Student Attitudes Toward Individuals With Disabilities: Inclusive Versus Traditional Classrooms In Elementary School, Heather Young Jan 1997

Student Attitudes Toward Individuals With Disabilities: Inclusive Versus Traditional Classrooms In Elementary School, Heather Young

Theses

In recent years, many schools have begun to include students with disabilities in general education classrooms. Studies on "inclusion," have shown several positive effects for students with and without disabilities. This study examines the self-reported attitudes of 185 elementary school students in inclusive and traditional classrooms, as measured by the Scale of Children's Attitudes Toward Exceptionalities (SCATE). Self-reported attitudes and experiences of general education teachers were also assessed using a survey developed by the researcher. Although statistically significant relationships were found on the SCATE, these were not logical or conclusive. Results of the teacher surveys indicate that teachers of inclusive …

OES Faculty Publications

The utility of photopigments and absorption signatures to detect and enumerate the red tide dinoflagellate, Gymnodinium breve, was evaluated in laboratory cultures and in natural assemblages. The carotenoid, gyroxanthindiester, was an adequate biomarker for G. breve biomass; water‐column concentrations corresponded with cell standing crops and chlorophyll a concentrations during bloom events in Sarasota Bay, Florida. Unlike other carotenoids, the relative abundance of gyroxanthin‐diester did not change throughout a range of physiological states in culture and the gyroxanthin‐diester: chlorophyll a ratio exhibited little variability in a natural assemblage during bloom senescence. Stepwise discriminant analysis indicated that wavelengths indicative of in vivo …

Hong Kong In United States-China Relations: The International Politics Of Hong Kong's Reversion To Chinese Sovereignty, James T. H. Tang

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This article examines the implications of the political transition of Hong Kong onUS-China relations in strategic, political and economic dimensions. It evaluates the impactof Hong Kong's changing status in the context of the engagement-containment debate onChina policy in the US. It suggests that US concerns over questions such as democracy andhuman rights and China's rejection of foreign interference' in Hong Kong would turn theterritory into a source of political conflict between the US and China. Finally it points outthat any major trade confrontation between the two countries would have serious implicationsfor the territory. The article concludes by arguing that if …

Nature And Nurture, Danger And Delight: Urban Women's Experiences Of The Natural World, Lily Kong, Belinda Yuen, Clive Briffett, Navjot S. Sodhi

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this paper, we address a research lacuna in the area of human experience of, and interaction with, nature. We focus on women in an urbanized setting, exploring their actual and desired experiences of the natural world, using Singapore as a case study. Our intention is to contribute to both the evolving theoretical and empirical discussions on this subject. Based on data collected from focus group discussions and household questionnaires, we conclude that women's relationships with nature in Singapore are underscored by a strong inclination towards nurturing: teaching, tending and caring, in a way that is not as apparent in …

Controlled Release Of Aldicarb From Carboxymethylcellulese Microcapsules, M. Yakup Arica, Mustafa Yi̇ği̇toğlu, Mustafa Lale, Fatma N. Kök, Vasıf Hasirci Jan 1997

Controlled Release Of Aldicarb From Carboxymethylcellulese Microcapsules, M. Yakup Arica, Mustafa Yi̇ği̇toğlu, Mustafa Lale, Fatma N. Kök, Vasıf Hasirci

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose was converted into microspheres by crosslinking with aluminum chloride. Various microsheres with different amounts of crosslinker, biopolymer of various concentrations and molecular weights, and with different pesticide (Aldicarb) contents and pesticide to polymer ratios were prepared. The pesticide encapsulation efficiencies and aldicarb release kinetics of the resultant microcapsules were investigated. It was possible to modify the release behaviour by varying the above parameters and to have drug release with half-lives longer than 100 hours in aqueous media. The release kinetics were described by first order and zero order kinetics.

Study Of The Barriers To The Implementation Of Computerised Information Systems In The National Health Service, Gloria Lankshear Jan 1997

Study Of The Barriers To The Implementation Of Computerised Information Systems In The National Health Service, Gloria Lankshear

Plymouth Business School Theses

In order for computerised information systems (CIS) to be utilised to their full potential they must first be successfully implemented. The acquisition and implementation process continues to be an area which is reported by the media to present problems for both public and private sector organisations (Keen, 1994; Collins, 1996). The process was originally considered to be a technical process only, but more recently there has been acknowledgement that there are human implications. The process of acquisition and implementation of CIS in the NHS has, therefore, been studied in order to identify the barriers which might be present. The research …

Kramers-Kronig Anomalous Dispersion On Single-Mode Fiber-Optic Couplers And Tapers, Arnel C. Lavarias Jan 1997

Kramers-Kronig Anomalous Dispersion On Single-Mode Fiber-Optic Couplers And Tapers, Arnel C. Lavarias

