Differences In Perceptual And Subjective Body Image Between Weight Cycling And Noncycling Graduate Students, Karen Casebeer
Differences In Perceptual And Subjective Body Image Between Weight Cycling And Noncycling Graduate Students, Karen Casebeer
Dissertations
This research began as an exploratory investigation into body image differences between individuals who were weight cyclers and those who were noncyclers. Participants were fem ale and m ale graduate students (n= 444) who completed the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire (Cash, 1990a), the Contour Drawing Rating Scale (M.A. Thompson & Gray, 1995), and the Weight History Questionnaire (W H Q ), a researcher developed self-report survey of weight, dieting, and demographic information. Data gathered from the WHQ were used to identify pairs of individuals who were matched on cycling status, gender, age, and body mass index. Fifteen such pairs were …
Theoretical And Conceptual Lacunae In Sociological Theories Of Development: The Puerto Rican Anomaly, Dennis Malaret
Theoretical And Conceptual Lacunae In Sociological Theories Of Development: The Puerto Rican Anomaly, Dennis Malaret
Dissertations
Puerto Rico is presently facing serious economic and social problems which are characteristic of a neocolony. Many of these problems are associated with Puerto Rico's historical path of industrial development adopted in 1940s. This study, therefore, focuses on economic and development policies implemented in Puerto Rico since the early 1900s and the political and economic role the U.S. has played in such policies.
To understand Puerto Rico's structural problems, a theoretical framework has been developed. This framework combines developmentalist theories such as modernization, dependency, capitalist world economy and indigenous Puerto Rican theorizing. These theories have been critically assessed for their …

外科臨床教育改革方案:外科100, 佐武 林, 金堅 張
Journal of Medical Education

North Carolina Swine Evaluation Station: Adapting To Meet The Needs Of A Rapidly Changing Industry, M Todd See
Journal of Extension
To meet current and future demands for information needed by specialized and technically advanced pork producers the focus of the North Carolina Swine Evaluation Station was changed. The new program was designed to assist in the definition of production potential and goals, development of least-cost feeding and management strategies, and to provide a rapid response to identified research needs. Data collected on growth performance, carcass merit, and economics have been used to develop mathematical models to help identify and meet production and financial goals while emphasizing the production of a healthy pork product that is desirable to the consumer.

School Enrichment: What Factors Attract Elementary Teachers To 4-H Science Curriculum?, Niki Nestor Mcneely, Betty J. Wells
Journal of Extension
Today's teachers are busy people. They teach class, grade papers, attend assemblies, work lunch, hall and bus duty, and complete many other job assignments. Extension professionals have an opportunity to build partnerships with classroom teachers through the 4-H Science curriculum and programs. Most lessons from the curriculum require fairly common materials and not much preparation time, making it ideal for teachers with limited resources.
Anthroposophic Perspectives In Primary Care, Ira S. Cantor Md, Steven Rosenzweig Md
Anthroposophic Perspectives In Primary Care, Ira S. Cantor Md, Steven Rosenzweig Md
Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers
A core challenge of contemporary medicine is to integrate the technological successes of biomedical science with a comprehensive under-standing of the physical, psychosocial, ecological, and spiritual dimensions of health and illness. Toward this end, bridges are being created between conventional medicine and alternative systems of healing which reflect a holistic model of the human being. Even when both conventional and complementary approaches are used side-by-side in the same patient, they remain separate in their basic assumptions and goals. Today's mechanistic disease model is cut off from such notions as life-energy, consciousness, and spirituality, so integral to many alternative paradigms. Anthroposophically …

