Introduction, Lothar Huber Jun 1997

Introduction, Lothar Huber

University of Dayton Review

The papers published here are from the London Böll Symposium, held 7-8 December 1995, to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the writer's death. These articles present new critical perspectives on a writer who is now generally accepted as one of the most important literary figures in Germany during the second half of the twentieth century. The contributions come mainly from Britain, but also from Germany, France and the U.S.A. One relatively neglected area of Böll scholarship receives particular attention here. This is a group of essays that treat Böll's contributions to radio and film and examine the work of a …

Sprachwiderstand': Critical Language Analysis In Böll's Writings Of The 1980s, Frank Finlay Jun 1997

Sprachwiderstand': Critical Language Analysis In Böll's Writings Of The 1980s, Frank Finlay

University of Dayton Review

Like so many of his contemporaries who experienced the historical calamity of the Third Reich, Heinrich Böll had ample opportunity to witness the physical and psychological coercion deployed by the National Socialists in establishing and maintaining their criminal regime. Moreover, as a writer, he possessed an acute understanding of the key ideological role which language played in manufacturing consent for Hitler's racist tyranny, not least via the insidious and all-embracing propaganda of the state-controlled media. It was the historical example of German fascism, therefore, which convinced Böll that ideology was pervasively present in language and that the written and spoken …

Symbolism And The Continuity Theory In Heinrich Böll's Novel Billard Um Halbzehn, Robert C. Conard Jun 1997

Symbolism And The Continuity Theory In Heinrich Böll's Novel Billard Um Halbzehn, Robert C. Conard

University of Dayton Review

Most problematic in reading Böll's Billiards is coming to terms with the novel's symbolism, its use of lambs and buffaloes to represent the oppressed and the oppressors of history. The prevailing criticism of these symbols is that they are simply "unconvincing" (W. J. Schwarz 37-38), are too "black and white," unable to deal with the complexity of the history of the periods presented (P.K. Kurz 26), inadequate to reveal the economic realities behind German militarism in the 20th century, suggest that the overpowering buffaloes are an evil beyond control (H. Haase 225), and according to H.J. Bernhard represent a rejection …

That Obscure Object Of Redemption Or 'Reality' In Two Adaptations Of Heinrich Böll., Richard Falcon Jun 1997

That Obscure Object Of Redemption Or 'Reality' In Two Adaptations Of Heinrich Böll., Richard Falcon

University of Dayton Review

The two adaptations I want to consider are: Jean Marie Straub and Danielle Huillet's Nicht versohnt oder Es hilft nur Gewalt wo Gewalt herrscht based on the 1958 novel Billard um halbzehn and released in 1966 and Volker Schlondortrs and Margarethe von Trotta's Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum oder Wie Gewalt entstehen und wohin sie führen kann, based on the Erzählung of the same name and released in 1975.

Heinrich Böll's Contribution To The Film Deutschland Im Herbst , Helen Hughes Jun 1997

Heinrich Böll's Contribution To The Film Deutschland Im Herbst , Helen Hughes

University of Dayton Review

There are two documents, both compilations, which are particularly valuable as primary source material for understanding and attempting to explain the cultural and political state of the Federal Republic of Germany during the 1970s. The first of these is Frank Grutzbach's collection of newspaper articles under the title Heinrich Böll: Freies Geleitjiir Ulrike Meinhoj: Ein Artikel und seine Folgen recording the livid response to Heinrich Böll's attempt in the Spiegel in January 1972 to redress the balance in the reporting on terrorist activities. The second is the film Deutschland im Herbst made in late 1977 and early 1978, and premiered …

Cellular Responses In Escherichia Coli To Lethal And Sublethal Doses Of Ozone, Indira Ruth Komanapalli Jun 1997

Cellular Responses In Escherichia Coli To Lethal And Sublethal Doses Of Ozone, Indira Ruth Komanapalli

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Ozone is a major component of photochemical smog. High levels of this pollutant, sufficient to affect human health are found in many urban areas worldwide. Though limited studies in humans are supported by extensive findings from animal experiments, a difficulty in interpreting the results of these experiments has lead to an ambiguity on the biochemical mechanism of ozone toxicity. To elucidate the mechanism by which ozone causes cell damage and eventual cell death we conducted a comprehensive study using Escherichia coli K-12 as a model.

