Using Graphing Calculators To Integrate Mathematics And Science, J. Garofalo, F. Pullano Jan 1997

Using Graphing Calculators To Integrate Mathematics And Science, J. Garofalo, F. Pullano

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

The computational, graphing, statistical and programming capabilities of today’s graphing calculators make it possible for teachers and students to explore aspects of functions and investigate real-world situations in ways that were previously inaccessible because of computational constraints. Many of the features of graphing calculators can be used to integrate topics from mathematics and science. Here we provide a few illustrations of activities that use the graphing, parametric graphing, regression, and recursion features of graphing calculators to study mathematics in science contexts.

Operation And Control In A Competitive Market: Distributed Generation In A Restructured Industry, Judith Cardell, Richard Tabors Jan 1997

Operation And Control In A Competitive Market: Distributed Generation In A Restructured Industry, Judith Cardell, Richard Tabors

Engineering: Faculty Publications

The prospect of independent ownership for distributed technologies is being encouraged by the current deregulation of the industry, and it is possible that the new generators will be independently operated as well as independently owned. The siting of numerous small-scale generators in distribution feeders is likely to have an impact on the operations and control of the power system, a system designed to operate with large, central generating facilities. In response to the new and potentially conflicting economic and technical demands of a growing number of independent players, the power system may require new means for coordinating system operations. Price …

Utilizing The Ryder's And The Thigh-Foot Angle Tests To Establish Normal Values Of Femoral Anteversion And Tibiofibular Torsion In Children Aged 5 Through 10 Years, Timothy M. Dahlke, Wendi L. Jabs Jan 1997

Utilizing The Ryder's And The Thigh-Foot Angle Tests To Establish Normal Values Of Femoral Anteversion And Tibiofibular Torsion In Children Aged 5 Through 10 Years, Timothy M. Dahlke, Wendi L. Jabs

Masters Theses

The purpose of this research was to begin to establish normative data for femoral anteversion and tibiofibular torsion using the Ryder's and the Thigh-Foot Angle (TEA) tests. A secondary purpose was to establish the intertester and intratester reliability of the authors' measurements. Thirty-three normal children within the ages of 5 through 10 years volunteered for this study. All subjects' data were separated into the appropriate age groups. All data were pooled and mean/standard deviations and intertester/intratester reliability coefficients were determined. A small decreasing general trend in femoral anteversion with increasing age was found. However, no significant trend was noted in …

amount of computational power to researchers at an affordable cost, making it feasible to use workstations rather than expensive supercomputers to perform scientific analysis of large data sets, such as the Global Land 1-Km AVHRR data. In addition to this, inexpensive high speed ATM networks have the potential to improve the overall computational efficiency of workstations by using several workstations in a distributed environment. This research studies the practicality of using distributed workstations interconnected with a 155 Mb ATM network for analysis and compression of the Global Land 1-Km AVHRR data versus sequential computing on one of the workstations. Performance …

Synthesis For Testability By Two-Clock Control, Shashank K. Mehta, Sharad C. Seth, Kent L. Einspahr Jan 1997

Synthesis For Testability By Two-Clock Control, Shashank K. Mehta, Sharad C. Seth, Kent L. Einspahr

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

In previous studies clock control has been inserted after design to improve the testability of a sequential circuit. In this paper we propose a two-clock control scheme that is included as a part of the logic synthesis of a finite state machine (fsm). The scheme has low area overhead and competes well with scan methods in its ability to initialize and observe circuit states. The states of the machine are assigned a pair of binary values using a novel split coding system. The purpose of the encoding is to ease navigation between any pair of states using a combination of …

Minimizing The Number Of Optical Amplifiers Needed To Support A Multi-Wavelength Optical Lan/Man, Byrav Ramamurthy, Jason Iness, Biswanath Mukherjee Jan 1997

Minimizing The Number Of Optical Amplifiers Needed To Support A Multi-Wavelength Optical Lan/Man, Byrav Ramamurthy, Jason Iness, Biswanath Mukherjee

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Optical networks based on passive star couplers and employing wavelength-division multiplexing (WDhf) have been proposed for deployment in local and metropolitan areas. Amplifiers are required in such networks to compensate for the power losses due to splitting and attenuation. However, an optical amplifier has constraints on the maximum gain and the maximum output power it can supply; thus optical amplifier placement becomes a challenging problem. The general problem of minimizing the total amplifier count, subject to the device constraints, is a mixed-integer non-linear problem. Previous studies have attacked the amplifier placement problem by adding the “artificial” constraint that all wavelengths, …

