Paper Session I-D - Irradiation: The Effects On Our Food, Chris Greenstein Apr 1997

Paper Session I-D - Irradiation: The Effects On Our Food, Chris Greenstein

Space Congress® Proceedings

A reason for this project is to determine if the irradiation process is an effective means of food preservation.

It is believed that the irradiation process will significantly increase the shelf life of certain foods, (ie: mushrooms, onions, apples, and potatoes). For the following reason this should hold true: The irradiation process kills any bacteria present in the food. Although food contamination can occur at any time, logically, the irradiation process will make the growth of bacteria start over, and therefore delay the decaying of the food.

To determine how much the shelf life of these foods will be improved, …

Paper Session I-D - Marsville - Elementary Students Design A Colony Of The Future, Laura Reeves Apr 1997

Paper Session I-D - Marsville - Elementary Students Design A Colony Of The Future, Laura Reeves

Space Congress® Proceedings

The Air Force Phillips Laboratory sponsors a yearly event called Marsville, in which 350 fifth grade students design and build a life-size model of a Martian colony and the life support systems to support it. The program aims to 1) expose students to technological, scientific and environmental issues related to space exploration, 2) demonstrate problem solving and team learning using a cooperative model, and 3) provide students with positive role models from the fields of science and technology. The Marsville concept was conceived by the Challenger Center and is one of many educational outreach programs offered by Phillips Laboratory.

The Prevalence Of Adoption Among Children Diagnosed With Learning Disabilities And Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Karma Jo Roach Apr 1997

The Prevalence Of Adoption Among Children Diagnosed With Learning Disabilities And Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Karma Jo Roach

Theses & Honors Papers

This study investigated the prevalence of adoption among children diagnosed with Learning Disabilities (LD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Parents who were members of the Learning Disabilities Association (LDA) of a mid Atlantic state completed a two-part questionnaire with information about their school aged live-at-home children. A Chi-Square one sample test was used to compute a chi square statistic based on the observed frequency in the study and the expected frequency of adoption in the general population. The Chi-Square value was 75.773 (df=l) with a significance level of .0001. This shows a significantly greater than expected prevalence of adoption …

The Impact Of Interscholastic Activity Program Participation On Self-Concept, Melanie L. Lawrence Apr 1997

The Impact Of Interscholastic Activity Program Participation On Self-Concept, Melanie L. Lawrence

Theses and Dissertations

Self-concept is one of the most important constructs in an individual's life. It is the backbone of personal development. The purpose of the present study is to determine whether adolescent students participating in an interscholastic athletic program (basketball) accomplish more substantial gains in self-concept than their non-participant peers. The Tennessee Self-Concept Scale (TSCS:2) was used to assess the baseline data of 40 high school students. Twenty of the students composed the non-active control group, while 20 students composed the experimental, active group. After a ten-week interval, post-test data was gathered. Although results differed based on individual scores, on the average, …

A Study Of The Effectiveness Of A Whole Language Instructional Approach In Stimulating Emergent Literacy Development Among At-Risk Kindergarten Students, Eileen C. Baxter Apr 1997

A Study Of The Effectiveness Of A Whole Language Instructional Approach In Stimulating Emergent Literacy Development Among At-Risk Kindergarten Students, Eileen C. Baxter

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a whole language instructional approach as a means of stimulating the emergent literacy development of kindergarten students determined to be "at risk." Meaningful growth on reliable observation surveys would indicate a possible correlation between the use of whole language instructional techniques and emergent literacy development.

A review of the literature indicates that young children acquire emergent literacy concepts and skills most efficaciously when they are immersed in a print-rich environment in which a variety of forms and functions are used in meaningful activities.

The study consisted of thirty students …
