Limit On The Two-Photon Production Of The Glueball Candidate FJ(2220) At The Cornell Electron Storage Ring, R. Godang, Kenneth A. Bloom, Cleo Collaboration Nov 1997

Limit On The Two-Photon Production Of The Glueball Candidate FJ(2220) At The Cornell Electron Storage Ring, R. Godang, Kenneth A. Bloom, Cleo Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We use the CLEO detector at the Cornell e+e- storage ring, CESR, to search for the two-photon production of the glueball candidate fJ (2220) in its decay to KsKs. We present a restrictive upper limit on the product of the two-photon partial width and the KsKs branching fraction, (Γγγ BKsKs)fJ(2220). We use this limit to calculate a lower limit on the stickiness, which is a measure of the two-gluon coupling relative to the two-photon coupling. This limit on stickiness …

Study Of The Decay Τ-→2Π-Π+3Π0ΝΤ, S. Anderson, Kenneth A. Bloom, Cleo Collaboration Nov 1997

Study Of The Decay Τ-→2Π-Π+3Π0ΝΤ, S. Anderson, Kenneth A. Bloom, Cleo Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

The decay τ-→2π-π+3π0ντ has been studied with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. The branching fraction is measured to be (2.85 ± 0.56 ± 0.51) X 10-4. The result is in good agreement with the isospin expectation but somewhat below the conserved-vectorcurrent prediction. We have searched for resonance substructure in the decay. Within the statistical precision, the decay is saturated by the channels τ-→π-2π0ωντ, 2π-π+ωντ, and π-2π0ων …

Sources Of Variability In The Column Photosynthetic Cross Section For Antarctic Coastal Waters, Mark A. Moline, Herve Claustre, Barbara B. Prezelin Nov 1997

Sources Of Variability In The Column Photosynthetic Cross Section For Antarctic Coastal Waters, Mark A. Moline, Herve Claustre, Barbara B. Prezelin

Biological Sciences

Using a highly resolved Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) database collected near Palmer Station, Antarctica, from 1991 to 1994, the variability in the column photosynthetic cross section (ψ*, m2 g Chl a -1) was analyzed. The relationship between the daily integrated primary production rates versus the product of surface irradiance (QPAR(0*)) and the integrated chlorophyll content (down to 0.1% QPAR(0*)) gave a ψ* value of 0.0695 m 2 g Chl a-1 (r2 = 0.85, p 2 g Chl a-1) with extreme values extending over a fiftyfold range (0.009-0.488 m 2 …

Unified Behavior Of Alkali Core-Level Binding-Energy Shifts Induced By Sp Metals, E. Lundgren, R. Nyholm, M. Qvarford, J. N. Andersen, David R. Heskett, S. V. Christensen Nov 1997

Unified Behavior Of Alkali Core-Level Binding-Energy Shifts Induced By Sp Metals, E. Lundgren, R. Nyholm, M. Qvarford, J. N. Andersen, David R. Heskett, S. V. Christensen

Physics Faculty Publications

Thin overlayers of Na, K, Rb, and Cs on different sp-metal substrates have been investigated using photoelectron spectroscopy. The alkali core levels show clearly resolved binding-energy shifts between the surface layer, the intermediate layer(s), and the interface layer. The magnitude of these shifts depends on sp metal and on alkali metal. The layer-resolved core-level binding-energy shifts are well reproduced by models based on a thermodynamical description. For three-layer alkali films the core-level binding energy of the intermediate layer is found to exhibit a small but significant shift between different sp-metal substrates. A simple relationship between the core-level binding-energy …

Infrared Optical Properties Of Mixed-Phase Thin Films Studied By Spectroscopic Ellipsometry Using Boron Nitride As An Example, Mathias Schubert, B. Rheinlander, E. Franke, H. Neumann, T. E. Tiwald, John A. Woollam Nov 1997

Infrared Optical Properties Of Mixed-Phase Thin Films Studied By Spectroscopic Ellipsometry Using Boron Nitride As An Example, Mathias Schubert, B. Rheinlander, E. Franke, H. Neumann, T. E. Tiwald, John A. Woollam

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

We present a microstructure-dependent anisotropic infrared-optical dielectric function model for mixed-phase polycrystalline material from which we derive the transverse and longitudinal-optical modes observable in thin films. Infrared ellipsometry over the wavelength range from 700 to 3000 cm-1 is then used to determine the phase and microstructure of polycrystalline and multilayered hexagonal and cubic boron nitride thin films deposited by magnetron sputtering onto (100) silicon. The ellipsometric data depend on the thin-film multilayer structure, the layer-phase composition, and the average orientation of the hexagonal grain c axes. In particular, we demonstrate the existence of spectral shifts of longitudinal optical phonons …

Upper Limits To The Outflow Of Ions At Mars: Implications For Atmospheric Evolution, Jane L. Fox Nov 1997

Upper Limits To The Outflow Of Ions At Mars: Implications For Atmospheric Evolution, Jane L. Fox

Physics Faculty Publications

Escape of ions is potentially important for the evolution of volatiles on Mars, but the mechanisms and rates of ion escape processes are not fully understood. Instruments on the Russian Phobos 2 orbiter have, however, measured fluxes of heavy ions apparently of ionospheric origin in the optical shadow of Mars. These ions are assumed to arise from escape processes induced by the interaction of the solar wind with the ionosphere. We determine here upper limits to the ion loss rates by imposing upward flux boundary conditions on models of the low and high solar activity Mars ionosphere. The maximum fluxes …
