Book Review: Flowering Of The Cumberland , And: Ransom Street Quartet: Poems And Stories , And: Johnny's Cosmology, Bill Jolliff

Faculty Publications - Department of English

The University of Nebraska Press has given us a gift by republishing Harriette Simpson Arnow's Flowering ofthe Cumberland. Though much has changed in the fields of history writing and literary non-fiction in the intervening decades, rereading Arnow reminds us that good prose is always in style and that good stories never die.

Juanita Brown Tobin's Ransom Street Quartet is a half-successful book of poems. And since the other half is less a failure than a curiosity, the whole is worth reading. Fortunately the book leads with its strength.

In Johnny's Cosmology, North Carolina poet John York presents his own engaging …

The work should show problem-solving skills and demonstrate new conceptual outcomes.

Usable Pasts, Tad Tuleja

All USU Press Publications

In Usable Pasts, fourteen authors examine the manipulation of traditional expressions among a variety of groups from the United States and Canada: the development of a pictorial style by Navajo weavers in response to traders, Mexican American responses to the appropriation of traditional foods by Anglos, the expressive forms of communication that engender and sustain a sense of community in an African American women's social club and among elderly Yiddish folksingers in Miami Beach, the incorporation of mass media images into the "C&Ts" (customs and traditions) of a Boy Scout troop, the changing meaning of their defining Exodus-like migration to …

Mystery Shopping As A Service Quality Improvement Tool: Developing A Comprehensive Program For An Economy Motel Chain, Robyn L. Schultz Jan 1997

Mystery Shopping As A Service Quality Improvement Tool: Developing A Comprehensive Program For An Economy Motel Chain, Robyn L. Schultz

Theses

Organizations in all industries have discovered the importance of understanding customer needs and meeting or exceeding those needs through superior customer service. The hospitality industry, as the predominant service industry, has a particular responsibility to maintain high levels of customer satisfaction. An evaluation tool which all allows organizations to see their performance from the customer's perspective is mystery shopping. This project explores the systematic development and implementation of a mystery shopping program which is based on operational objectives and points to training needs in an economy motel group. While almost always a useful evaluation tool, the power of mystery shopping, …

A Naturalistic Inquiry Into The Experience Of Job Loss, Kathryn Desai Jan 1997

A Naturalistic Inquiry Into The Experience Of Job Loss, Kathryn Desai

Theses

This research paper is the result of a "naturalistic inquiry" to explore job loss, as experienced by displaced senior managers of the Long Term Care System in Ontario, in 1997. The purpose of the study is to describe the experiences of a group of downsized Home Care and Placement Coordination managers, who lost their jobs in the transition to Community Care Access Centres. The methodology included the use of focus groups and in-depth interviews (which were tape recorded), to collect the data from a sample of volunteers across the province. This qualitative study validated other research, which has demonstrated that …

Declaration Of Independence: Mary Colum As Autobiographer, Sanford Sternlicht

The Courier

I N 1947, ten years before her death at the age of 7I, Mary Catherine Gunning Maguire Colum-Molly to her friends and her husband, the poet-dramatist Padraic Colum-published one ofthe most forthright and powerful protofeminist autobiographies ofthe twentieth century: Life and the Dream, a book that should not be as neglected as it is. What was or is the dream? It was a dream ofmany episodes: the hope ofa free, prosperous, peaceful, united Ireland; the fulfillment ofthe Irish Literary Revival which she so brilliantly chronicles as a participant-witness in the autobiography, and before in her masterwork of literary criticism: From …

The Punctator's World: A Discursion, Part X, Gwen G. Robinson

The Courier

TEXTBOOKS for budding journalists are recommending short sentences of fifteen to twenty words and vertical lists for 'a clear layout' of difficult materials. They instruct that to be successful, authors need not embellish every sentence with a verb, nor, in fact, worry very much about 'grammar'. Language should be pitched to suit the sophistication levels of the reading masses, of whom there are an estimated seventy-seven million incompetents lurking in the U.K. and the U.S. alone. Such are the guiding directives for practising writers, and by extension, for editors, publishers, and book sellers, all of whom are scrambling to accommodate …

Beliefs And Behaviors Among Caps Members Regarding Ethical Issues, Mark R. Mcminn, Katheryn Rhoads Meek, Barrett W. Mcray Jan 1997

Beliefs And Behaviors Among Caps Members Regarding Ethical Issues, Mark R. Mcminn, Katheryn Rhoads Meek, Barrett W. Mcray

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

A survey was conducted of the ethical beliefs and behaviors of 498 Christian counselors, using the same 88-item instrument used in previous surveys of psychologists (Pope, Tabachnick, & Keith-Spiegel, 1987) and counselors (Gibson & Pope, 1993). Seventy-seven of the respondents were members of the Christian Association for Psychological Studies (CAPS). Generally, CAPS members appear to have high regard for and high compliance with prevailing professional ethical standards. Response patterns from the overall sample were simplified with factor analyses, resulting in two scales of ethical beliefs and four scales of ethical behaviors. Scale scores were used to compare CAPS members with …

Why Did Plato Write Socratic Dialogues?, William J. Prior Jan 1997

Why Did Plato Write Socratic Dialogues?, William J. Prior

Philosophy

The reader will discern in the title of this paper a reference to a classic article by Charles Kahn.1 In this article and in a number that have followed,2 Kahn has criticized the dominant contemporary interpretation of Plato's early dialogues and suggested an alternative of his own. I do not think Kahn's positive views are correct;3 however, I think he succeeds completely in showing what is wrong with the standard interpretation of the early dialogues. He does not show, in other words, what Plato's motives were for writing his early dialogues; but he certainly shows what were …

Rule-Governed Allomorphy Can Be Suppletive Also, David Tuggy Jan 1997

Rule-Governed Allomorphy Can Be Suppletive Also, David Tuggy

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

Commonly occurring linguistic forms, including allomorphs, tend to be learned (listed in speakers' mental lexicons) even if they are formed according to the pattern of a linguistic rule. They thus have dual motivation: the motivation given by the rule, and the suppletive motivation of their having been learned. This accounts for the otherwise inexplicable persistence of rule-governed allomorphy when the conditioning environment is destroyed through diachronic change, producing apparent positive exceptions to the rule.
