Structural Equation Modeling Of Attitudes Toward Employment Testing, Laura Susan Hamil
Structural Equation Modeling Of Attitudes Toward Employment Testing, Laura Susan Hamil
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
This research investigated the relationships among past testing experiences, testing attitudes, perceptions of test performance, race, and gender. In addition, the effects of testing information on testing attitudes were studied. Two hundred and twelve applicants to a variety of positions in a large telecommunications company were asked to complete a series of questionnaires before and after employment testing. The questionnaires included measures of testing experience, general and specific testing attitudes, and perceptions of test performance. Scores on the employment test were also obtained as a measure of cognitive ability. Of the 212 participants, half were given a brochure to read …

The Effects Of A Maternal Childhood Lead-Poisoning Education Program On Knowledge, Health Beliefs, And Compliance, Sylvia Elaine Johnson
Health Services Research Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of two educational intervention methods on participant's knowledge, health beliefs and prevention behavior as they relate to childhood lead poisoning. The two educational methods being used in the study are personal instruction by the investigator and a 12-minute video developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics on childhood lead poisoning. Information contained in both educational tools is identical. In particular, this study seeks to determine if one educational intervention was more effective than the other. The final purpose of the study is to test the Health Belief Model by examining …

Carrion Seeking In Brown Tree Snakes: Importance Of Olfactory And Visual Cues, John A. Shivik, Larry Clark
Carrion Seeking In Brown Tree Snakes: Importance Of Olfactory And Visual Cues, John A. Shivik, Larry Clark
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
We performed field experiments to examine brown tree snake (Boiga irregularis) attraction to carrion. These snakes were attracted to carrion and entered traps baited with dead mice as readily as traps baited with live mice. Using the cues arising from both live and dead prey, we examined the relative importance of visual and chemical cues to brown tree snakes. With carrion lures, chemical cues alone were sufficient for attracting and capturing snakes, but with live prey lures visual cues were required to attract and capture brown tree snakes. Our study presents the first experimental field evidence showing carrion …

Childhood Health And Nutrition: An Exploration Of Enamel Hypoplasia Studies Using The Milwaukee County Institutional Grounds Cemetery, 1882-1925, Maura K. Polli
Masters Theses
The focus of this study is the dentition of a Midwestern United States historic almshouse population, the Milwaukee County Institutional Grounds cemetery (MCIG), 1882-1925. A survey of linear enamel hypoplasia (LEH) in the anterior dentition of a subsample of this population has been conducted to demonstrate incidences of childhood stress. LEH is symptomatic of extended periods of disease or nutritional stress experienced during the formative years of tooth development.
A subsample of 140 individuals was examined for LEH. The labial surface of the anterior dentition was examined for the frequency and chronological distribution of LEH. The frequency of LEH ranges …
Regulating Patent Holders: Local Working Requirements And Compulsory Licences At International Law, Michael Halewood
Regulating Patent Holders: Local Working Requirements And Compulsory Licences At International Law, Michael Halewood
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
For decades, industry lobbyists and governments have been mounting pressure on other countries to offer stronger protection for foreign owned intellectual property. This paper seeks to sow dissent among those who feel that the NAFTA and TRIPS agreements represent the triumph of strong intellectual property rights over domestic policy-making alternatives. Focusing on patent law, in particular, this article argues that there are a wide range of policy options open to patent granting countries which both circumscribe patent holder's rights and comply with TRIPS and NAFTA. More specifically, the author argues that TRIPS and NAFTA signatories continue to enjoy relatively broad …
Kanpo Consumption Among Japanese Students At Western Michigan University: Case Studies In Medical Pluralism, Joseph Paul Siuda
Kanpo Consumption Among Japanese Students At Western Michigan University: Case Studies In Medical Pluralism, Joseph Paul Siuda
Masters Theses
Many societies have pluralistic medical systems in which biomedicine and alternative therapies coexist. Some anthropologists view medical pluralism adaptively, where the strengths of various therapies complement each other. Others highlight the hegemonic power of biomedicine and its tendency to suppress or co-opt alternative therapies. To understand medical pluralism, one must examine alternative therapies in particular cultural contexts.
Kanpo, or Japanese herbalism, has survived political and legal suppression resulting from Japan's 19th century attempts at westernization and now poses a challenge to the biomedical model of health and illness. Since the 1970's more Japanese are turning to kanpo rather than …
Aboriginal Autonomy: The Future Of Indigenous Development In Western Australia, Matthew B. Eugster
Aboriginal Autonomy: The Future Of Indigenous Development In Western Australia, Matthew B. Eugster
Masters Theses
The prospects for development within the Aboriginal society of Western Australia were the focus of this study. The Primary intent of the study was to examine the causes behind an apparent lack of development within Aboriginal society. Next, the study examined possible remedies for the situation.
The study determined that the lack of development in Aboriginal society can be attributed primarily to social dysfunction ( or social dislocation). Furthermore, social dislocation could be attributed to cultural deprivation or the inability to practice one's culture. It was proposed and established that cultural and political autonomy would provide an environment more suitable …

