Crime And The Nation: Prison Reform And Popular Fiction In Philadelphia, 1786-1800., Peter Thomas Okun Jan 1997

Crime And The Nation: Prison Reform And Popular Fiction In Philadelphia, 1786-1800., Peter Thomas Okun

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The prison reformers and fiction writers of post-Revolutionary Philadelphia wrote prodigiously about crime and punishment. In a correlative study, I explore juridical topoi in reformist and fictive texts familiar to republican Philadelphians. My analysis assumes a public sphere of writers and readers: while late eighteenth-century prison reforms and fictions came out of separate signifying systems, there was considerable promiscuity between them. I group areas of overlap around cultural concerns (science, murder, sex) and representational "spaces" (home, prison, nation). In either discourse, crime and punishment were useful to a post-Revolutionary aesthetic of nationalism. The scientific rhetoric of penitentiary punishment targeted the …

The influence of ACT, GED, literacy scores, learning and study skills, and the number of successfully completed developmental classes on grade point averages was researched. Students were interviewed to gain insight into students' perceptions of factors contributing to persistence in college. ACT scores were found to be good predictors of grade …

The Effect Of Estrogen On The Transcriptional Regulation And The Chromatin Remodeling Of The Very Low Density Apolipoprotein Ii Gene., Elizabeth Mambo Jan 1997

The Effect Of Estrogen On The Transcriptional Regulation And The Chromatin Remodeling Of The Very Low Density Apolipoprotein Ii Gene., Elizabeth Mambo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The chicken very low density apolipoprotein II (apoVLDLII) gene encodes an egg yolk protein that is synthesized in the liver in response to estrogen. Regulation of this gene is mediated by the estrogen receptor via two estrogen response elements (EREs) located in the promoter. Following the administration of estrogen, there is a four hour lag period prior to the detection of apoVLDLII mRNA. To examine the events that occur during this lag period, in vivo footprinting and run-on transcription assays were performed. Time courses of the transcription of the apoVLDLII gene were done using the transcription run-on assay. The antisense …

Family Firo Model Perspectives On Physical Spouse Abuse: An Exploratory Study., Antoinette Sgarlata Wiseman Jan 1997

Family Firo Model Perspectives On Physical Spouse Abuse: An Exploratory Study., Antoinette Sgarlata Wiseman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Control is often a central concept in the explanation and treatment of physical spouse abuse. This study examined the usefulness of W. J. Doherty's and N. Colangelo's Family FIRO Model in explaining issues of control in physically aggressive couple relationships. The model is an adaptation of W. Schutz's Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation theory, which predicts the interpersonal fit in relationships from the satisfaction of the partners' intrapersonal inclusion, control, and affection needs. In further describing these needs, Doherty and colleagues place issues related to control in separate need areas, which could affect the initial focus of treatment. Thirty couples recruited …

An Advocacy Coalition Approach To A Study Of The Politics Of Education In Tennessee., Patricia Ehle Ceperley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This was an instrumental case study that examined the extent to which the politics of education in Tennessee that resulted in the passage of the Education Improvement Act of 1992 and related tax increases conformed to the assumptions of the Advocacy Coalition Framework as articulated by Sabatier. The framework viewed education policy change as the result of the interaction of (a) competing advocacy coalitions within a policy subsystem over a decade or more, (b) changes that are external to the policy subsystem, and the (c) effects of stable system parameters. The researcher used a snowballing technique to identify 12 key …

A Prospective Self-Monitoring Investigation Of Naturally Occurring Reinforcement Of Exercise Behavior., Leighann Hock Forsyth

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The present investigation was based on operant theory. A prospective six-week self-monitoring design was utilized to examine naturally-occurring reinforcing and punishing effects of cardiovascular exercise in a college-aged sample of healthy women. The sample consisted of exercise initiators ({dollar}{dollar}6 months of regular exercise). Seven rewarding exercise effects emerged from factor analysis of the self-monitoring form (i.e., mood improvement, goal achievement, physical performance enhancement, exercise "high", praise from others, social affiliation, and appearance changes). Results indicated that both groups produced similar ratings for the exercise reward factors, but some factors were significantly more rewarding than others to the sample as a …

The Role Of Endothelin In Hexachloro-1,3-Butadiene-Induced Acute Renal Failure., Lara Kristen Dowland Jan 1997

The Role Of Endothelin In Hexachloro-1,3-Butadiene-Induced Acute Renal Failure., Lara Kristen Dowland

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The objective of this research was to determine if endothelin is a mediator of hexachloro-1,3-butadiene (HCBD)-induced acute renal failure. The nephrotoxicity associated with HCBD is acute tubular necrosis (ATN). HCBD-induced ATN is characterized by a decrease in renal blood flow (RBF), mediating a decline in the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), polyuria, glucosuria, proteinuria and natriuresis. These effects on the kidney are mimicked by the endogenous peptide endothelin. Endothelin is produced by many different cell types and is the most potent endogenous vasoconstrictor peptide identified to date. The renal vasculature is particularly sensitive to the vasoconstrictive action of endothelin. Endothelin causes …

Thematic analysis of the data resulted in five categories: coming to the role, perceptions held by subjects regarding image, people who may have influenced the image, behaviors that actualized the image and self-perceived …

