The Regulation Of Glucose Transport In Cultured Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells By Angiotensin Ii And Glucose, Leslie Ann Quinn Jan 1997

The Regulation Of Glucose Transport In Cultured Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells By Angiotensin Ii And Glucose, Leslie Ann Quinn

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Glucose transport was assessed in vascular smooth muscle (VSM) cells by measuring the uptake of a radiolabeled non-metabolizable glucose analog, [3H]-2-deoxglucose. VSM cells, isolated from rat aortae by enzymatic digestion, were maintained in culture in Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium supplemented with 10% newborn calf serum at 37°C with 5% CO2 and air. Angiotensin II (AU) increased glucose transport by 84%. Significant stimulation occurred by two hours of exposure with the maximum effect being observed between six and eight hours. All effects were concentration dependent with a threshold response being detected at 0.1 nM. All-stimulated transport was blocked by an AU …

Macrophage Response To Polymethylmethacrylate Particles, Stephen M. Horowtiz Jan 1997

Macrophage Response To Polymethylmethacrylate Particles, Stephen M. Horowtiz

Cells and Materials

This paper reviews studies performed by this laboratory involving the macrophage response to implant particles. Through the development of a tissue culture model, we have studied the events which occur following macrophage phagocytosis of bone cement particles, the released mediators and cell interactions which may ultimately lead to bone resorption, and the inhibition of this process with the use of pharmaceutical agents. This is divided into the following sections: Histologic response of macrophages to cement particles I toxicity I and mediator release, the effects of particle size and composition on mediator release by macrophages, macrophage I osteoblast interactions, macrophage I …

Nusselt Number For Flow Perpendicular To Arrays Of Cylinders In The Limit Of Small Reynolds And Large Peclet Numbers, Ashok S. Sangani, Wei Wang Jan 1997

Nusselt Number For Flow Perpendicular To Arrays Of Cylinders In The Limit Of Small Reynolds And Large Peclet Numbers, Ashok S. Sangani, Wei Wang

Biomedical and Chemical Engineering - All Scholarship

The problem of determining the Nusselt number N, the nondimensional rate of heat or mass transfer, from an array of cylindrical particles to the surrounding fluid is examined in the limit of small Reynolds number Re and large Peclet number Pe. N in this limit can be determined from the details of flow in the immediate vicinity of the particles. These are determined accurately using a method of multipole expansions for both ordered and random arrays of cylinders. The results for N/Pe^1/3 are presented for the complete range of the area fraction of cylinders. The results of numerical simulations for …

Alterations In The Microbiota Of Nestling Tree Swallows And The Effects On Their Growth And Development, Natasha Brock Jan 1997

Alterations In The Microbiota Of Nestling Tree Swallows And The Effects On Their Growth And Development, Natasha Brock

McNair Scholars Journal

A subclinical dose of broad-spectrum antibiotics (Bactrim and Clavarnox) we re given to one-half of nestling Tree Swallow (Tacbycineta bicolor) brood s on nestling day (ND) 3 and 4 while the other half of the brood received a placebo. Cloacal swabs were taken on ND5 and D15 to monitor changes in the gastrointestinal microbial community. Physical measures to track growth and development of nestlings were taken on ND5, ND15, and ND19 . Bacterial counts were low on ND5 in both treated and untreated birds. By ND15 the only component of the microbial community that was altered was the number of …

Usable Pasts, Tad Tuleja

All USU Press Publications

In Usable Pasts, fourteen authors examine the manipulation of traditional expressions among a variety of groups from the United States and Canada: the development of a pictorial style by Navajo weavers in response to traders, Mexican American responses to the appropriation of traditional foods by Anglos, the expressive forms of communication that engender and sustain a sense of community in an African American women's social club and among elderly Yiddish folksingers in Miami Beach, the incorporation of mass media images into the "C&Ts" (customs and traditions) of a Boy Scout troop, the changing meaning of their defining Exodus-like migration to …

Generating Diagnostic Tools For Network Fault Management, Mihaela C. Sabin, Robert D. Russell, Eugene C. Freuder

Applied Engineering and Sciences Scholarship

Today’s network management applications mainly collect and display information, while providing limited information processing and problem-solving capabilities. A number of different knowledge-based approaches have been proposed to correct this deficiency, evolving from rule-based systems through case-based systems, to more recent model-based systems. Part of this evolution has been the recognition of the importance of constraints in a management context. This makes possible the assimilation into network management of a mature, theoretically developed technology from artificial intelligence, namely, the constraint satisfaction problem (CSP). In this paper we investigate the role of constraints in manipulating management data, and give an example of …

Verifying The Economic Impact Of Convention Attendees On The Local Economy In The Republic Of China On Taiwan, Pei-Ling Huang Jan 1997

Verifying The Economic Impact Of Convention Attendees On The Local Economy In The Republic Of China On Taiwan, Pei-Ling Huang

Theses

Convention travel has been growing rapidly throughout the world in recent years and becoming a critical component of the hospitality and travel industry. Hosting of conventions, especially international conventions, can be used by host countries as part of a strategic marketing plan to publicize modern development, traditional culture, and tourism resources. It also stimulates economic growth in the hosting country. The purpose of this study is to analyze the differences between the expenditures of delegates staying in hotels and delegates not staying in hotels in each category. It was expected that most of delegates staying in hotels were foreigners and …
