The Voice: 1991-2000
Wooster makes the list of top 25 Colleges producing Peace Corps graduates. Wooster Communication Club, Lambda Pi Eta, was honored as the national chapter of the year. Muslim students on campus held a panel about Islam. Wooster hosted a College Bowl trivia competition, also known as the [sic] 'battle of the brains.' The arts and entertainment section gives a rave review of the animated film 'Anastasia,' recently released by rival Disney animators, Fox Studios. The final three pages cover sports news.

A Profile Of The Nigerian Educational System And Policy Options For Improved Educational Development For Rapid Economic Growth And Development, M O. Ojo, O. Adesanya, A. Bamidele
CBN Occasional Papers
Attempts is made in this paper to situate Nigeria's educational system within the context of her overall economic development in view of the universal acceptance of the ultimate importance of human resources in determining the level and manner of economic progress. The various ways in which education contributes to the process of economic development are explored. A statistical review and appraisal of the Nigerian Educational system show that given its current level, the system is under-developed as reflected by an overall adult literacy ratio of 49.5% and primary school enrollment level of 63.5% of the primary school-age cohort as at …

Autonomy, Responsibility And Human Maturity, Bruce M. Taylor
Autonomy, Responsibility And Human Maturity, Bruce M. Taylor
University of Dayton Review
The Humanities Base theme of Autonomy and Responsibility, as we have seen tonight and throughout the Symposium presentations, is conceptually slippery and offers challenges in interpretation for both faculty and students. Dr. Gene August mentioned in his keynote address that the terms are usually presented as if in tension with one another: "Autonomy versus Responsibility." History records numerous examples of persons who, when faced with momentous opportunities for choice, acted with responsibility as they saw it. Dr. August, however, introduces a different interpretation of the relationship between autonomy and responsibility. In his announcement of the showing of our film for …

Synchronizing Estrus And Improving Subsequent Production And Performance With Prostaglandin F2 Alpha And Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotropin, Bryan Kutz
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Two-hundred-seventy-two sows were utilized in two trials to evaluate the effects of prostaglandin and pregnant mare serum on reducing weaning to estrus interval, increasing the degree of estrus synchrony and improving fertility at estrus resulting in improved pregnancy rates and subsequent litter performance. Sows were randomly allotted to treatments. In trial 1, sows were assigned to one of three treatments: T1 (n=18; l0mg of PGF2α /hd 24-48 hrs. after parturition), T2 (n=20; lOmg of PGF 2 α /hd at weaning) and controls (n=20). No differences (P>.05) were observed for survival rate and 21D litter wt. among treated and the …

Maternal Age: Influence On Length Of Gestation And Birth Weight, Charlotte Bratcher
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The findings indicated no significant differences among the age groups in relation to infant birth weight nor in relation to the risk factors of smoking, maternal weight gain, trimester of first entry into prenatal care, or marital status They did indicate a significant difference [F(2,85) = 4.1364, p < .05] between the oldest and the youngest group (CD = 3.37, a = .05) in relation to gestational length. These findings are significant for healthcare providers in rural areas, since much of the previous research had been done in highly urbanized or inner city settings.

Jane Addams On Autonomy And Responsibility, Marilyn Fischer
Jane Addams On Autonomy And Responsibility, Marilyn Fischer
University of Dayton Review
In 1889 with her college friend, Ellen Gates Starr, Jane Addams opened "Hull House" on Chicago's Halsted Street, in an immigrant neighborhood of 18 nationalities. Reflecting on those early days, Addams remembered thinking that "… the mere foothold of a house, easily accessible, ample in space, hospitable, and tolerant in spirit … would be in itself a serviceable thing for Chicago. … Hull House was soberly opened on the theory that the dependence of classes on each other is reciprocal; and that as the social relation is essentially a reciprocal relation, it gives a form of expression that has peculiar …

Puncturing Ability Of Bat Canine Teeth: The Tip, Patricia W. Freeman, William N. Weins
Puncturing Ability Of Bat Canine Teeth: The Tip, Patricia W. Freeman, William N. Weins
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Casts of upper canine teeth of 15 species of microchiropteran bats were fixed securely into a testing machine and made to puncture the bloom side of an apple. The force necessary to break through the surface of the apple was regressed against both shape of the tip of the canine and the size of the animal. Sharper tips require less force to puncture than blunt ones. Results were also verified using giant two-dimensional models of Plexiglas™ with sharp and blunt tips that were loaded onto a Plexiglas™ beam. Fringes, or stress lines, are more highly concentrated at the point of …

Analysis Of The Skeletal Remains From The Knobloch Site, 20ae633, Allegan County, Michigan, Alexandra D. Bybee
Masters Theses
The skeletal remains of at least thirty individuals were recovered from the Knobloch site, 20AE633, Allegan County, Michigan. The site is from the Late Woodland period, a time which saw a variety of strategies for food procurement, including hunting, gathering, fishing, and agriculture. It is not known to what extent these strategies were practiced. The results of trace element analysis of skeletal samples from the Knobloch site assemblage indicate a diet reliant on hunting and gathering.

Praise for Fred Plum can take many forms: for pedagogical dynamism, for depth and breadth of contributions to neurology and neuroscience, for sure-handed guidance of a department that has infused neurology with today’s and tomorrow’s leaders, and for a truly uncanny ability to fan a drive to excel in those he has touched. Mindful of his admonition to be substantive in what one says and does, my praise will embody a few reflections on the enduring legal and social impact of the “point of view” he and Bryan Jennett authored for the journal Lancet in 1972.