Wheels At Camp, Judith A. Medlin
Wheels At Camp, Judith A. Medlin
Master's Projects
Students with special needs are being included into regular education classrooms in increasing numbers. Teachers in these classrooms are often reluctant to include students with special needs on overnight field trips. This reluctance stems from the teacher's concern for the associated responsibilities. The purpose of this project is to demonstrate the process developed and used to successfully send a fully included student with disabilities to camp with his non-disabled peers. Dorthea Orem' s theory of nursing provided the conceptual framework for this case example. Overnight field trips (e.g., science camp) that are fun and safe learning experiences for the student …
Evolution Of The Schistosomes (Digenea: Schistosomatoidea): The Origin Of Dioecy And Colonization Of The Venous System, Thomas R. Platt, Daniel R. Brooks
Evolution Of The Schistosomes (Digenea: Schistosomatoidea): The Origin Of Dioecy And Colonization Of The Venous System, Thomas R. Platt, Daniel R. Brooks
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Trematodes of the family Schistosomatidae are considered venous system specialists whose sister group is the vascular system generalists (Spirorchidae) of turtles. Colonization of homeotherms by vascular trematodes required precision egg laying near the conduit for egg passage to the external environment and avoidance of pathogenesis that might result in the premature death of the host. Evolution of dioecy from the hermaphroditic condition may have proceeded through androdioecy in which hermaphrodites were specialized for precision egg placement in the vascular system and larger adults became functional males. The evolution of nuclear genes suppressing female function along with cytoplasmic genes suppressing male …
Pesticide-Related Health Problems And Illness In Farm-Workers In The United Arab Emirates, Mahra Mohammed Mahmood Beshwari
Pesticide-Related Health Problems And Illness In Farm-Workers In The United Arab Emirates, Mahra Mohammed Mahmood Beshwari
Theses
Arabian Gulf countries, witnessed rapid development in many aspects of life. Although these
developments have improved the quality of life in the UAE, they have drawbacks that generated
health problems and environmental hazards. One of the consequences of rapid development is the
usage of large amounts of pesticides in agricultural production for the sake of increasing the yield of crops. However, the expanded use of these pesticides is known to result in acute respiratory symptoms and changes in body metabolism. To-date, no population-based study has been conducted to investigate the effects of pesticides on plasma amino acids and liver enzyme …
Integrating Extension In Natural Resources Graduate Education, Stephen B. Jones, James C. Finley
Integrating Extension In Natural Resources Graduate Education, Stephen B. Jones, James C. Finley
Journal of Extension
Traditionally graduate education is defined by a research project and is often complemented by classroom or laboratory teaching experience. Too infrequently, graduate educators do not capitalize on promising opportunities associated with the university's Extension mission. The nature of informal education often draws Extension faculty to contentious and timely issues that are characterized by either technology voids or awareness/knowledge shortfalls. Using case studies the article characterizes the research that is appropriate, describes the type of graduate students who may be attracted to this kind of project, and suggests a strategy for partnering and grantsmanship.
A Study Of Ideological Change In Reggae Music From 1971 To 1993, William H. Stanley
A Study Of Ideological Change In Reggae Music From 1971 To 1993, William H. Stanley
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to see if the reggae music that became popular in the United States was ideologically different from the reggae that originated in Jamaica. The hypothesized change was derived from a model developed by Humphrey Regis (1994, 1988) labeled “cultural domination by re-exportation”. It was determined that early reggae music and the Rastafarian religion had very similar ideologies. The change within reggae music was measured against the Rastafarian belief system.
A content analysis of twenty-five songs was undertaken. The method of doing ideological analysis of the reggae lyrics was derived from Cormack (1992). The sample …
Feeding Method And Maternal-Infant Bonding At One Month Postpartum, Yvonne M. Nelson
Feeding Method And Maternal-Infant Bonding At One Month Postpartum, Yvonne M. Nelson
Theses and Dissertations
Bonding is an important health outcome for mothers and infants during the postpartum period. The method of feeding an infant, whether by breast or bottle, provides variation in opportunities for frequency and duration of maternal-infant interaction that is thought to be necessary for the bonding to occur. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a difference in bonding at six weeks postpartum among mothers who breast-fed, combined breast and bottle-feedings or bottle-fed. Pregnant women of al ages including those who were less than 18 years and married were invited to participated during the third trimester of …

Predator Deterrence And 2,4-Dibromophenol Conservation By The Enteropneusts Saccoglossus Bromophenolosus And Protoglossus Graveolens, Cem Giray, Gary M. King
Faculty Publications
Saccoglossus bromophenolosus King et al., 1994 and Protoglossus graveolens Giray and King, 1996 contain high concentrations of 2,4-dibromophenol (DBP), the function of which is uncertain. Mature enteropneusts that were collected from the field and maintained in vitro without bromide retained DBP, which is inconsistent with active DBP secretion into the burrow environment. DBP was also conserved during field manipulations that decreased food availability in situ. Further, DBP did not deter predation in feeding experiments with the anomuran crab Pagurus longicarpus and the polychaetes Glycera dibranchiata, Nereis virens and Nepthys incisa. The hermit crabs fed on S. bromophenolosus readily, and in …

Competitive Interactions Among Symbiotic Fungi Of The Southern Pine Beetle, Kier D. Klepzig, Richard T. Wilkens
Competitive Interactions Among Symbiotic Fungi Of The Southern Pine Beetle, Kier D. Klepzig, Richard T. Wilkens
Dartmouth Scholarship
The southern pine beetle, a damaging pest of conifers, is intimately linked to three symbiotic fungi. Two fungi, Ceratocystiopsis ranaculosus and Entomocorticium sp. A, are transported within specialized structures (mycangia) in the beetle exoskeleton and are mutualists of the beetle. A third fungus, Ophiostoma minus, is transported externally on the beetle exoskeleton (phoretically) and is an antagonist of the beetle. This study examined competitive interactions among these three fungi. The results of de Wit replacement series and primary and secondary resource capture assays with these fungi provide strong evidence for differential competition between the phoretic and mycangial fungi. O. minus …
