Accountability Of Health Service Providers:Comparing Internal Markets And Managedcompetition Reform Models, Colleen M. Flood Oct 1997

Accountability Of Health Service Providers:Comparing Internal Markets And Managedcompetition Reform Models, Colleen M. Flood

Dalhousie Law Journal

A numberof countries, including the U.K., NewZealand, the Netherlands, and the U.S., have attempted to reform their health care systems using "internal market" or "managed competition" reform models. These models signal a departure from reliance on passive indemnity payers or insurers and require proactive purchasers to intervene actively and manage allocation decisions made by physicians. The author explores how these models will ensure the accountability of these new decision-makers to the citizens and patients they ultimately represent. Neither model is found to address accountability issues sufficiently. However, the managed competition model offers the promise of tailoring market (exit), political (voice) …

The Effects Of Nutrition Package Claims, Nutrition Facts Panels, And Motivation To Process Nutrition Information On Consumer Product Evaluations, Scott B. Keller, Mike Landry, Jeanne Olson, Anne M. Velliquette, Scot Burton, J. Craig Andrews Oct 1997

The Effects Of Nutrition Package Claims, Nutrition Facts Panels, And Motivation To Process Nutrition Information On Consumer Product Evaluations, Scott B. Keller, Mike Landry, Jeanne Olson, Anne M. Velliquette, Scot Burton, J. Craig Andrews

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

In a laboratory experiment using a between-subjects design, the authors examine the effects on nutrition and product evaluations of nutrition claims made (e.g., "99% fat free; " "low in calories") on a product package, product nutrition value levels, and enduring motivation to process nutrition information. Enduring motivation is shown to moderate the effects of product nutrition value on consumer evaluations. Also, nutrition claims interact with product nutrition value in affecting consumer perceptions of manufacturer credibility. Given the availability of nutrient levels in the Nutrition Facts panel on the back of the mock package, nutrition claims on the front of the …

Bolivia And Coca: Law, Policy, And Drug Control, Melanie R. Hallums Oct 1997

Bolivia And Coca: Law, Policy, And Drug Control, Melanie R. Hallums

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

International drug trafficking looms large in the future of international relations. Although drug production and consumption can no longer be labeled as problems belonging to a few discrete nations, some countries' identities in the international arena are still shaped by their perception as drug-producing nations. Bolivia is one such country. Coca and cocaine have dominated its modern history and will continue to dominate its future. Bolivia's experience, however, is representative of not only other Andean nations' struggles with the drug epidemic, but of the international community's struggle with drug trafficking.

This Note sheds light on the legal tools to address …

Community Health Sciences

Childhood pneumonia continues to be the second highest contributor to childhood morbidity and mortality in all ethnic groups in Pakistan. Information on community perceptions and management is largely limited to the Punjabi populace. In this study, ethno-specific illness terminologies, recognition and severity indicators and resort to treatment options for childhood pneumonia are explored among the two main ethnic groups in Sindh. Differences In Married Versus Maritally Disrupted Children's Frequency Of Contact With Their Mothers, Sonya Dee Thompson Oct 1997

Differences In Married Versus Maritally Disrupted Children's Frequency Of Contact With Their Mothers, Sonya Dee Thompson

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

This study explores the effects of children's marital status on the frequency of contact they have with their mothers. As American society ages and marital disruption remains high, it is important to determine if there are differences in the relationships adult children have with their aging parents. A secondary analysis was conducted on data collected in 1986 for the General Social Survey. Two hypotheses were created from theory:

(1) From dependency and obligation theories, it was predicted that maritally disrupted adult children would report having greater contact with their mothers than married adult children.

(2) From status and resource adjustment …

County Extension Agents And On-Farm Research Work: Results Of A Kansas Survey, David Norman, Stanley Freyenberger, Bryan Schurle Oct 1997

County Extension Agents And On-Farm Research Work: Results Of A Kansas Survey, David Norman, Stanley Freyenberger, Bryan Schurle

Journal of Extension

This paper reports the results of a survey designed to ascertain information about on-farm research, that is, on-farm work (OFW) implemented by county Extension agents (CEAs) in Kansas. The survey collects information on the types of OFW, who was responsible for it, what data were collected, what was done with the results, and attitudes of CEAs toward OFW. The survey results indicate that OFR associated with CEAs in Kansas is fairly common, that CEAs have positive attitudes for OFR and play important roles in initiating, implementing, analyzing, and distributing the results of such work, but major constraints exist to expanding …

Development And Evaluation Of Activity-Oriented Nutrition Classes For Pregnant And Parenting Teens, Darcy Owen, Patricia Kendall, Karen Wilken Oct 1997

Development And Evaluation Of Activity-Oriented Nutrition Classes For Pregnant And Parenting Teens, Darcy Owen, Patricia Kendall, Karen Wilken

Journal of Extension

A 4-week nutrition workshop series for pregnant and parenting teens was developed and pilot-tested with four groups of teens (n=60); 10 teens served as the control. Evaluation methods consisted of pre/post knowledge tests, skill/behavior checklists, and 24-hour food recalls. Mean knowledge score increased significantly (p < 0.001) from 58% pre-workshop to 87% post-workshop compared to no change in the control group. further, 87% of participants reported nutrition-related improvements in skills/behaviors. despite this, no significant improvement in self-reported dietary intake was seen. observed barriers to dietary change included lack of control over food purchasing and preparation and lack of readiness to change dietary habits.

Backpack Buddies: A Newsletter Series For Parents, Rose Fisher Merkowitz, Kathy Jelley, Elaine Collins, Carol Ford Arkin

Journal of Extension

Family and Consumer Sciences educators continually have parents expressing need for information to help them deal with the challenges faced in raising children. These same parents, however, are often reluctant to attend formal parenting classes. "Backpack Buddies" is an innovative monthly newsletter series designed to send home in the backpacks of kindergarten students. A survey of parents receiving the newsletter for one year revealed positive findings. Seventy-seven percent of respondents liked receiving parenting information in the newsletter format and 85% found the information helpful in coping with child rearing challenges.

Workplace Education At The Bottom Rungs, Andrés Torres Sep 1997

Workplace Education At The Bottom Rungs, Andrés Torres

New England Journal of Public Policy

In the late 1980s, observers of the Massachusetts hospital industry were predicting a severe shortfall in skilled technical workers. The Worker Education Program (WEP) emerged as one of several responses to this projected labor shortage. It was premised on the idea of an internal solution to the need for workforce development, shifting the focus from external recruitment to upgrading of incumbents — nutrition, maintenance, clerical, and secretarial staff— and from traditional classroom training to workplace education. Other features of the WEP model made it an extremely interesting experiment: it was operated by labor-management partnership, it was located statewide in nine …