Relations Between Directional Spectral Vegetation Indices And Leaf Area And Absorbed Radiation In Alfalfa, Elizabeth Walter-Shea, Jeffrey L. Privette, D. Cornell, Mark A. Mesarch, C. Hays

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

s ensors on satellite platforms with extreme view angles have been increasingly used to analyze regional and global vegetation cover and productivity because of frequent observations. This study, using experimental and theoretical methods, analyzed variations in vegetation indices with sun-view geometry as a means of understanding the sensitivity of relations beween vegetation indices and the biophysical properties, the leaf area index (LAI), and the instantaneous fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (fAPAR). Canopy bidirectional reflectance factors (BRFs) of an alfalfa crop were measured and simulated at a variety of solar and view zenith angles. Also, fAPAR, LAI, and leaf optical …

An Aggregation Procedure For Simulating Manufacturing Flow Line Models, Paul Savory, Gerald Mackulak Jan 1997

An Aggregation Procedure For Simulating Manufacturing Flow Line Models, Paul Savory, Gerald Mackulak

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

We develop a formal method for specifying an aggregate discrete-event simulation model of a production flow line manufacturing system. The methodology operates by aggregating production stations or resources of a flow line. Determining the specifications for representing the aggregated resources in a simulation model is the focus of our presentation. We test the methodology for a set of flow lines with exponentially distributed arrival and service times. Comparisons between analytical and simulation results indicate the aggregation approach is quite accurate for estimating average part cycle time.

Estimation Of Surface Snow Properties Using Combined Millimeter-Wave Backscatter And Near-Infrared Reflectance Measurements, Ram M. Narayanan, Sandy R. Jackson Jan 1997

Estimation Of Surface Snow Properties Using Combined Millimeter-Wave Backscatter And Near-Infrared Reflectance Measurements, Ram M. Narayanan, Sandy R. Jackson

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Knowledge of surficial snow properties such as grain size, surface roughness, and free-water content provides clues to the metamorphic state of snow on the ground, which in turn yields information on weathering processes and climatic activity. Remote sensing techniques using combined concurrent measurements of near-infrared passive reflectance and millimeter-wave radar backscatter show promise in estimating the above snow parameters. Near-infrared reflectance is strongly dependent on snow grain size and free-water content, while millimeter-wave backscatter is primarily dependent on free-water content and, to some extent, on the surface roughness. A neural-network based inversion algorithm has been developed that optimally combines near-infrared …

A Meta-Analysis Of The Effects Of Organizational Behavior Modification On Task Performance, 1975-95, Alexander D. Stajkovic, Fred Luthans Jan 1997

A Meta-Analysis Of The Effects Of Organizational Behavior Modification On Task Performance, 1975-95, Alexander D. Stajkovic, Fred Luthans

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Results of a primary meta-analysis indicated a significant main effect of the organizational behavior modification (O.B. Mod.) approach on task performance (d. = .51; a 17 percent increase) and a significant treatment-by-study interaction. To account for within-group heterogeneity of effect sizes, we conducted a two-level theory-driven moderator analysis by partitioning the sample of studies first into manufacturing and service groups and then into seven classes of reinforcement interventions. Results indicated a stronger average effect of O.B. Mod. in manufacturing organizations, moderation by the type of contingent interventions, and "pairwise" differences among average effect sizes in both organizational types. The practical …

Convolution And Fourier-Feynman Transforms, Chull Park, David Skough Jan 1997

Convolution And Fourier-Feynman Transforms, Chull Park, David Skough

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

In this paper, for a class of funtionals on Wiener space of the form F(x) = exp{∫T0 f(t, x(t)) dt}, we show that the Fourier-Feynman transform of the convolution product is a product of Fourier-Feynman transforms. This allows us to compute the transform of the convolution product without computing the convolution product.

