Higher Education

Progressive teacher educators face a pair of daunting yet crucial tasks. New teachers must be prepared to function successfully in schools as they exist today and also be educated to take a leadership role in the improvement and reculturing of K-12 education to more fully meet the needs of individual students and resolve societal problems. One approach that can address both these tasks is the integration of service-learning experiences into teacher preparation programs.

Middle Holocene Aeolian Activity On The High Plains Of West-Central Kansas, C. G. Olsen, W. D. Nettleton, D. A. Porter, B. R. Brasher Jan 1997

Middle Holocene Aeolian Activity On The High Plains Of West-Central Kansas, C. G. Olsen, W. D. Nettleton, D. A. Porter, B. R. Brasher

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The uppermost surficial stratigraphic unit south of the Arkansas River in the Kansas High Plains is a previously unidentified middle Holocene or younger loess. The unit fits both a loess-thickness and a particlesize model for loess distribution with increasing distance from source. A soil immediately below this unit is radiocarbon dated 6000 to 6700 years BP. The radiocarbon ages indicate that the loess unit is younger than the commonly reported ranges for Bignell Loess in the Great Plains and demonstrate a need for re-examining Holocene loess stratigraphy of the Great Plains. In some locations closest to the Arkansas valley source, …

Construction Of Gold Micro-Bead Ultramicroelectrodes, Deon T. Miles, Andrew Knedlik, David O. Wipf Jan 1997

Construction Of Gold Micro-Bead Ultramicroelectrodes, Deon T. Miles, Andrew Knedlik, David O. Wipf

CAS Publications

A new way to construct small electrodes by the use of metal micro-beads is described. Gold beads of 1.5 to 3.0 mm diameter were used to construct inexpensive and disposable microelectrodes with overall structural diameters of £ 6 mm and electrode diameters of £ 5 mm. The voltammetric response of these electrodes is consistent with existing theory and the electrodes exhibited the sigmoidal waves expected at ultramicroelectrodes.

Chemistry And Environmental Implications Of Thio-Red And 2,4,6-Trimercaptotriazine Compounds, Kevin R. Henke Jan 1997

Chemistry And Environmental Implications Of Thio-Red And 2,4,6-Trimercaptotriazine Compounds, Kevin R. Henke

Theses and Dissertations

Many compounds, including Thio-Red® and 2,4,6-trimercaptotriazine, trisodium salt (TMT-55), have been marketed to precipitate mercury and other heavy metals from water, including contaminated ground waters. For the products to be effective, information is needed on the chemistry of the products, how they precipitate metals from aqueous solutions, and the chemistries and stabilities of the precipitates.

CS32-, HS-, and S2- are the dominant sulfur species in Thio-Red®. They precipitate heavy metals from water as sulfides (e.g., HgS, PbS, and ZnS). Thio-Red® also contains traces of poisonous carbon disulfide (CS2). Additional CS2 could form from reactions between dissolved heavy metals and CS32-. …

Crime Control And Harassment Of The Innocent, Raymond Dacey, Kenneth S. Gallant Jan 1997

Crime Control And Harassment Of The Innocent, Raymond Dacey, Kenneth S. Gallant

Law Faculty Scholarship

Crime control through law enforcement is generally considered to be a two-part process of apprehending and incapacitating or rehabilitating the guilty, and deterring the innocent from crime by the threat of punishment. The analysis presented here shows that the protection of the innocent from harassment-detention, arrest, punishment, and other intrusions by the criminal justice system-is important in deterring crime. Specifically, the analysis shows that deterrence from crime is weakened and then lost for a rational individual who holds the majority attitude toward risk, if the levels of rightful punishment and wrongful harassment are increased, as in a war on crime, …

Cyclic Permutations In Doubly-Transitive Groups, John P. Mcsorley Jan 1997

Cyclic Permutations In Doubly-Transitive Groups, John P. Mcsorley

Articles and Preprints

Let Ω be a finite set of size n. A cyclic permutation on Ω is a permutation whose cycle decomposition is one cycle of length n. This paper classifies all finite doubly-transitive permutation groups which contain a cyclic permutation. The classification appears in Table 1.