Studies on the comparative inactivation of bacteriophage lambda (λ), Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans …

Little Golden Bookstm: An Analysis Of Every Child’S Literature, Sandra Ballman-Burke Jun 1997

Little Golden Bookstm: An Analysis Of Every Child’S Literature, Sandra Ballman-Burke

Masters Theses

Modeling theory proposes that consequences received by the model are considered critical in determining whether or not modeled behaviors will be imitated (Bandura, Ross & Ross, 1961).

Despite the apparent significance of consequences, analyses of children's literature have failed to explore this link. Utilizing feminist research perspectives, I sought to examine variables explored in previous analyses of picture books, with emphasis on consequences received by models. I was interested in (a) consequences received by female and male characters when engaged in instrumental/independent activities (Kortenhaus & Demarest, 1993); (b) the ways in which female and male characters are stereotyped; and (c) …

Each idea is explained in enough detail to give the reader the basic information needed to understand …

Critical Thinking And Cedaw: Women's Rights As Human Rights, Nancy L. Adams Jun 1997

Critical Thinking And Cedaw: Women's Rights As Human Rights, Nancy L. Adams

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

This thesis is designed as an exercise in critical thinking which attempts to trace the little-known and vaguely understood international effort to address women's rights as human rights. Specifically, it is intended to introduce and actively engage the reader in the application of critical thinking processes through an analysis of the history and status of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, or CEDAW. Given the potential significance of CEDAW for the United States, it is ironic that this human rights treaty is not commonplace in discussions regarding women's rights. Many associate the women's rights …

Development Of Design Guiding Principles For Constructivist-Based Distance Learning Environments, Mary C. Herring Jun 1997

Development Of Design Guiding Principles For Constructivist-Based Distance Learning Environments, Mary C. Herring

Curriculum & Instruction Faculty Publications

K-12 teachers are struggling to design effective learning environments that meet the future needs of their students.A number of individuals have suggested that a relatively new theory of learning, constructivism, supports visions of the 21st century, technology-rich, classrooms. The role of technology in the learning process has steadily in-creased as access has opened classrooms to the world providing teachers and students with expanding learning opportunities. The advent of increased access to world-linking technology has increased the use of distance education to enrich and expand the learning landscape for students. To support and facilitate teachers responses to these changes in their …

Modeling The Effect Of Ink Spread And Ink Penetration On Tone Reproduction, Michael Alber Jun 1997

Modeling The Effect Of Ink Spread And Ink Penetration On Tone Reproduction, Michael Alber

Theses

In ink jet printing when ink is printed on top of the paper, two effects occur that have an effect on the dot that is printed. One effect is that the ink spreads out laterally and the other is that the ink penetrates into the paper. A tone reproduction model was developed that mathematically modeled the effects ink spread and ink penetration have on tone reproduction. Since the optical behavior of ink penetration is very complex, the model only included characteristics that were expected to be significant. This model was built from the foundation of another tone reproduction model which …

Groundwater-Kalamazoo River Interaction Near The Parchment City Wellfield, Parchment, Michigan, W. Richard Laton Jun 1997

Groundwater-Kalamazoo River Interaction Near The Parchment City Wellfield, Parchment, Michigan, W. Richard Laton

Dissertations

A detailed hydrogeologic study of the Kalamazoo River and its interaction with the groundwater was completed near Parchment, Michigan. The Kalamazoo River between Portage Creek and Allegan Dam is a Federal superfund site due to PCB contamination trapped in its sediments. The City of Parchment pumps all of its drinking water from a glacial aquifer 850 feet from the Kalamazoo River. This study focused on the hydrogeology and groundwater/surface interaction of the area through the use of surface and downhole geophysics, installation of monitoring wells and peizometers, seepage meters and chemical sampling. It was determined that the Kalamazoo River is …