Comparison Of Three Formulations Of Alphachloralose For Immobilization Of Canada Geese, Jerrold L. Belant, Thomas W. Seamans Jan 1997

Comparison Of Three Formulations Of Alphachloralose For Immobilization Of Canada Geese, Jerrold L. Belant, Thomas W. Seamans

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The effectiveness of an alpha-chloralose (AC)-corn oil suspension, an AC-margarine mixture, and AC tablets were compared for immobilizing Canada geese (Branta canadensis). Responses to AC immobilization also were compared in male and female Canada geese. There was no difference in mean time to first effects or mean time to capture between male and female geese dosed with 30 mg/kg AC in orally-administered bread baits. Recovery times (≤24 hr) also were similar between sexes. Mean (±SE) time to first effects for geese immobilized with AC tablets in bread baits ( 19 ± 3 mm) was significantly less than mean …

Herbicides And Their Metabolites In Rainfall: Origin, Transport, And Deposition Patterns Across The Midwestern And Northeastern United States, 1990-1991, Donald Goolsby, E. Michael Thurman, Michael Pomes, Michael Meyer, William Battaglin Jan 1997

Herbicides And Their Metabolites In Rainfall: Origin, Transport, And Deposition Patterns Across The Midwestern And Northeastern United States, 1990-1991, Donald Goolsby, E. Michael Thurman, Michael Pomes, Michael Meyer, William Battaglin

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Herbicides were detected in rainfall throughout the midwestern and northeastern United States during late spring and summer of 1990 and 1991. Herbicide concentrations exhibited distinct geographic and seasonal patterns. The highest concentrations occurred in midwestern cornbelt states following herbicide application to cropland. Volume-weighted concentrations of 0.2-0.4 μg/L for atrazine and alachlor were typical in this area during mid-April through mid-July, and weighted concentrations as large as 0.6- 0.9 μg/L occurred at several sites. Concentrations of 1-3 μg/L were measured in a few individual samples. Atrazine was detected most often followed by alachlor, deethylatrazine, metolachlor, cyanazine, and deisopropylatrazine. The high ratio …

Solid-Phase Extraction Method For The Quantitative Analysis Of Organochlorine Pesticides In Wildlife Urine, E. E. Petty, J . J . Johnston, S.A. Volz Jan 1997

Solid-Phase Extraction Method For The Quantitative Analysis Of Organochlorine Pesticides In Wildlife Urine, E. E. Petty, J . J . Johnston, S.A. Volz

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

A gas chromatographic method for the analysis of nine organochlorine pesticides in wildlife urine is described. Reversedphase solid-phase extraction is utilized to extract the organochlorine pesticides from urine. The pesticides are recovered by elution with hexane-ethyl ether (1:1) and quantified by gas chromatography with electron-capture detection. Method detection limits range from 1.4 to 2.7 μg/L. Mean recoveries for all pesticides are 90.6%.

Optimization Of Sulfur Dioxide And Lactic Acid Steeping Concentrations For Wet-Milling Of Grain Sorghum, R. A. Buffo, Curtis L. Weller, A. M. Parkhurst Jan 1997

Optimization Of Sulfur Dioxide And Lactic Acid Steeping Concentrations For Wet-Milling Of Grain Sorghum, R. A. Buffo, Curtis L. Weller, A. M. Parkhurst

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Influence of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and lactic acid (LA) on grain sorghum steeping efficiency in terms of wet-milling characteristics was investigated using response surface analysis. Tested ranges of concentrations in steeping water were 0.050 to 0.278% and 0 to 0.282% for SO2 and LA, respectively. Measured wet-milling variables were steeping solids yield, starch yield, protein yield, fiber/germ yield, starch recovery, protein recovery and protein content of starch. Starch and protein recovery values were highly correlated to each other (r = 0.74). Correlations of these attributes with fiber/germ yield were strongly negative (r = –0.96 and r = …

Oscillator strength spectra in the region of B 1s and C 1s excitation of three isomeric carborane cage compounds [closo-1,2-orthocarborane, closo-1,7-metacarborane, closo-1,12-paracarborane (C2B10H12)] have been derived from inner-shell electron energy loss spectra (ISEELS) recorded under electric dipole-scattering conditions. Total ion yield spectra recorded at high resolution with synchrotron radiation are also reported. The spectral features are assigned on the basis of comparisons with spectral predictions derived from the results of ab initio and semiempirical (extended Hückel) molecular orbital calculations. The isomeric and core level variations in the discrete core excitations …

The Synthetic A Priori Proposition Of Kant's Ethical Philosophy, Nelson T. Potter Jr. Jan 1997

The Synthetic A Priori Proposition Of Kant's Ethical Philosophy, Nelson T. Potter Jr.

Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications

I will consider Kant's claim that the categorical imperative (CI) is a synthetic a priori proposition. We know from the first Critique that such propositions are likely to be very important, but also difficult to justify. Kant says exactly the same things about the CI in the Grundlegung: the CI is difficult to justify2, but if we do not succeed in justifying it, morality may be a mere "phantom of the brain.',3 Though little has been written on this topic, a correct understanding of this claim is important to understanding Kant's views.