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The Kramers-Kronig relations couple the real and imaginary part of the dielectric constant of a medium, namely the refractive index n(ω) and the extinction coefficient κ(ω). Changes in n(ω) due to normal and anomalous dispersion (Kramers-Kronig effect) are investigated for the first time using fiber optic couplers and tapers. Kramers-Kronig effect is induced by evanescent wave absorption in these devices. Couplers and tapers have oscillatory spectral outputs that are highly sensitive to the refractive index of the surrounding medium. Theoretical modeling of the Kramers-Kronig effect on couplers and tapers shows two distinct effects. First, the spectral outputs of these devices …

Differential Endometrial Responses Of Primates Vs Rodents: Screening For Antiproliferative Effects Of Antiprogestins, David Williams Burleigh Jan 1997

Differential Endometrial Responses Of Primates Vs Rodents: Screening For Antiproliferative Effects Of Antiprogestins, David Williams Burleigh

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

The antiprogestin, mifepristone, has previously been shown to noncompetitively inhibit estrogen-induced endometrial proliferation in nonhuman primates (van Uem et al., 1989; Wolf et al., 1989b; Neulen et al., 1990; Neulen et al., 1996). For both economical and ethical reasons, we are encouraged to identify comparative laboratory rodent models which can substitute the need to use primate models. In the following study, we compared capabilities of the rat uterine weight bioassay versus a primate uterine bioassay, to identify the noncompetitive antiestrogenic/antiproliferative effects of mifepristone.

Long-term ovariectomized monkeys were exposed to exogenous 17β-estradiol (E2) and mifepristone in doses and regimes already demonstrated …

Choline Acetyltransferase And Carnitine Acetyltransferase Activity In Human Spermatozoa During Capacitation, Lisa A. Eccles Jan 1997

Choline Acetyltransferase And Carnitine Acetyltransferase Activity In Human Spermatozoa During Capacitation, Lisa A. Eccles

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

The regional distribution of ChAT activity in human spermatozoa is altered during in vitro capacitation and it correlates with the fertilizing potential of sperm.

Regional immunoreactivity in human spermatozoa as assessed by fluorescent immunocytochemistry was compared with ChAT and CaAT activity determined by enzymatic methodologies. Increasing proportions of sperm exhibited ChAT immunoreactivity along the equatorial region with a concomitant decrease in ChAT reactivity in the midpiece. Also, competitive studies with unlabeled ChAT blocked the equatorial region labeling; the unlabeled CaAT blocked staining along the midpiece region of the tail, suggesting some cross-reactivity of the ChAT antiserum with the CaAT enzyme. …

Diamond For Fiber-Optic Raman Spectroscopy, Jianli Zheng Jan 1997

Diamond For Fiber-Optic Raman Spectroscopy, Jianli Zheng

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Raman spectroscopy is a powerful technique for molecular structural studies and concentration measurement. Being a single beam technique, the Raman intensity depends on the optical power of the excitation source, optical alignment of the system, detector response as well as species concentration. To eliminate the unwanted variations in the system and get the concentration information of the species, intensity referencing is necessary. The existing referencing methods either use a constant Raman band of the sample, or add a chemically inert material with known concentration into the sample. Unfortunately, the former method is not always applicable and the latter is not …

Immune Responses To Final Exams In Healthy And Asthmatic Adolescents, Duck-Hee Kang, Christopher L. Coe, Donna O. Mccarthy, William B. Ershler

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Immune responses to an academic stressor were examined in healthy and asthmatic adolescents with regard to their illness symptom reports. Eighty-seven high school students completed a health diary for 2 weeks and provided three blood samples during midsemester, final-exam, and postexam periods. During exam week, all students showed significant immunological alterations from baseline: Natural killer cell activity was significantly lower, whereas lymphocyte proliferation and neutrophil superoxide release were significantly higher. These immune changes tended to return toward baseline during the postexam period, but the enhanced neutrophil reactivity continued to rise. Overall, immunological responses were similar between asthmatic subjects and controls. …

Asynchronous Distance Learning Technology: The Instructor's Perspective, Earl Alexander Evans Jan 1997

Asynchronous Distance Learning Technology: The Instructor's Perspective, Earl Alexander Evans

Masters Theses

"Advances in communications, computer technology and human-computer interfaces have enabled concurrent advances in Web-based education. A number of case studies concerning applications of Web-based education for both distance learning and on-campus programs have been published. Primarily, these studies have focused on individual assessments of the Web-based technologies. In addition, these published studies have generally highlighted the successes while little discussion about failed attempts has been presented in the literature.

