A Stable Isotope Study Of Organic Cycling And The Ecology Of An Anchialine Cave Ecosystem, John W. Pohlman, Thomas M. Iliffe, Luis A. Cifuentes

Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope data, complemented with other geochemical parame ters, were used to identify the sources of organic matter that support the food web of an anchialine cave ecosystem in the northeastern Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Anchialine caves, common along tropical karstic and volcanic coastlines, are completely or partially inundated by highly stratified layers of fresh and marine waters. Stable isotope data from the cave fauna, the particulate organic matter (POM) from the cenote pool and from the cave, the forest soil and the cave sediments indicated that at least 3 sources of nutritive organics could support the anchialine …

Climate And Caribou: Effects Of Summer Weather On The Chisana Caribou Herd, Elizabeth A. Lenart

In 1989, the Chisana caribou (Rangifer tarandus) herd in the northern Wrangell Mountains, Alaska declined substantially in population size and productivity. Summers were significantly warmer and slightly drier during years the herd was declining (1989-1995) compared with years when the herd was stable or increasing (1981-1988). We increased air temperature and decreased precipitation with a plastic tent, decreased light intensity with a shade cloth, and increased precipitation by adding water to determine climatic effects on nutrient content and biomass of caribou forage during summer in 1994 and 1995 in the subarctic tundra. Walrus Feeding: A Re-Examination, Gay Glover Sheffield

Biological Sciences

A new approach for analyzing walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) diet was examined. Controlled gastric digestion experiments determined the relative rates at which different kinds of food items became unidentifiable. The ability to identify prey items varied within and among prey types. The laboratory experiments provided a new basis for examining diet data by characterizing the condition of stomach samples based on the rates at which different prey types were digested. Stomach content data acquired during 1952-1991 from 798 Pacific walruses were compiled, and interpretations about feeding habits were re-examined. This document summarizes key findings from a survey conducted on March 19, 1997 with 338 homeless individuals and 94 families sheltered or served by 33 of 40 shelter programs in the City of Boston. The data presented in this report were collected at one point in time. Point in time data results in an overrepresentation of the "longer term" homeless, and offers limited insight regarding the structural dynamics underlying movement from homelessness to residential stability (Culhane, Lee, Wachter, 1996; White, 1996). Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)

This working paper presents findings from the first annual Nebraska Rural Poll. The study is based on 1,971 responses from households in the 87 nonmetropolitan counties in the state. The objectives of this paper are to provide information on how rural Nebraskans perceive the importance of various programs funded by the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR). The survey questions about IANR programs were included as a separate one page insert that was included in the large Rural Poll survey booklet. Because the IANR questions were marked “optional,” one must be cautious in drawing definitive conclusions from the responses. …
