Book Review - Lost Landscapes And Failed Economies, Tom Vetter Jan 1997

Book Review - Lost Landscapes And Failed Economies, Tom Vetter

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

In an intensive and methodical manner, Power casts doubt upon notions of environmental protection choking economic development. He demonstrates the fallacy of such a position and successfully advocates environmental protection as economically sound. The confusion that exists between the environment and the economy is largely the result of misguided convention.

Nesting Status Of The Cooper's Hawk In Iowa: 1988-1996, David. J. Conrads Jan 1997

Nesting Status Of The Cooper's Hawk In Iowa: 1988-1996, David. J. Conrads

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The Cooper's Hawk was once considered a common nesting species in Iowa. Organochlorine pesticides and their residues, along with habitat loss contributed to its decline throughout the Midwest after the 1940's. This species was classified as endangered in Iowa in 1984, but recent trends in nests found indicate that the population of these hawks has increased. Since April 1988, 53 nests have been discovered in Iowa. Due to the apparent population growth, this species was removed from Iowa's endangered species list in 1994.

Runoff Quality Responses To Cattle-Gazing Strategy And Grassed Buffer Zone Length, Dwayne R. Edwards, Brian T. Larsen, Teng T. Lim Jan 1997

Runoff Quality Responses To Cattle-Gazing Strategy And Grassed Buffer Zone Length, Dwayne R. Edwards, Brian T. Larsen, Teng T. Lim

KWRRI Research Reports

Grazed pastures represent a source of potential nonpoint pollution. In comparison to other nonpoint sources (e.g., row-cropped lands), relatively little information exists regarding possible magnitudes of pollution from grazed pasture; how that pollution is affected by weather, soil, management and other variables; and how the pollution can be minimized. The objective of this study was to assess how the quality of runoff from simulated grazed pasture is influenced by grazing duration (4-12 weeks), grazing strategy (no grazing, conventional grazing and rotational grazing), and by the use of grassed buffer strips (ranging in length from O to 18.3 m) installed down-slope …

Analysis Of Glasses Present In Quartz And Apatite Phenocrysts From Ordovician K-Bentonites In The Mohawk Valley, Ny, Stefanie Dannenmann Jan 1997

Analysis Of Glasses Present In Quartz And Apatite Phenocrysts From Ordovician K-Bentonites In The Mohawk Valley, Ny, Stefanie Dannenmann

Geology Theses and Dissertations

More than 20 bentonites occur in the Middle Ordovician black shales of the Utica Formation that outcrop along tributaries to the Mohawk River in New York State. Pristine melt inclusions within quartz and apatite phenocrysts are commonly found in at least 40% of the bentonites. Constraints on magmatic processes can be obtained by examining the major-, minor- and trace-element variations among different melt inclusions in quartz and apatite phenocrysts from individual bentonites. The melt inclusions in apatite range in composition from rhyodacitic to rhyolitic, while those in quartz are high-silica rhyolites. Most bentonites within the Middle Ordovician sequence in New …

Pre-Thrust Normal Faults And Post-Tectonic Micas In The Taconic Range Of West-Central Vermont, Nicholas W. Hayman Jan 1997

Pre-Thrust Normal Faults And Post-Tectonic Micas In The Taconic Range Of West-Central Vermont, Nicholas W. Hayman

Geology Theses and Dissertations

New geologic maps show that the Champlain Thrust System traces continuously between Shoreham and Benson, Vermont. The Champlain Thrust System consists of at least three internally imbricated thrust slices in continental shelf facies quartzites and carbonates. From north to south there is a structurally controlled thinning of the Champlain Thrust System, and a climbing in stratigraphic level by the thrusts. Within the Champlain Thrust System are a set of across-strike structures which create offsets in the thrusts and the surrounding lithic map unit boundaries. These structures function as lateral ramps in the thrust system geometry and bound thrust duplexes. Often …

Synthesis Of An Organophosphorus Analog Of Acetylcholine, Darshan Mehta '97 Jan 1997

Synthesis Of An Organophosphorus Analog Of Acetylcholine, Darshan Mehta '97

Honors Projects

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is an important enzyme in our nervous system In normal nerve function, AChE catalyzes the hydrolysis of acetylcholine (ACh) into its respective components, choline and acetate. Recent interest has been focused on AChE because of its potential role in the pathology of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Studies have revealed that the active site of AChE contains an esteratic and several hydrophobic/anionic subsites. AChE is inhibited by organophosphorus (OP) compounds like sarin and soman. As a result, OP compounds have been used to study the structure of AChE and the mechanism by which it catalyzes the hydrolysis …

