Three-Dimensional Acquisition And Display System For Ultrasonic Imaging, Rajeev Raman Jan 1997

Three-Dimensional Acquisition And Display System For Ultrasonic Imaging, Rajeev Raman

Theses

Three Dimensional biomedical ultrasonic imaging is relatively in its infancy and many areas for application like tumor detection and identification, virtual surgery planning, among others are being explored. These techniques are expected to provide the medical community with improved diagnostic and analysis capabilities. In order to better understand the image capture and processing issues in these environments, it is necessary to design and implement a reference three dimensional image capture and processing system. In a research environment, the most optimal approach to designing such systems is to leverage existing two dimensional capture technologies and enhance their capabilities for three dimensional …

The U.S. Attorney: Fateful Powers Limited Essay., Tom Rickhoff Jan 1997

The U.S. Attorney: Fateful Powers Limited Essay., Tom Rickhoff

St. Mary's Law Journal

Nothing more separates the United States from some of history’s most ruthless and resourceful enemies, the Mexican drug syndicates, than an intermittent trickle of water. In spite of this crisis, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has languished without a presidentially-appointed leader since the Branch Davidian nightmare. Considering the historical influence of the U.S. Attorney’s office, the current situation in the Western District of Texas is somewhat surprising. At one time, U.S. Attorneys exercised almost total discretion as to how the federal government impacted the lives of the powerful as well as the powerless. One of the primary obstacles in restoring effective …

The Antiterrorism Act, The Immigration Reform Act, And Ideological Regulation In The Immigration Laws: Important Lessons For Citizens And Noncitizens., Kevin R. Johnson Jan 1997

The Antiterrorism Act, The Immigration Reform Act, And Ideological Regulation In The Immigration Laws: Important Lessons For Citizens And Noncitizens., Kevin R. Johnson

St. Mary's Law Journal

This Article analyzes how the Antiterrorism Act and the Immigration Reform Act reflect a larger historical dynamic in the relationship between domestic subordination and immigration law. The U.S. government historically employed immigration laws in an effort to protect the established political and social order. History reveals a strong correlation between the severe treatment politically subversive U.S. citizens received and the constriction of the immigration laws. This Article argues the lack of constitutional protections for noncitizens helps to explain the recurrent backlash against them. The treatment of noncitizens suggests how far the government might go to suppress domestic political dissent by …

Identifying Barriers To Computer-Supported Instruction., Ragina Melton Copeland

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study was designed to determine if 1996 high school seniors who enrolled at West Virginia University at Parkersburg in the fall of 1996 were receiving equal educational opportunity with a focus on computer access and usage. The data collection consisted of two major parts: surveying the students in the 7-county service area of WVUP and interviewing at least 5 teachers or other professional staff from among each of the 11 schools located in 7 different counties. The findings of the study showed that students did not enjoy equal access to computers and computer instruction and that a combination of …

Interface Load: Deformation Behavior Of Landfill Liner Systems Over Subsurface Cavities., Ghada Shaker Ellithy Jan 1997

Interface Load: Deformation Behavior Of Landfill Liner Systems Over Subsurface Cavities., Ghada Shaker Ellithy

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The leachate collection system and the double liner required by the EPA for solid and hazardous waste landfills consist typically of a combination of geosynthetics materials and natural or processed soils. This research is conducted to study the load-deformation behavior of a multi layered landfill liner system under stresses imposed by the waste fill. Experimental and analytical work achieved in this research is summarized as follows: (1) Experimental Evaluation of the shear stress-shear deformation characteristics of seven geosynthetic interfaces encountered in landfill lining systems in addition to four geosynthetic materials and three soils. The investigated materials included: Ottawa sand, kaoline …

Isolation And Characterization Of The 22 Kd Subunit Of Gluconate Dehydrogenase Derived From Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Pao1., John David Gordon

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Approximately 95-99% of soil phosphorous is unavailable to plants, with {dollar}\\sim{dollar}90% of phosphate fertilizers also being rendered unavailable upon application. 2-Ketogluconate (2KG) has been shown to solubilize insoluble phosphates in vitro. If plants themselves could solubilize the insoluble phosphate in the soil, this would greatly reduce the need for phosphate fertilizers. Two greenhouse experiments were conducted to examine in vitro and in situ solubilization of insoluble phosphates (calcium phosphate, RP, and iron phosphate, IP) with increasing concentrations of 2KG, as seen through plant (Lycopersicon esculentum) growth and Pi uptake. In the first experiment (in situ solubilization), water alone showed a …

The Development Of A Representative Policy For Student Use Of Campus Computer Networks At Research I And Ii Institutions., Jeffrey Scott Hale Jan 1997

