Curricular Fidelity, Diversity With Connection: The Duquesne Experiment, Janie M. Harden Fritz
Curricular Fidelity, Diversity With Connection: The Duquesne Experiment, Janie M. Harden Fritz
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article presents information on a conceptual scheme detailing the functions of a communication curriculum applied at the University of Duquesne in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. From an organizational systems perspective the excellence of any academic department is shaped by its relationship to its field, its position and role with regard to the mission of the university setting that forms its particular context, and how it relates to the outside world-the community and larger society that it serves. The nature of the undergraduate curriculum is important not only for disciplinary maintenance but also because it concerns a primary enabling public of the …

Graduate Study In The Communication Discipline: An Extension Of 1994 Directory Data, Michael W. Shelton
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article provides information on the evaluation of communication education programs at the graduate level in the U.S. American society has become virtually obsessed with evaluation and analysis of its educational institutions and programs. Federal investigations have spotlighted a near crisis state in elementary and secondary education. Scholars and investigators within the communication discipline have devoted much effort to the appraisal of instructional programs, particularly at the graduate level. Specific graduate courses, such as argumentation theory have been examined. Specific programs of study, including mass communication have garnered attention. More generally, masters-level programs in speech communication have been evaluated. The …
Perceptions Of Quality In Journalism And Communications Education: A Delphi Study, Marian A. Smith
Perceptions Of Quality In Journalism And Communications Education: A Delphi Study, Marian A. Smith
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article provides information on a study on the perceptions of quality in journalism and communications education. In many academic disciplines, including communications, accreditation has been the ruling paradigm of quality assurance for many years. Accreditation standards often have been used to measure many characteristics of institutions, but such standards may not be capable of identifying and measuring the true quality of institutional excellence. The study gathered information from a selected group of participants about those characteristics students, faculty and practitioners consider to be necessary components of high quality programs. The study also examined whether the accreditation standards used for …

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article attempts to demonstrate how cognitive assessment may be used to empower both faculty and students by offering pedagogical and administrative strategies that enhance student learning in the U.S. The faculty limited its cognitive test, the Pre-Communication Assessment Measure to the four competencies--critical thinking, interpersonal, decision-making and theoretical competencies--common to two of five required courses. The components of the cognitive test are: critical thinking competence, interpersonal competence, decision-making competence and theoretical competence.
Providing Focus On Participatory Democracy In Academic Departments Of Communication, Timothy G. Hegstrom, Shawn Spano
Providing Focus On Participatory Democracy In Academic Departments Of Communication, Timothy G. Hegstrom, Shawn Spano
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article aims to illustrate how academic departments of communication can help contribute to a revitalized public sphere. Some of the projects to enhance participative democracy in order to show one direction in which the public sphere seems to be changing have been highlighted. Academic departments of speech communication can do much to accommodate this change by focusing more on the relationship between communication and democracy. This intention can be formally stated in university planning documents, course titles and outlines, general education guidelines, the establishment of research and consulting consortia, and in partnerships with external institutions. Benefits to the department …

Intracavity Gain And Absorption Dynamics Of Hybrid Modelocked Semiconductor Lasers Using Multiple Quantum Well Saturable Absorbers, S. Gee, R. Coffie, P. J. Delfyett, G. Alphonse, J. Connolly
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
Time resolved intracavity gain, saturable absorption dynamics, intracavity intensity pulse profiles, and their corresponding spectrograms, were measured in an external cavity hybrid mode-locked semiconductor diode laser. These measurements were performed to obtain fundamental information of the mode-locking dynamics and to determine their role in the pulse shaping and chirping dynamics. The results of these experiments show that the integrating nonlinearity associated with gain depletion, coupled with group velocity dispersion, leads to asymmetric intensity pulse profiles with predominantly cubic temporal phase, while saturable absorption coupled with group velocity dispersion tends to linearize the chirp. Exploitation of these dynamics may allow researchers …

Transfer Of Momentum And Torque From A Light Beam To A Liquid, A. Yu. Savchenko, N. V. Tabiryan, B. Ya. Zel'dovich
Transfer Of Momentum And Torque From A Light Beam To A Liquid, A. Yu. Savchenko, N. V. Tabiryan, B. Ya. Zel'dovich
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
Refraction or absorption of light results in the force and torque, i.e., transfer of momentum and angular momentum from light to the medium. In transversely inhomogeneous beams, the force per unit volume f may have curlf not equal 0 leading to flow or to nonthermal and nongravitational convection in liquids. The force and the torque in scattering systems are as strong as in absorbing materials and may allow one to carry out experiments avoiding thermal effects. Nonlinear optical response of liquid crystals due to this convection is discussed.
Dynamics Of Low-Dimensional Dipolar Systems, J. M. Sun, Weili Luo
Dynamics Of Low-Dimensional Dipolar Systems, J. M. Sun, Weili Luo
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
Time decays of low-dimensional magnetic dipoles with anisotropic energy barriers were studied theoretically. We found that the dynamic behaviors are interaction specific. For a chain with ferromagnetic coupling, a single mode dominates and the decay is essentially exponential. For antiferromagnetic coupling, the dynamics can be characterized by two distinct groups of time scales. The spectrum results in a plateau in the decay of remanent magnetization. This novel behavior differs from the prediction of the mean-field theory. For a two-dimensional rectangular lattice, a transition between the bimodal decay and a quasilogarithmic decay occurs when the ratio of length to width varies.

Attitudes Of Student Nurses Toward Domestic Violence, Phyllis Jean Messing
Attitudes Of Student Nurses Toward Domestic Violence, Phyllis Jean Messing
Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine if student nurses needed more education about domestic violence. Nurses, more than any other profession, are frequently in a position to identify and assist the victims of abuse. Presently, however, rather than addressing the hidden problem of family violence, nurses may inadvertently contribute to it, due to their lack of awareness and knowledge. Nurses, including student nurses, need to fine tune their knowledge in order to recognize the signs and symptoms surrounding family violence. Once identified, it will take an expanded level of awareness and enhanced skills to deal effectively with this …
Caring For Our Elders: An African-American Perspective, Wilma Virginia Saunders Schmitz

Intravenous To Oral Medication Streamlining Manual, Christina Cognata Smith
Theses
This thesis will examine intravenous to oral medication streamlining in hospitalized patients.
For multiple reasons the cost of healthcare has been rising over the past ten years. As a result of rapidly escalating expenditures, pharmacoeconomic strategies that center on reducing costs without adversely affecting patients' outcomes are commonplace throughout the pharmaceutical industry.
The literature demonstrates that the early transition from intravenous to oral medications is an opportunity to decrease hospital and patients' costs without compromising patients outcomes. It is important to note that an inappropriate or careless transition can result in a drastic increase in cost, therefor, patients should be …

Most of the Indian population has made a home in America; they are growing old here and are going to retire here. …
Internet Red Light Districts? Domain Name Proposal For Regulatory Zoning Of Obscene Content, April Mara Barton
Internet Red Light Districts? Domain Name Proposal For Regulatory Zoning Of Obscene Content, April Mara Barton
Law Faculty Publications
The Internet has a relatively short, yet rich history of free speech and independence from governance. While this independence is an important part of the Internet's past, it has become increasingly clear that the Internet must somehow be regulated in order to ensure stability to the Internet community and viability as a communications medium. Without regulation the Internet will eventually nullify its own legitimacy as an effective and reputable mode of communication. It is this negative effect which serves as the impetus for Internet governance that is proposed in this article.
