 1997

The Home-School Partnership, Sue W. Mcdonald

Graduate Research Papers

This school-home literacy project reaffirms the notion that the school and home working together greatly benefits children. The parents in the project believed the partnership encouraged them to make time each day to be involved in their child's literacy experiences. From this consistent scheduling of experiences, the parents were able to observe the benefits of the partnership as their children grew in reading and writing abilities. Parents also commented on the difficulty of locating books that were appropriate for their children's reading level. A bibliography of predictable stories should be provided to the parents.

Working On The "Mommy-Track": Motherhood And Women Lawyers, Rebecca Korzec Jan 1997

Working On The "Mommy-Track": Motherhood And Women Lawyers, Rebecca Korzec

All Faculty Scholarship

This Article examines the effects of motherhood on the careers of women lawyers and the efficacy of the 'mommy-track' as a means of ameliorating these effects. Part I examines the current position of women in the legal profession. Part II examines the nature of 'motherhood' and the risk/benefit function of 'mommy-tracking.' Part III analyzes the 'mommy-track' from the perspective of feminist jurisprudence. Finally, Part IV examines issues related to workplace transformation. It is the position of this paper that 'mommy-tracking' reinforces undesirable stereotypes. Ironically, this apparent 'solution' actually forestalls the transformations, at home and at work, which could enable women …