The Development Of A Representative Policy For Student Use Of Campus Computer Networks At Research I And Ii Institutions., Jeffrey Scott Hale

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The campus computer network is available to students on nearly every university campus. Needing to know how to interact electronically as well as the potential to reach libraries throughout the world is well chronicled and is becoming a matter of students' common knowledge. Problems that can arise on a campus range from new ways to cheat to new methods of threatening to do harm. The purpose of this study then, was to develop a representative policy for student use of campus computer networks at Research I and II institutions. Separate surveys were sent to the chief student affairs and chief …

Perimenopause: A Phenomenological Study Of Women And Health Care Providers In Rural Areas., Patricia Ann Kraft Jan 1997

Perimenopause: A Phenomenological Study Of Women And Health Care Providers In Rural Areas., Patricia Ann Kraft

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Using a four step phenomenological approach for inquiry, the researcher explored and interpreted data obtained from the lived experiences of sixteen perimenopausal women and eight health care providers living in rural areas. A purposive sampling technique was utilized. Participation was on a voluntary basis. Data collection procedures included a face-to-face semi-structured taped interview and completion of a demographic questionnaire. Following analysis of the data, twenty-two common essences were identified from intuiting of the interview data. These essences were classified into six major themes which integrated all the realities of the participants. The findings of the study revealed six major themes …

Music By Judson Bracey., Judson Frank Bracey Jan 1997

Music By Judson Bracey., Judson Frank Bracey

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This portfolio is a two-volume set of original music compositions. The works contained herein represent a variety of media and genres, including chamber and large-ensemble pieces. The works are typically tonal, with the harmony usually combining tertian and quartal chords. In the Beginning is the major work of the portfolio. A six-movement cantata for mixed chorus and orchestra, its texts are adaptations of passages (primarily) from Genesis and the Gospel of John, chosen because of their parallels of language and meaning. In each of the movements (except the fourth, which is for orchestra alone), texts from two Biblical sources are …

Goethe's Die Leiden Des Jungen Werthers: An Epistolary Novel, Or A Stage Drama In Disguise?, Ilona Klein Jan 1997

Goethe's Die Leiden Des Jungen Werthers: An Epistolary Novel, Or A Stage Drama In Disguise?, Ilona Klein

Faculty Publications

Photography of the late 1920s generated repercussions in other fields of the arts. It sparked an interdisciplinary interest in critics who balked at viewing the frozen images as merely one moment's reality, and who wanted, instead, to recompose and integrate underlying cultural, literary, or political discourse within the photographic frame. This fertile interdisciplinary backing guaranteed an in-depth interpretative dissection of artistic expression which had not been previously possible. The small photograph, a still visual image, became connected to the larger visual images of stage sets-these, a series of visual, immobile backgrounds which framed the caracters acting within.

Dimensions Of Capacity For Shared Decision Making, Cheryl Grayson Reynolds Jan 1997

Dimensions Of Capacity For Shared Decision Making, Cheryl Grayson Reynolds

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

This study was based on the rationale that no school district should design or implement a restructuring or reform initiative such as shared decision making (SDM) without a careful examination of the existing level of all the interrelated dimensions of restructuring and reform in each school. A school's capacity is critical for successful reform; therefore, if policy makers are to design successful policies, they must pay attention to the multiple dimensions of capacity in a school's climate.

This study's first purpose was to develop a survey instrument based on the precepts of shared decision making as a restructuring mechanism for …

(1997) Some Reflections On Inquiry, Community And Philosophy, Laurance J. Splitter Jan 1997

(1997) Some Reflections On Inquiry, Community And Philosophy, Laurance J. Splitter

Collected Papers of Laurance J. Splitter

Not all communities of inquiry are communities of philosophical inquiry. Still, there is something special and intrinsic about philosophy when it comes to the community of inquiry. Think of Matthew Lipman's oft-repeated claim that philosophy is the discipline that teaches children to think in the disciplines. And remember that one of his (and Dewey's) greatest insights was that children could be members of a community of inquiry. I should like to put these ideas together in the following way: irrespective of whether the inquiry engaged in by a community is philosophical, the community itself is philosophical. In short, every community …

University of Richmond Law Review

On October 18, 1996, the Virginia State Bar Council (Council) approved a change in the format of the Code of Professional Responsibility (Code) from canons, disciplinary rules, and ethical considerations to the Model Rules of the American Bar Association (Model Rules). The first twenty-one rules, Model Rules 1.1 through 2.5, were approved in substance with some amendments at the Council's meeting on June 19, 1997. This approval represents approximately one-third of the conversion from the Code to the Model Rules. The second installment of the conversion was approved by Council at its October 1997 meeting. Notwithstanding Council's approval of this …
