Ecological Interactions Between Chilo Orichalcocilielus Strand And Chio Partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) On The Kenya Coast, Vivian Chinyere Ofomata

Laboratory studies were conducted to determine the quantities of maize and sorghum stems consumed by larvae of C. partellus and C. orichalcociliel/us as an indication of the amount of damage caused by these species to cereal crops. Results revealed that larvae of C. partellus consumed a greater quantity of maize than C. orichalcociliel/us on a daily basis and throughout the larval lifetime. C. partellus also consumed more sorghum than C. orichalcociliellus on a daily basis, but both species consumed equal amounts of sorghum in their larval lifetimes despite the fact that C. partellus completed a larval generation in a shoter …

Patterns Of Relationship Between Banana (Musa Spp.) Types And The Banana Weevil, Cosmopolites Sordidus (Germar)(Coleoptera:Curculionidae), Alfred Joseph Sumani
All PhD Dissertations
Banana (Musa spp.) is an important food crop of the humid tropical lowland areas of the world. Banana production is beset by several problems, related to crop husbandry, selection of planting material, soils, diseases, and pests. Although more than 25 borers have been recorded on banana, the banana weevil Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar) (Curculionidae) is regarded as the major contributor to the general loss in plant vigour and yield. However, some banana cultivars have been found to show resistance/tolerance to the weevil's attack. Little is known about the mechanisms that render some cultivars resistant/tolerant. In this study the relationship between the …

Arsenic, Mercury, Selenium, And Organochlorine Compounds In Interior Least Tern Eggs In The Northern Great Plains States, 1992-1994, George T. Allen, Susan Humphreys Blackford
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
The purpose of this study was to evaluate concentrations of arsenic, mercury, selenium, and chlorinated hydrocarbon compounds in interior least tern eggs from the northern Great Plains states from 1992 through 1994. The Environmental Contaminants Specialists in Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Montana agreed on a standard protocol for collection and analyses of eggs during the study period.
Addled, fiooded, or abandoned eggs collected during the study period were submitted for chemical analysis by the Environmental Contaminants Specialist in each state.
A total of 104 eggs were analyzed for arsenic, mercury, and selenium; 78 of them also were …

Comparing Two Strategies To Modify Dietary Behavior And Serum Cholesterol, Kim D. Reynolds, Judith L. Gillum, David J. Hyman, Tim Byers, Sarah A. Moore, Gilles Paradis, June A. Flora, Karen Lazarus
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
Aim: To test the hypothesis that a strategy including cholesterol screening and dietary education is more effective than dietary education alone in changing dietary behavior and serum cholesterol levels.
Methods: Individuals at four worksites were enrolled in a randomized trial with a 'full intervention' condition in which subjects were told their serum cholesterol value and also received a dietary change kit (n=236), and a 'partial intervention' condition in which subjects received the same dietary change kit, but were not told their serum cholesterol value (n=284). Individuals (n=115) in two worksites served as a nonrandomized 'untreated control group'. Subjects were tested …

Preference For Flavoured Foods By Lambs Conditioned With Intraruminal Administration Of Nitrogen, Juan J. Villalba, Frederick D. Provenza
Preference For Flavoured Foods By Lambs Conditioned With Intraruminal Administration Of Nitrogen, Juan J. Villalba, Frederick D. Provenza
Behavioral Education for Human, Animal, Vegetation, and Ecosystem Management (BEHAVE)
We suggested that food preference depends on the interplay between flavour and post-ingestive effects, and we predicted that protein-restricted lambs would acquire preferences for foods paired with supplemental sources of N, including urea (Expts 1 and 2), casein (Expt 3), and gluten (Expt 4). In each experiment, twenty lambs, in two groups of ten, were conditioned as follows: on odd-numbered days, lambs in group 1 received wheat straw (Expts 1, 3, and 4) or ground barley (Expt 2) flavoured with a distinctive flavour, and lambs in group 2 received the same food but with a different flavour. On even-numbered days, …

Preference For Wheat Straw By Lambs Conditioned With Intraruminal Infusions Of Starch, Juan J. Villalba, Frederick D. Provenza
Behavioral Education for Human, Animal, Vegetation, and Ecosystem Management (BEHAVE)
We hypothesized that feed preference depends on the interplay between flavour and postingestive effects, and we tested two predictions based on this hypothesis: (1) lambs acquire preferences for poorly nutritious feeds paired with starch; and (2) preferences persist when starch is no longer administered. Twenty lambs were randomly allocated to two groups and conditioned as follows: on odd-numbered days, lambs in group 1 received onion-flavoured wheat straw and lambs in group 2 received oregano-flavoured wheat straw. On even-numbered days, the flavours were switched and starch (2.5-9.4% of the digestible energy received/d) was infused into the rumen of all animals during …
The Role Of The Federal Government In Ensuring Quality Of Care In Long-Term Care Facilities, David R. Hoffman
The Role Of The Federal Government In Ensuring Quality Of Care In Long-Term Care Facilities, David R. Hoffman
Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences
Quality of care is a concept most important to our vulnerable populations, including the elderly. When the government pays for nursing care for the elderly, it expects that it is paying for quality care. When the quality is substandard, as it was with Tucker House II, the government can and will use the False Claims Act to recover monies paid.
Environmental Malthusianism: Integrating Population And Environmental Policy, Robert M. Hardaway
Environmental Malthusianism: Integrating Population And Environmental Policy, Robert M. Hardaway
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
In his Article, Professor Hardaway argues that while Thomas Malthus may have been incorrect in his assertion that the growing population would deplete food supplies causing starvation and disease, Malthus accurately assessed the environmental impact of population. Professor Hardaway argues that overpopulation depletes natural resources and degrades the environment. He urges environmentalists to focus on population growth, rather than short term and remedial solutions, to solve environmental problems. In order to focus on population growth, society must face tough issues such as abortion, family planning, immigration, and economic growth policies.

I propose to investigate the ways that basic English composition is taught at various colleges throughout the country and to use my findings to design a Parkland-specific English 101 instructional model that integrates composition into some of our transfer and career programs, so that students would write about topics relevant to their goals while enhancing their understanding of the academic discipline they're writing about. My research would involve the League for Innovation community colleges, Alverno College, Macomb Community College, the University of Illinois at Urbana, and the National Council of Teachers of English.

G97-1314 Medication Withdrawal In Beef Cattle, Dicky D. Griffin, Dale Grotelueschen
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide lists the current withdrawal times for medications used in beef cattle.
Using proper livestock medications is very important. Proper use not only ensures maximal benefits from the medication but minimizes the chances of an unwanted residue. The National Cattlemen's Beef Association has worked hard to develop a premiere quality assurance program. In conjunction with other national and state beef and veterinary associations, the Beef Quality Assurance program now extends to almost every state in the nation. As a result, the safety and quality of beef has never been better. The outstanding record includes having an extremely low rate …
