The Effects Of Parental Occupation On Role-Playing In Children, Michele L. Warner May 1997

The Effects Of Parental Occupation On Role-Playing In Children, Michele L. Warner

Honors Theses

This study examined the relationship between the mother's occupational status and the type of play behaviors children engage in. There were 50 children (25 same-sex pairs) examined for this study. They were 5 years of age. The children were timed according to how much time they spent with "girl toys" along with the time they spent mutually interacting with one another. The findings suggest that there are gender differences in toy preferences. However, there are not significant differences between children who have stay-at-home moms and those whose moms work outside the home.

African-American Identity, The Quality Of School Life And Academic Achievement, Michael James Mcintire May 1997

African-American Identity, The Quality Of School Life And Academic Achievement, Michael James Mcintire

Theses and Dissertations

Although some studies have linked educational outcomes to identity status (Francis 1981; Hummel & Roselli 1983), only Taylor, Lasten, Flickinger, Roberts and Fulmore, L.D. (1994) have attempted to link educational outcomes to the racial identity status of minority group members. Given the theorized importance of adequate racial identity development for the future psychological health of minority group members, and the impact of educational achievement in high school on subsequent educational, economic, and social outcomes, the present study is designed to assess the quality of school life and the racial identity of African-American high school students, and to determine the extent …

Spinning A Tighter Web: The First Amendment And Internet Regulation, Angela E. Wu May 1997

Spinning A Tighter Web: The First Amendment And Internet Regulation, Angela E. Wu

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This article examines the First Amendment issues associated with Internet regulation, specifically the Communications Decency Act of 1996 and discusses the district court opinion in ACLU v. Reno. The author considers existing legislation in the telecommunications industry and the effect of such legislation on First Amendment rights. In additions, the author contends that the Internet is a revolutionary medium that should remain free of government intrusion. Therefore, due to the impossibility of regulating the Internet and the value that society places on the free exchange of ideas, the CDA should not be upheld by the United States Supreme Court.

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Communication Competence And Interactive Strategies For Coping With Romantic Jealousy, Amy J. Bull May 1997

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Communication Competence And Interactive Strategies For Coping With Romantic Jealousy, Amy J. Bull

Student Work

This thesis investigated the relationship between communication competence and interactive jealousy coping strategies. Two hypotheses were proposed and tested utilizing the Interactive Reactions to Jealousy Scale and a subscale of Wiemann’s Communication Competence Scale. Results indicated a significant positive relationship exists between the level of communication competence and the use of integrative communication, which is considered a positive and helpful coping strategy. However, no significant relationships were found between the level of communication competence and the use of potentially destructive coping strategies. Discussion and interpretation of results and general future areas for research on jealousy and communication competence are proposed.

Between Expectations And Hesitations: Romanian-American Relations, 1938-1940, Emma Porfireanu May 1997

Between Expectations And Hesitations: Romanian-American Relations, 1938-1940, Emma Porfireanu

Student Work

Romanian-American relations between 1938 and 1940 evolved at an oscillating path and developed asymmetrically according to the pattern o f a big power-small power relationship. This period presents particularly interesting features due to international trends and the evolution of Romanian internal situation. The United States did not consider the East Central European region (where Romania was situated) to have a specific importance for its national interest. Therefore, the foreign policy decision-makers of the State Department did not designed a strategy toward East Central Europe in the interwar period. Moreover, this region had little to offer to the United States strategically, …

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Bayley Mental Psychomotor Developmental Indices Scores of 61 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Graduates were examined to investigate whether a predicted early developmental lag would occur followed by an increase or "catch-up" over time. Results indicated that no significant changes occurred over time; however, mental (Bayley MDI) scores were lower than motor (Bayley PDI) scores particularly at the 4- and 22-month test age. Gross motor, fine motor, social, cognitive, and language development was also investigated to see whether expected differences among these domains occurred over time. Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations

Depression afflicts 20% to 40% of people 65 and older. Depression in older adults is frequent and chronic. The challenge of a hospital stay and the knowledge of having a long term disability may increase the risk for a depressive episode. In today's health care environment older adults are being released from hospitals after a short length of stay and are frequently dependent on home health services for assistance with activities of daily living. Home health care aides are given the responsibility of providing these services to the older adult in the home environment and need to be aware of …
