Beyond Burritos And Lumpia: Ethnic Identity As A Difference In Preservice Teacher Education, Sara Soledad Garcia, E. Litton Jan 1997

Beyond Burritos And Lumpia: Ethnic Identity As A Difference In Preservice Teacher Education, Sara Soledad Garcia, E. Litton

Teacher Education

Teachers play a pivotal role in society. On a daily basis they influence the futures of the children they encounter. Not only do they teach children how to read and write butteachers are also charged with the task of creating responsible citizens who should think critically about society. Teacher educators, and specifically those individuals charged with the task of preparing preservice teachers, have responsibilities similar to teachers in the field. Education, on any level, ought to be a transformative process.

Thus, the preparation of teachers as instruments of social change ought to be a central focus in preservice teacher education …

Self Narrative And The Process Of Inquiry In Teacher Development: Living And Working In Just Institutions, Sara Soledad Garcia Jan 1997

Self Narrative And The Process Of Inquiry In Teacher Development: Living And Working In Just Institutions, Sara Soledad Garcia

Teacher Education

Historically the cultures of certain ethnic groups in the United States have been rendered invisible in school pedagogy. New stipulations for credentialing in California, however, require teachers to reflect critically upon the meaning of cultural difference, including their own thinking and lived experience as well as the lives, backgrounds, and cultural history ofthe children they teach. To be effective in culturally diverse classrooms, teachers must confront certain contradictions in their own identity. Most teacher candidates have shaped their identity according to a set of mainstream values and beliefs that has denigrated cultural difference. The personal confrontation with difference and self-identity …

Mixed Questions And The Scope Of Federal Habeas Review: Consideration Of Miranda Claims In Thompson V. Keohane, Rachel Meyers Jan 1997

Mixed Questions And The Scope Of Federal Habeas Review: Consideration Of Miranda Claims In Thompson V. Keohane, Rachel Meyers

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Federal habeas corpus review has a long historical tradition, at common law and in the United States. Over time, federal habeas review has expanded to its modern dimensions, which permit lower federal courts to overturn decisions of the states' highest courts. When federal courts review claims raised by state prisoners, the mandate to protect individual constitutional rights competes with other fundamental constitutional values: the promotion of federalism, in the form of respect for state court judgments, finality and fairness.

This Comment analyzes a federal habeas claim of a Miranda violation, a claim which has traditionally been deemed a "mixed question" …

The Supreme Court And Terminal Sedation: Rejecting Assisted Suicide, Embracing Euthanasia, David Orentlicher Jan 1997

The Supreme Court And Terminal Sedation: Rejecting Assisted Suicide, Embracing Euthanasia, David Orentlicher

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

In its physician-assisted suicide cases, the United States Supreme Court ostensibly affimned the distinction between "passive" and "active!' steps to end a patient's life. The Court reiterated its recognition of a right to refuse life-sustaining treatment but rejected a right to physician-assisted suicide. However, Professor Orentlicher argues that, in responding to concerns about unrelieved suffering in some dying patients, the Court compromised the very distinction it was trying to preserve. The Court indicated that suffering patients can turn to "terminal sedation," a practice which often is effectively a "slow euthanasia." The Court not only blurred the distinction between active and …

The Effect Of Disturbance On The Reproduction And Management Of Captive Cranes, Claire M. Mirande, James W. Carpenter, Ann M. Burke Jan 1997

The Effect Of Disturbance On The Reproduction And Management Of Captive Cranes, Claire M. Mirande, James W. Carpenter, Ann M. Burke

Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop

A retrospective analysis of egg laying histories and observations of crane pairs at the International Crane Foundation and the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center indicates that disturbance associated with captivity has adverse impacts on captive breeding. Females on public display laid significantly fewer eggs than those off display (P < 0.05). Crane pairs moved to other pens (other than adjacent pens) or hetween facilities laid slightly fewer eggs than those birds which were not moved. although the results were not statistically significant (P = 0.188). Pen design and construction also appeared to have adverse impacts on breeding. In addition, human activities, intraspecific interactions, and rearing methods influence a bird's response to disturbance, and, therefore, these factors must also be considered in an effective crane management program. Modifying procedures to minimize disturbance, timing necessary disturbances after the breeding and molt seasons, and carefully monitoring birds for signs of stress can result in increased reproductive potential for captive, endangered cranes.