In contrast, this thesis provides a broad-based assessment of applied Web technology for higher education. This research was conducted via a survey completed by twenty five university and college faculty from …

Christian Madsen- A Dane In The "Wild West", Sybil D. Needham

The Bridge

I never tire of hearing stories about Danish immigrants coming to America in the 1800' s. Their courage fills me with admiration because few of them would ever see their homeland or families again. My own great-grandparents Jens and Kristine Bagge arrived in June of 1863. Kristine died a few years later leaving five small children behind. We know she was lonely for Denmark.

Aggressive Enforcement Of Rights Involving Internet Abuses, William L. Lafuze, Valerie K. Friedrich Jan 1997

Aggressive Enforcement Of Rights Involving Internet Abuses, William L. Lafuze, Valerie K. Friedrich

Computer Law Review and Technology Journal

The information age, and particularly the development of the Internet and the World Wide Web, has enabled any individual with a personal computer to rapidly acquire information from, and disseminate information to, a worldwide base. Many unlawful activities, such as copyright infringement, may now be practiced in a new environment and manner. Due to several unique aspects of the Internet environment, traditional judicial remedies, such as monetary damages, are ineffectual. Consequently, violations of personal and property rights on the Internet present new challenges for the enforcement of such rights. More aggressive remedies, such as injunction of wrongful activities and impoundment …

The Prevention Of Non-Consensual Access To "Confidential" Health-Care Information In Cyberspace, Howard L. Steele Jr. Jan 1997

The Prevention Of Non-Consensual Access To "Confidential" Health-Care Information In Cyberspace, Howard L. Steele Jr.

Computer Law Review and Technology Journal

The latter half of the twentieth century has seen the decline of the industrial revolution and the rapid transition into an information explosion that has continued to expand at an exponential rate. Unlike the political upheavals of days gone by, this revolution appears to have the potential to dramatically change our society. For example, the advent of the computer and its application in the healthcare setting has changed the face of medicine. Today is a day of miracle drugs, laser surgeries, and telemedicine - all of which found their genesis in computers. Despite the clear advantages created by the ever-expanding …

Using Technology In The Management And Trial Of Complex Cases, Fred Misko Jr., Charles E. Ames Jan 1997

Using Technology In The Management And Trial Of Complex Cases, Fred Misko Jr., Charles E. Ames

Computer Law Review and Technology Journal

As modem society became more technologically advanced, complex tort and mass disaster litigation was sure to follow suit. Over the last twenty years, cases involving post-industrial products such as breast implants, heart valves, pesticides, Agent Orange, Bendectin, lead, and asbestos, as well as single-event mass disasters such as Bhopal and PanAm Flight 103, brought increasingly large numbers of individuals claiming serious injuries before the courts. The legal community has recently begun to focus on the impact that this complex litigation has on the practice of law and the administrative capabilities of the judicial system. Gone are the days when a …

Management And Discovery Of Electronically Stored Information, Lawrence R. Youst, Haejung Lisa Koh Jan 1997

Management And Discovery Of Electronically Stored Information, Lawrence R. Youst, Haejung Lisa Koh

Computer Law Review and Technology Journal

New technology continuously abuts the aged and tried legal principles set forth decades ago. With information creation at every user's personal computer, with access to instant communication through e-mail systems and with the wide-spread use of the Intemet, the legal standards for discovery of information must continually evolve. It is no longer sufficient for a party requesting discovery to seek paper alone. It is also no longer sufficient for a party responding to discovery to review paper files alone in an attempt to satisfy the discovery requests. As we continue to progress in this age of information, a hard copy …

Research Odyssey: Notes On Juvenile Delinquency In The States, Sarah N. Anderson '97 Jan 1997

Research Odyssey: Notes On Juvenile Delinquency In The States, Sarah N. Anderson '97

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

Presently, juvenile justice is widely acknowledged as being in a state of flux in the United States. The early 1990s saw the most substantial rise in violent crime committed by juveniles ever experienced in this country. On the heels of decades of skepticism about the effectiveness of parens patriae (the state as parent), this rise was the "proof" for many "experts" who believe that the juvenile justice system should be abolished. These skeptics reason that one criminal court could still have some latitude when sentencing younger offenders, but that kids are now committing adult crimes, so it is time to …

Incumbency Surge: Examining The 1996 Margin Of Victory For U.S. House Incumbents, Amy Tenhouse '97 Jan 1997

Incumbency Surge: Examining The 1996 Margin Of Victory For U.S. House Incumbents, Amy Tenhouse '97

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

In 1996, the American public reelected 357 members to the United States House of Representatives; of those running for reelection, 95% succeeded. Several congressmen received a large margin of victory over their political opponents, similar to election results of the past. Trends in American politics have been the overwhelming reelection rates of House incumbents as well as large margins of victory over challengers. The purpose of this paper is to examine the factors influencing incumbents’ margin of victory in the 1996 Congressional elections.
