The Bermudian Creek Tories, James P. Myers Jr. Jan 1997

The Bermudian Creek Tories, James P. Myers Jr.

Adams County History

The history of the American Revolution which most Americans have learned and which is everyday reinforced in the public media is essentially but one of several competing interpretations of that conflict. We rarely think about this, so successfully has that particular history taken root in our culture. Common sense, however, should caution us that the British also possess a version or versions which differ in important ways from ours. The French, our allies during the Revolution, offer yet another construction, one stressing that war's place in their own long history of conflict with Great Britain. And had the northeastern American …

Perceptions Of Basic Communication Texts: Factors In Student Learning And Textbook Adoption Decisions, Donald D. Yoder, Robert A. Davilla

Basic Communication Course Annual

The purpose of this study is to assess existing pedagogical assumptions about basic communication course textbook features. Two separate surveys were administered to students (N= 1,379) and instructors (N= 118) in basic communication courses at 15 colleges and universities.

The findings of the study are twofold. First, students and teachers differ in their perceptions of usefulness of textbook pedagogical features. Second, students perceive basic course texts to be less difficult and less theoretical though more interesting, enjoyable, relevant, and practical than other introductory course texts. When making publication and text selection decisions, the findings help authors and teachers better choose …

ILSA Journal of International & Comparative Law

One of the legal issues left by recent territorial change in Eastern Europe is the status of persons of a former majority group who become a minority. Dismantling Desegregation, Joseph Watras

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Readers are asked to review recently published or classic books in education and research. In his review of Dismantling Desegregation, Watras acknowledges the authors’ contribution to the discussion of urban education but challenges their indirect approach to addressing abstract considerations under-lying the complex issue of racial integration in schools and communities.

Mapping Literacy Achievement: Results Of The 1996 National School English Literacy Survey: Incorporating A Report On The Survey Principles, Procedures And Findings, Geoff N. Masters, Margaret Forster

Monitoring Learning

The national school English literacy survey conducted in 1996 provides the most comprehensive picture yet developed of the literacy achievements of Year 3 and Year 5 students in Australian schools. The most significant finding of the survey is the wide range of literacy achievement among Australian children. The top ten per cent of students in each year are working about five year levels ahead of the bottom ten per cent. This range indicates the complexity of the teacher's task in providing appropriate learning opportunities for all students, and the need for schools to reflect on the implications of this range …

The Remoteness That Betrays Desire, Kenneth Anderson Jan 1997

The Remoteness That Betrays Desire, Kenneth Anderson

Book Reviews

This 1997 review in the Times Literary Supplement covered the then, as now, incendiary issue of the nude photography of children and adolescents. It reviewed photobooks by two leading photographers of children in the nude, Jock Sturges and David Hamilton. Sturges, an American, photographed mainly on nude beaches in France and Europe, often following the same families and children for years on end; he had been indicted on child pornography charges in the 1908s, although the jury took only a few minutes to find for him. Hamilton, British, has photographed in France and in various islands. The photography of child …

Giving Oral Expression "Free Rein": Implications For Diversity Of University Hate Speech Code, Tim A. Pilgrim Jan 1997

Giving Oral Expression "Free Rein": Implications For Diversity Of University Hate Speech Code, Tim A. Pilgrim

Ethnic Studies Review

This paper uses history, law, and First Amendment theory to examine the concepts of political correctness, free speech, and hate speech in a search for a solution of how best to deal with hate speech incidents that occur in the university campus community. The paper notes the American tendency toward tyranny of the majority as noted by Alexis de Tocqueville in the 1830s and then proceeds to examine the double-edged sword of free speech. By guaranteeing freedom of speech we promote the right to shout down ethnic and other minority groups; by providing penalties against those who use it to …