Community Needs To Remove Rose-Tinted Glasses To Examine Ethnicity, Create Environments For Success, Scharron Clayton Jan 1997

Community Needs To Remove Rose-Tinted Glasses To Examine Ethnicity, Create Environments For Success, Scharron Clayton

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

The purpose of this paper is to briefly explore the topic of ethnicity as it relates to successful living within a community. In light of the work of historians such as Schlesinger 1993), and contemporary pieces by Desouza (1995), and Herrnstein and Murray (1994), this is timely. I can recall a conversation with a local CEO who was convinced that the "American Identity" was being threatened by any focus on ethnicity and difference. His fear of the changing fabric of society, forced him to embrace a position which would cling to the past systems of domination by promoting a "we're …

Classicism And Christianity In Hélisenne De Crenne's Les Angoysses Doulouoreuses Qui Procedent D'Amours, Megan Conway Jan 1997

Classicism And Christianity In Hélisenne De Crenne's Les Angoysses Doulouoreuses Qui Procedent D'Amours, Megan Conway

Quidditas

Although Renaissance philosophers and theologians like Marsilio Ficino strove mightily to show Plato and Plotinus compatible with Saint Paul, writers of popular prose and poetry suffered no such qualms. While it appears curious and often shocking to modern readers to find reference to the apostles and Apollo in successive paragraphs, many Renaissance writer followed Dante's example in The Divine Comedy and saw nothing incongruous in embracing classical mythology while espousing Christian doctrine. A fascinating example of this combination of traditions is the popular French work of a female author of the early Renaissance—Hélisenne de Crenne's Les Angoysses douloureuses qui procedent …

Repressed Memories Of Repeated Sexual Abuse: From Real Incest To The Emergence Of False Memories, Alice M. Donovan Jan 1997

Repressed Memories Of Repeated Sexual Abuse: From Real Incest To The Emergence Of False Memories, Alice M. Donovan

Master of Liberal Studies Theses

Incest and childhood sexual abuse have been and continue to be a problem in our society. However, Today a relatively new phenomena involving repressed memories of childhood sexual abuse plagues our society. Women, and some men, between the ages of 25 to 40 who have sought therapy for relatively common problems such as marital difficulties, work related problems, eating disorders or simple depression: without ever having any memories of being sexually abused as a child, have come to believe while in therapy that they were the victims of repeated childhood sexual abuse. Thousands of people are remembering such abuse, and …

An Idiographic Approach To The Person X Environment Interaction In Support Judgments /, Catherine J. Lutz Jan 1997

An Idiographic Approach To The Person X Environment Interaction In Support Judgments /, Catherine J. Lutz

Wayne State University Dissertations

Earliest models of perceived social support emphasized aspects of the individual's social environment, proposing that perceived support is a direct function of the help one actually received. Other researchers speculated that perceived social support is a reflection of the personality of the perceiver. However, a recent series of generalizability studies suggest that the single most important determinant of support judgments is the Perceiver by Environment interaction. Thus, it appears that social support judgments are largely driven by the unique matching between the perceiver and the support provider. One potential mechanism of this matching process is that different people base their …

Is Tobacco A Drug? - Administrative Agencies As Common Law Courts Regulations, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 1997

Is Tobacco A Drug? - Administrative Agencies As Common Law Courts Regulations, Cass R. Sunstein

Articles

Professor Cass Sunstein argues that the FDA has the authority to regulate tobacco products. He considers the text of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, which supports the FDA assertion, and the context of its enactment, which argues against the FDA. He resolves the tension between text and context in favor of FDA jurisdiction by turning to the emerging role of administrative agencies. In modem government, he contends, administrative agencies have become America's common law courts, with the power to adapt statutory regimes to new facts and new values when the underlying statute is ambiguous. Professor Sunstein's Article, like …

Rationale For Using Group Therapy With Couples Affected By Domestic Violence, Joyce C. Fehr

Graduate Research Papers

This paper defines battering and batterers, highlights some of the treatment interventions already in place for batterers, and provides a rationale for using couples group therapy for those people who choose to remain in a relationship after there has been at least one incidence of domestic violence resulting in the arrest of one of the partners. The paper describes what this type of group format might look like, and takes a look at the criticisms of couples group therapy and the cautions associated with such a group. Finally, this paper summarizes the future direction of domestic violence treatment.

Crossing Boundaries: Land And Sea In Jane Austen's 'Persuasion', Laura Vorachek Jan 1997

Crossing Boundaries: Land And Sea In Jane Austen's 'Persuasion', Laura Vorachek

English Faculty Publications

Jane Austen suggests in Persuasion the pressures that the increased mobility of the middle class placed on the established aristocratic society in her time. Anne Elliot especially brings to light the inherited assumptions of her society. She can marry within her social rank (Mr. Elliot or Charles Musgrove) or marry below her (Wentworth at age 23), but either is a choice within the limits established by her society. One owns land or one does not. But when Wentworth returns a man of name and wealth, he is not a member of the landed gentry nor is he below Anne in …