Chromatin Structure Of Mag Gene Regulatory Region., Iwona Hirschler-Laszkiewicz Jan 1997

Chromatin Structure Of Mag Gene Regulatory Region., Iwona Hirschler-Laszkiewicz

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Myelin associated glycoprotein (MAG) plays an important role in myelinogenesis, nerve plasticity and nerve regeneration. Hence, knowledge of how this gene is regulated may be essential for developing clinical strategies, e.g., to promote regeneration in the injured spinal cord. We employed the primer extension technique for mapping MAG gene transcription start sites. The analysis revealed 13 transcription start sites spanning 72 bp. No canonical TATA box and no known transcription initiator (Inr) sequences that position transcription complex in other TATA-less promoters were found. The structure of chromatin associated with the MAG gene was analyzed using progressive micrococcal nuclease digestion of …

This thesis proposes a plan to bridge the gap between theoretical test studies and global implementation. This thesis evaluates three communication systems as potential solutions for high-speed communication and selects one system as the solution. The three candidate systems …

Teamwork In Genetic Programming, Michael Lalena Jan 1997

Teamwork In Genetic Programming, Michael Lalena

Theses

This thesis attempts to solve food collection problems using genetic programming. The genetic program will evolve programs that mimic the way ants can collect food and bring it back to a nest. There are two special factors in this genetic program that make the ants work together in order to solve the problem, as opposed to each ant acting on its own. First, there will be a stream in the environment that the ants must cross to get to the food. Although all ants have the same program, some must move into the water and die, building a bridge for …

A Study Of Package Drops In Global Distribution Environment, Donald Appleton Jan 1997

A Study Of Package Drops In Global Distribution Environment, Donald Appleton

Theses

The focus of this study was to compile and interpret drop heights and drop frequencies data for small parcel packages moving through the Eastman Kodak Company global distribution network. The need for this study arose from the inclusion of drop height probability curves into Kodak's shipping tests for packaged product weighing less than 100 lb. Kodak packaging engineers suspected the drop heights included in the probability curves were too high in drop height and too many in frequency when compared to the actual distribution environment. The data for this study resulted from dozens of test shipments using dummy-load packages throughout …

Psychometric Properties Of A Weeping Propensity Scale., Phyllis M. Olson

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Weeping Propensity Scale is a 24-item questionnaire using a nine point Likert-type scale to query the intensity of a subject's weeping response to a variety of potentially crying-inducing situations. Results indicated that the measure has substantial reliability, both internal consistency (Cronbach alpha= .95) and test-retest reliability (r = .90). The study examined the stability of the factor structure of a revision of the Weeping Propensity Scale (WPS) and examined expected relationships with gender, instrumentality/expressiveness measured by the Personal Attributes Questionnaire (Spence, Helmreich, & Stapp, 1974),empathy measured by the Questionnaire Measure of Emotional Empathy (Mehrabian & Epstein, 1972), and the …

The Invisible Barbecue, Eben Moglen Jan 1997

The Invisible Barbecue, Eben Moglen

Faculty Scholarship

Past legislation subsidizing the development of infrastructural technology has borne the mark of political corruption. The subject matter of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 falls within the same category of legislation that has fallen prey to this process in the past. In an effort to discern whether such forces are at work today, Professor Moglen undertakes a critical examination of the metaphors that pervade the current scholarly discourse on the subject of telecommunications law. Terms such as "Superhighway," "Broadcasting," and "Market for Eyeballs" reveal a great deal about the implicit assumptions at work behind the current scholarship and legislation, and …

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Aviation human factors instructors employed by University Aviation Association (UAA) member institutions and aviation flight students from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIUC) were asked to rank nine teaching methods according to perceived effectiveness in each of four subject areas: flight physiology, flight psychology, aeronautical decision-making (ADM), and crew resource management (CRM). Responses were compiled into two categories, students and instructors. Analysis using the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient indicated that students and instructors generally agreed on teaching methods they considered appropriate to the four subject areas.

Old Chief V. United States: Stipulating Away Prosecutorial Accountability?, Daniel Richman Jan 1997

Old Chief V. United States: Stipulating Away Prosecutorial Accountability?, Daniel Richman

Faculty Scholarship

Earlier this year, in Old Chief v. United States, the Supreme Court finally resolved a circuit split on a nagging evidentiary issue: When a defendant charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm offers to satisfy one of the statute's elements by stipulating to the existence of a prior felony conviction, may the government decline the stipulation and prove the existence and the nature of that prior felony?

The question of evidence law resolved in Old Chief is not particularly earth-shattering. Indeed, while the Court divided five to four on the issue, neither Justice Souter's opinion …

Does Public Choice Theory Justify Judicial Activism After All?, Thomas W. Merrill Jan 1997

Does Public Choice Theory Justify Judicial Activism After All?, Thomas W. Merrill

Faculty Scholarship

Some legal scholars have argued that public choice theory justifies certain kinds of judicial activism. Others have said it does not. Given the present state of the debate, it would appear that those finding no necessary support for judicial activism have the stronger argument. I will suggest, however, that if we tweak the analysis a little further, it may turn out that public choice theory provides limited support for judicial activism after all.