Mapping Robotic Movement To A Three-Dimensional Coordinate System, Craig A. Materick '97

Honors Projects

The Illinois Wesleyan Intelligence Network on Knowledge (I.W.I.N.K.) is a project to design and implement an artificial"person'" named Shelley. Robotics, networking, and artificial intelligence will be the main topics ofthe preliminary work. For my research honors project I designed the three-dimensional coordinate system in which the robotic arms move and interact with objects. The anns we have constructed are based on an arrangement of six servos, each of which rotate approximately 185 degrees. The program takes in data about the location of an object in three-dimensional coordinates and moves each of the six motors in the ann to arrive at …

Minding The Mental: Intentionality, Consciousness, And Daniel Dennett In Contemporary Philosophy Of Mind, Matthew T. Dusek '97 Jan 1997

Minding The Mental: Intentionality, Consciousness, And Daniel Dennett In Contemporary Philosophy Of Mind, Matthew T. Dusek '97

Honors Projects

The mind. Sanctum sanctorum of subjectivity. Soundstage of the mental. Consciousness' cockpit. Romping-grounds of the intentional. A great deal, it would seem, rides on the notion of mind. It's not just that naughty children never do, or that people when irritated often claim to have half-a-one. Though perhaps telling in other ways, it isn't so important that while we all think we lose ours from time to time, we rarely-if ever-doubt that we had one to begin with. Solipsists are perfectly willing to doubt that anyone else actually possesses one, but no one suspects that everyone but herself has one. …

Documents

Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is an educational approach that organizes curriculum and instruction around "ill structured" problems. Students gather and apply knowledge from multiple disciplines in their quest for solutions. Guided by teachers trained as cognitive coaches, students:

  • develop critical thinking skills
  • use problem solving skills
  • practice collaborative skills
  • formulate hypotheses
  • conduct data searches
  • perform experiments
  • generate solutions
  • determine the best solution

Problem-based learning (PBL) is an educational approach that organizes curriculum and instruction around carefully crafted "ill-structured" problems. Students gather and apply knowledge From multiple disciplines in their quest for solutions. Guided by teachers acting as cognitive coaches, they develop critical thinking, problem solving, and collaborative skills as they identify problems, formulate hypotheses, conduct data searches, perform experiments, formulate solutions and determine the best "fit" of solutions to the conditions of the problem. Problem-based learning enables students to embrace complexity, find relevance and joy in learning, and enhance their capacity for creative and responsible real-world problem-solving.

Vegetative Filter Strip Removal Of Metals In Runoff From Poultry Litter-Amended Fescuegrass Plots, Dwayne R. Edwards, P. A. Moore Jr., Tommy C. Daniel, Puneet Srivastava, D. J. Nichols Jan 1997

Vegetative Filter Strip Removal Of Metals In Runoff From Poultry Litter-Amended Fescuegrass Plots, Dwayne R. Edwards, P. A. Moore Jr., Tommy C. Daniel, Puneet Srivastava, D. J. Nichols

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Runoff from land areas amended with poultry (Gallus gallus domesticus) manure can contain elevated concentrations of metals such as Cu, Fe, and Zn. Vegetative filter strips (VFS) can reduce runoff concentrations of animal manure components, but reported studies have typically focused on nutrients and solids rather than metals. This experiment assessed the impact of VFS length (0 to 12 m) on concentrations and mass losses of Cu, Fe, K, Na, Ni, and Zn in runoff from fescuegrass (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) plots (1.5 m wide × 6 and 12 m long) treated with poultry litter. The runoff was produced from simulated …

The Administrative Efficiency Of Hospitals And The Effect Of Electronic Data Interchange: A Critical Evaluation Of The Stochastic Frontier And The Data Envelopment Analysis Models To Efficiency Measurement, Dimitrios N. Tsaprounis

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The investigation and measurement of administrative efficiency is an issue of great concern for health care policy decision makers and has important implications for the efficiency of the overall health care sector itself as well as for the cost containment efforts and the restructuring of the health care system.

The administrative cost efficiency of the United States health care system has received much attention during the last years, and has been under continuous criticism since it became widely known that the country's administrative costs are higher than those of any other country in the world.

As criticism on administrative inefficiency …
