The Social Construction Of Unique Caring Relationships: Metaphors And Descriptors Of Aids And Mutuality In Buddy Dyads, Renee Maday Apr 1997

The Social Construction Of Unique Caring Relationships: Metaphors And Descriptors Of Aids And Mutuality In Buddy Dyads, Renee Maday

Communication

This study explores how acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is socially constructed in buddy dyads as revealed by the written metaphors and descriptors supplied by cultural members through a survey instrument. A buddy dyad consists of a volunteer caregiver and a person with AIDS (PWA). The metaphors and descriptors that the buddies recounted provide an understanding of these special relationships and the social construction of AIDS in this uniquely affected population.

Analysis revealed that AIDS is most often constructed as integral to community and activism in the AIDS Culture. The buddy relationship is most often constructed as a friendship rather …

Investigations Of Health Status And Body Condition Of Harbor Seals (Phoca Vitulina) In The Gulf Of Alaska, Brian Scott Fadely Apr 1997

Investigations Of Health Status And Body Condition Of Harbor Seals (Phoca Vitulina) In The Gulf Of Alaska, Brian Scott Fadely

Marine Biology

Harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) declines during the past 20 years in the Kodiak Island and Prince William Sound regions contrast with stable or slightly increasing populations in southeastern areas of Alaska. Aspects of health status and body condition were investigated to test the hypothesis that these declines were driven by nutritional limitation, and to determine whether recent differential population trajectories among Kodiak Island, Prince William Sound, and southeast Alaska could have health-related components. For comparisons between 1992-96, three aspects of health status were examined; blood chemistry, blubber distribution and quantity; and blubber quality. Clinical ranges of plasma chemistries and hematologies …

Physiology Of The Endocrine, Cardiorespiratory And Nervous Systems In Pinnipeds: Integrative Approach And Biomedical Considerations, Tania Zenteno-Savin Apr 1997

Physiology Of The Endocrine, Cardiorespiratory And Nervous Systems In Pinnipeds: Integrative Approach And Biomedical Considerations, Tania Zenteno-Savin

Marine Biology

This thesis explored several aspects of the hormonal and cardiovascular physiology in pinnipeds (seals and sea lions). Plasma concentrations of the vasoactive hormones angiotensin II (Ang II), arginine vasopressin (AVP, the antidiuretic hormone) and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) were studied in six species of seals and sea lions. Resting levels of AVP, ANP and Ang II in these pinnipeds were similar to those reported for other vertebrate species, including humans. Age-related differences were found in the concentrations of these hormones in seals and sea lions. Geographic differences in hormone concentrations were found in Steller sea lions and harbor seals. To …

Kids Count Alaska 1997, Norman Dinges, Claudia Lampman, Ann Garret, Mera Atlis, Olga Efimova, Alexandra Hill, Barbara Minton

ISER Reports

From 1991 through 1995, nearly 55,400 babies were born in Alaska. The overwhelming majority (89 percent) were born to mothers at least 20 years old. But that still leaves more than 6,000 babies born to teenage mothers during the first half of the 1990s. And more than a third of those babies were born to mothers under 18 years old. Teenage mothers and their children face economic disadvantages (see Births to Teens indicator), but they also face health risks. Half the youngest mothers (15 and under) and nearly four in ten older teenagers get inadequate prenatal care. Even among mothers …

Physiological Adaptations For Overwintering By The Black-Capped Chickadee (Parus Atricapillus) In Interior Alaska (64 Degrees North Latitude), Susan Marie Sharbaugh Apr 1997

Physiological Adaptations For Overwintering By The Black-Capped Chickadee (Parus Atricapillus) In Interior Alaska (64 Degrees North Latitude), Susan Marie Sharbaugh

Biological Sciences

Winter in interior Alaska (64$\sp\circ$N) is characterized by short photoperiod (LD 5:19) and chronic subfreezing temperatures. These conditions present a physiological challenge to overwintering animals. This challenge increases as body size decreases. In small animals, higher surface to volume ratio and concomitant higher mass-specific metabolic rate (compared to larger animals) vastly increase energetic demand. This thesis focuses on the physiological adaptations of the smallest (12 g) overwintering bird in interior Alaska, the Black-capped Chickadee (Parus atricapillus). To determine if seasonal acclimatization of Black-capped Chickadees at high latitude differs from that of conspecifics at lower latitudes, standard metabolic rates (SMR), metabolic …

Value Based Marketing For Fed Cattle: A Discussion Of The Issues, Scott Fausti, Steve Schamber, Dwight Adamson Apr 1997

Value Based Marketing For Fed Cattle: A Discussion Of The Issues, Scott Fausti, Steve Schamber, Dwight Adamson

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

Beef demand in the United States began to weaken relative to the demand for pork and poultry in the 1970s. The literature offers two possible explanations: 1) the lifestyles explanation; and 2) the relative-price explanation. Barkema and Drabenstott (1990) review the literature concerning the market share issue and concisely outline the two possible explanations: "The lifestyle argument suggests that consumers chose to eat less beef due to health concerns and changes in lifestyles. The relative-prices explanation suggests consumers switched from beef to poultry because beef became relatively more expensive than poultry." The issue of improving beefs competitiveness against other domestic …

Breakfast For Champions, Brenda Ragonesi Apr 1997

Breakfast For Champions, Brenda Ragonesi

Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of participating in the school breakfast program on performance in mathematics by children of low socioeconomic status. Stanford Achievement Test (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1989) scores in mathematics were collected for children who qualified for and joined the school based, publicly funded, breakfast program, in a small rural Western New York district, both before and after this program became available. There were a total of 24 children who met this requirement and joined the program during second, third, or fourth grade. A control group was comprised of children in the same …
