“Sisters Of The Skillet”: Radio Homemakers In Shenandoah, Iowa, 1920-1960, Lori Lynn Rohlk Jan 1997

“Sisters Of The Skillet”: Radio Homemakers In Shenandoah, Iowa, 1920-1960, Lori Lynn Rohlk

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

Radio homemaking shows were the mainstay of two radio stations in small-town Shenandoah, Iowa. These stations were founded in the 1920s by competitive seed and nursery moguls Earl May and Henry Field to promote their businesses. Both saw the benefit of programming that catered to female listeners. The format, “radio homemaking,” consisted of informal talks by local homemakers - often broadcast out of their own kitchens – on everything from cooking to raising families. The radio homemakers were immensely popular, receiving as many as 700 letters a day. Listeners not only wrote, but visited Shenandoah in droves for formal events …

The Ebbs And Flows Of Gulf War Protests, Eric Swank Jan 1997

The Ebbs And Flows Of Gulf War Protests, Eric Swank

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Operation Desert Storm was not a "patriotic triumph" for many U.S. citizens. Numerous Americans silently disapproved of the war, while others defiantly created a movement of Gulf War dissenters. This reenactment of the antiwar movement will be the focus of this paper. More specifically, the paper will trace the inception, growth and decline of this oppositional movement. Methodologically, this paper studies the movement's ebbs and flows through a content analysis of newspapers and an ethnographic case study. In the end, this study reveals that the slow and steady growth of the movement during the last months of 1990 was surpassed …

Attachment Styles Of The Prison Population As Measured By The Attachment And Personality Dynamics Questionnaire, Kristy K. Fuller Jan 1997

Attachment Styles Of The Prison Population As Measured By The Attachment And Personality Dynamics Questionnaire, Kristy K. Fuller

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

100 criminals from a maximum security prison were given the Attachment and Personality Dynamics Questionnaire (APDQ) in order to profile them in terms of relationship functioning. Included in the APDQ were items that were specific to the subjects' crimes or potential crimes, as well as questions pertaining to alcoholism. The results showed that the APDQ did successfully differentiate between those of the criminal population and controls. Furthermore, two dimensions were revealed from the discriminant functional analyses. These were codependent partner, secure mother, ambivalent mother, and shame on the first dimension, and codependent partner, anger, secure mother, and shame on the …

Sacrificing Legislative Integrity At The Altar Of Appropriations Riders: A Constitutional Crisis, Sandi Zellmer Jan 1997

Sacrificing Legislative Integrity At The Altar Of Appropriations Riders: A Constitutional Crisis, Sandi Zellmer

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

The technique of appending substantive provisions to appropriations bills has become a favorite tool of the legislative trade in recent years. Congress has employed appropriations riders to dictate the outcome of public policy issues ranging from abortion to oil development in pristine wilderness areas. Riders have been used with particularly destructive effect to circumvent long-standing environmental policies, especially those involving the use of natural resources and public lands. In many cases, the policies affected were the result of decades of activity in Congress and in the courts, and retain broad public and legislative support. Appropriations riders have also allowed these …

Fredrick Brown:The Jazz Paintings, Daniel A. Siedell

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

I n addition to featuring a selection of recently completed paintings of jazz performers, Frederick Brown: The Jazz Paintings offers a broad cross section of the work of one of the most eclectic and aesthetically diverse African-American painters working today.

Born in Greensboro, Georgia in 1945 and reared in a working class neighborhood in Chicago, Frederick Brown graduated with a degree in painting from the University of Southern Illinois at Carbondale in 1968 and two years later, moved to New York, where he became intimately involved with a community of jazz musicians that included Ornette Coleman and Anthony Braxton. The Hergenrader Collection Of Contemporary Art, Daniel A. Siedell

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

The success of an art museum is often in proportion to the energy of its patrons who willingly commit themselves to its mission and who, by donating their time and resources, insure its continued success. The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden is no different. And the Sheldon Gallery not only has a local group of committed patrons and donors, but it also boasts an ever increasing number of patrons and donors across the nation who have, for many reasons, recognized the significance of the Sheldon Gallery's collection of American art and are willing to participate in its continued …

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

The tenth annual Sheldon Statewide exhibition, Trompe l'oeil: The Art of Deception, marks a decade in the uniquely successful partnership between the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden, our principal funding support group, the Nebraska Art Association, a nonprofit volunteer membership organization dedicated to the advancement of the visual arts in Nebraska, and twenty-two Nebraska communities that have served as exhibition venues in the past ten years. The Bermudian Creek Tories, James P. Myers Jr. Jan 1997

The Bermudian Creek Tories, James P. Myers Jr.

Adams County History

The history of the American Revolution which most Americans have learned and which is everyday reinforced in the public media is essentially but one of several competing interpretations of that conflict. We rarely think about this, so successfully has that particular history taken root in our culture. Common sense, however, should caution us that the British also possess a version or versions which differ in important ways from ours. The French, our allies during the Revolution, offer yet another construction, one stressing that war's place in their own long history of conflict with Great Britain. And had the northeastern American …

Perceptions Of Basic Communication Texts: Factors In Student Learning And Textbook Adoption Decisions, Donald D. Yoder, Robert A. Davilla Jan 1997

Perceptions Of Basic Communication Texts: Factors In Student Learning And Textbook Adoption Decisions, Donald D. Yoder, Robert A. Davilla

Basic Communication Course Annual

The purpose of this study is to assess existing pedagogical assumptions about basic communication course textbook features. Two separate surveys were administered to students (N= 1,379) and instructors (N= 118) in basic communication courses at 15 colleges and universities.

The findings of the study are twofold. First, students and teachers differ in their perceptions of usefulness of textbook pedagogical features. Second, students perceive basic course texts to be less difficult and less theoretical though more interesting, enjoyable, relevant, and practical than other introductory course texts. When making publication and text selection decisions, the findings help authors and teachers better choose …

A Defense Of Unilateral Or Multi-Lateral Intervention Where A Violation Of International Human Rights Law By A State Constitutes An Implied Waiver Of Sovereignty, Mitchell A. Meyers

ILSA Journal of International & Comparative Law

This paper seeks to defend United States intervention in states that violate international human rights law. To explain the modem framework behind the legal justifications for intervention, it is necessary to review the historical development of international human rights law, the concept of sovereignty, and the continuing conflict between the two principles.

Russian Minorities In The Newly Independent States, John Quigley Jan 1997

Russian Minorities In The Newly Independent States, John Quigley

ILSA Journal of International & Comparative Law

One of the legal issues left by recent territorial change in Eastern Europe is the status of persons of a former majority group who become a minority. This issue has presented particular difficulties where, the remaining population is of an ethnic group that formerly held a predominant role vis-d-vis an ethnic group that, as a result of the territorial change, has become a majority.