The Relationship Of Training Methods Between Ncaa Division I Cross-Country Runners With 10,000 Meter Performance, Maximilian J. Kurz
The Relationship Of Training Methods Between Ncaa Division I Cross-Country Runners With 10,000 Meter Performance, Maximilian J. Kurz
Student Work
The scientific relationship between 10,000 meter performance and training methods of distance runners remains incompletely understood. Researchers such as Slovic (1977) and Pollock (1978) have attempted to study the relationship between training practices of distance runners with the use of surveys. However, these studies did not analyze the significance of various types of training regimens available. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the training methods of NCAA Division I runners and 10,000 meter performance. Fourteen Division I qualifying teams of the NCAA Division I national cross-country meet and 16 randomly chosen non-qualifying teams were recruited through the mail …

Expansion Of The Gaming Industry: Opportunities For Cooperative Extension, George W. Borden, Thomas R. Harris, Robert R. Fletcher
Expansion Of The Gaming Industry: Opportunities For Cooperative Extension, George W. Borden, Thomas R. Harris, Robert R. Fletcher
Journal of Extension
The phenomenal growth of legalized gaming over the last 10-to-15 years has generated a great deal of discussion at the national, state, and community levels. All but two states have some form of legalized gaming. In 1992, a national gaming survey conducted by the Center for Economic Development at the University of Nevada, Reno found that many states perceive legalized gaming as part of their economy. However, no formal Cooperative Extension educational programming is being conducted that addresses the wide array of issues surrounding legalized gaming. Is there an opportunity for Cooperative Extension to provide educational programming addressing issues specific …

Using Distance Education To Teach The New Food Label To Extension Educators, Barbara Struempler, Suzette M. Jelinek, Amanda H. Brown, Laura G. Sanders
Journal of Extension
Purpose of this study was to determine the ability of Extension educators to increase their knowledge of the new food label through distance education. Instruction was provided via an Extension satellite program to 97 county agents and 67 female program assistants. The participants completed pre- and post-tests; responses were analyzed by Student's t test to determine change in knowledge about "Nutrition Facts." County agents' mean post-test score was significantly higher than the mean pre-test score. Program assistants scored lower than county agents, yet were knowledgeable about the food label with a significantly higher mean post-test score than pre-test score. This …
Ohio Pasture For Profit Schools: Designing A Successful Format For Grazing Courses, Mark L. Bennett, Christopher D. Penrose, Henry M. Bartholomew
Ohio Pasture For Profit Schools: Designing A Successful Format For Grazing Courses, Mark L. Bennett, Christopher D. Penrose, Henry M. Bartholomew
Journal of Extension
Improved grazing systems offer a profitable sustainable alternative for livestock producers in Ohio. In 1994, Extension agents and state specialists formed an Integrated Forage Management Team and designed regional "Pasture for Profit Schools" for Ohio. Ten teaching outlines were developed that included text and scripts to present in a series of two to three classes. Notebooks and fact sheets were developed, and an on-farm case study would be provided. Twenty-five schools from 1994-96 have been attended by over 700 participants providing an instructor to student ratio of 1:15. Several states have requested the program for implementation.
An Investment In The Future: Employee Wellness, Cindy S. Oliveri, Deanna Tribe, Elaine Collins, Rebecca Culbertson
An Investment In The Future: Employee Wellness, Cindy S. Oliveri, Deanna Tribe, Elaine Collins, Rebecca Culbertson
Journal of Extension
The Take Charge of Your Health Conference gave employees in one Ohio Extension district access to a major medical facility and also helped develop a partnership between the University Medical Center and Extension. As a group, employees were found to be at risk due to mean values outside the ideal range for total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, Diastolic Blood Pressure, and Body Mass Index. Wellness programs such as this one can demonstrate an organization's commitment to employee's mental and physical well-being.

The Effects Of Enrichment Treatments On Jaguar Behavior At The Warner Park Zoo, Miranda Cagle
The Effects Of Enrichment Treatments On Jaguar Behavior At The Warner Park Zoo, Miranda Cagle
Honors Theses
Not long ago, Sasha walked onto grass for the first time in seven years. For Pasha, it was the first in six. The two jaguar inhabitants of the Warner Park Zoo, Sasha, a nine-year-old female, and Pasha, her eight-year-old half-brother, were transferred to a new enclosure on 12 November 1995. Prior to that date, they had been housed in a smaller cage with a cement floor. The new enclosure was a long-awaited improvement for the zoo, designed to house two of its most wellknown animals. It was expected that the new enclosure would promote more natural behavior in the two …
Vcu Voice (1997-03-24)
VCU Voice, 1988-1998
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.
