Special Collections and University Archives Legacy Finding Aids: All Items

In 1996, Dr. Raymond O. Arsenault donated the Harrison W. Fox Real Estate Collection to the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library. The collection contains the personal papers of Harrison W. Fox, a prominent and successful third-generation real estate developer in post-World War II St. Petersburg. Mr. Fox was a very active member of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), and an officer in both the Homebuilder's Association of Greater St. Petersburg (of which he was a charter member and the Association's first secretary) and the St. Petersburg Builder's and Contractor's Association. The bulk of the collection consists of documents of …

A Historical Study Of Payola: Advertising And Public Relations Or Bribery, Christina Guadagno Jun 1997

A Historical Study Of Payola: Advertising And Public Relations Or Bribery, Christina Guadagno

Theses and Dissertations

Payola helps get songs played on radio stations. Decades ago, it involved record company promoters giving cash, marijuana and other inducements to disc jockeys so they would add a new song to their playlist. The courts always found the disc jockey at fault.

Then in 1973, the courts began to go after the record companies. This caused the record companies to seek a middleman – independent promoters. Independent promoters helped record companies get songs added to the playlist so record companies did not have to deal with radio stations directly.

Some independent promoters gave large amounts of cash, harder drugs …

The Crisis In The Russian Economy, Vitaly V. Shlykov Dr. Jun 1997

The Crisis In The Russian Economy, Vitaly V. Shlykov Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Retired Soviet Army Colonel Vitaly Shlykov presents a brutally honest appraisal of the harsh realities that are a part of today's Russia. This report was presented at the Army War College's Eighth Annual Strategy Conference, "Russia's Future as a World Power," held at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, April 22-24, 1997. Colonel Shlykov's paper is even more sobering when one considers that the October Revolution of 1917 began in the bread lines of Petrograd and Moscow.

Overcoming Collective Action Problems: Enforcement Of Worker Rights, Louise Sadowsky Brock Jun 1997

Overcoming Collective Action Problems: Enforcement Of Worker Rights, Louise Sadowsky Brock

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

In a period of new employment laws, it is important to determine how those laws are enforced, why enforcement of those laws is sometimes limited and how enforcement can be improved. This Note discusses the ways in which the theory of collective action limits enforcement of three employee rights statutes: the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. Enforcement mechanisms such as class action lawsuits, administrative agencies, employee participation groups, and labor unions represent potential methods of overcoming collective action problems. Each method has its benefits, and the three …

Methods Of Digital Classification Accuracy Assessment, Jeffrey R. Allen Jun 1997

Methods Of Digital Classification Accuracy Assessment, Jeffrey R. Allen

Theses

Landcover classification of remotely sensed data has found many useful applications in industries such as forestry, agriculture, and defense. With the push toward end users, class maps are often incorporated directly into geographical information systems for use in solving large, complex problems. However, errors are inherent in the classification process. The importance of assessing the thematic accuracy of data derived from remote sensing platforms is universally recognized and has motivated much research. Classification accuracy assessment is often required to determine the "fitness of use" or suitability of a data set for a particular application. Failure to identify the magnitude of …

History, Mission, And Visitors At The Kalamazoo Valley Museum In Kalamazoo, Michigan: A Study Of The Museum As Cultural Practice, Lynnette Z. King Jun 1997

History, Mission, And Visitors At The Kalamazoo Valley Museum In Kalamazoo, Michigan: A Study Of The Museum As Cultural Practice, Lynnette Z. King

Masters Theses

This study investigates the interrelationship between the museum, its mission, and its visitors. The history of museums in general and the Kalamazoo Valley Museum in particular shows how the mission developed in relationship to culture, community, and individuals. Observations and ethnographic interviews of visitors and staff, as well as drawings made by school children who had visited the museum were used to identify viewers' perceptions of the museum and its mission. The museum is guided by an official stated mission as well as various staff and administrative interpretations of the mission. Although the museum and its mission have changed through …

Toward A Sociocultural Context For Understanding Violence And Disruption In Black Urban Schools And Communities, Linwood H. Cousins Jun 1997

Toward A Sociocultural Context For Understanding Violence And Disruption In Black Urban Schools And Communities, Linwood H. Cousins

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This article examines violence and disruption in a Black urban school and community. The author argues that an unempowering framework of culture has restricted our understanding of violence and other social issues affecting Black schools and communities. From such a backdrop, a sociocultural framework is presented that captures the strain, solidarity, and contemporary emergences that area part of school, American and Black culture, and a part of the context in which violence occurs in Black schools and communities. Broad implications are posited for human service policy, research, and direct practice.

Between A Rock And A Hard Place: The United States, Mexico, And The Agony Of National Security, Donald E. Schulz Dr. Jun 1997

Between A Rock And A Hard Place: The United States, Mexico, And The Agony Of National Security, Donald E. Schulz Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The North American Free Trade Association has accelerated its interdependence with the U.S. economy. At the same time, Mexico has been experiencing great political, economic, and social disruption, and has become the territory of origin or transit of most of the illegal drugs entering the United States. The growing interpenetration and interdependence of the two countries means that this turmoil is more likely than ever to spill over the border. Whether in the form of economic interaction, illegal immigration, or the spread of corruption and violence, what happens in Mexico increasingly affects our own national interests. By redefining U.S.-Mexican national …