We use (G, Ω) for a finite doubly-transitive permutation group G acting on a finite set Ω. For other notation and definitions see the self-contained article Cameron [1].

An Invariant Of Basic Sets Of Smale Flows, Michael C. Sullivan

Articles and Preprints

We consider one-dimensional flows which arise as hyperbolic invariant sets of a smooth flow on a manifold. Included in our data is the twisting in the local stable and unstable manifolds. A topological invariant sensitive to this twisting is obtained.

Distributed Detection With Multiple Sensors: Part I—Fundamentals, Ramanarayanan Viswanathan, Pramod K. Varshney Jan 1997

Distributed Detection With Multiple Sensors: Part I—Fundamentals, Ramanarayanan Viswanathan, Pramod K. Varshney

Articles

In this paper, basic results on distributed detection are reviewed. In particular, we consider the parallel and the serial architectures in some detail and discuss the decision rules obtained from their optimization based on the Neyman–Pearson (NP) criterion and the Bayes formulation. For conditionally independent sensor observations, the optimality of the likelihood ratio test (LRT) at the sensors is established. General comments on several important issues are made including the computational complexity of obtaining the optimal solutions, the design of detection networks with more general topologies, and applications to different areas.

The purpose of this study was to use an investigator-made cue word list to increase low word recognition skills among college students while creating slides for a university curriculum using a simple presentation tool. The investigator randomly divided fourteen subjects into two groups. One group received the treatment and the other did not. Subjects received fifty minutes to complete a five-slide presentation. The investigator used four different data collection processes for data collection. Beyond this, the investigator presented the results using rank correlation. Results from this study indicated that …

Real Time 3-D Video Moire Inspection System With Enhanced Depth Resolution, Donald W.W. Dawson, Chris L. Hart, Bernard R. Gilbert, Gary L. Wallace, Joel H. Blatt Jan 1997

Real Time 3-D Video Moire Inspection System With Enhanced Depth Resolution, Donald W.W. Dawson, Chris L. Hart, Bernard R. Gilbert, Gary L. Wallace, Joel H. Blatt

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

A variable resolution video machine vision systems has been built which generates twice the number of depth contours for a given grating spacing as a conventional moiré system. This variable resolution system uses a Mach-Zender interferometer to project interference fringes onto a reference surface and onto a target surface. Video images of the two structurally illuminated surfaces are mixed in a video mixer with the resulting output being moiré contours which are the intersections of the two surfaces. If the reference surface is a flat plate, we get equal depth contours of the target surface, and if the reference surface …

Design Considerations For A Small Ultraviolet-Visible Space Telescope For Amateur And Professional Use, Donald Platt Jan 1997

Design Considerations For A Small Ultraviolet-Visible Space Telescope For Amateur And Professional Use, Donald Platt

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

Presented is a preliminary design for a small ultraviolet- visible (uv-vis) sensitive space telescope. Included will be optical, sensor, and spacecraft subsystem design considerations. With recent advances in charge coupled device (CCD) technology it is now possible to build a space telescope system with wavelength sensitivity from 200 to 1000 nm. A main objective of this design is to keep costs to a minimum and use commercial off the shelf (COTS) components wherever possible. Such a low-cost system could provide a platform for studying such untested techniques as small space-based optical interferometry. The observatory could be open to a guest …

Analysis Of Scanning Tunneling Optical Spectroscopy Applied To Narrow Gap Semiconductors, James D. Patterson, James G. Mantovani Jan 1997

Analysis Of Scanning Tunneling Optical Spectroscopy Applied To Narrow Gap Semiconductors, James D. Patterson, James G. Mantovani

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

Homogeneous II-VI narrow gap semiconducting alloys are of interest because of their use in infrared detectors. These compound semiconductor materials are inherently difficult to grow in bulk due to gravity induced convective flows. A microgravity growth environment has therefore been considered. In order to evaluate the quality of crystals grown in space compared to those grown on the ground, it is necessary to characterize both. One important aspect of this characterization is the study of stoichiometry, x. A characterization scheme using scanning tunneling optical spectroscopy (STOS) involves determining the spectral response of the photoexcited tunneling current for a semiconductor. By …

Prediction Of Firing Pin Shape And 3d Matching Of Shells And Firing Pins Based On Firing Pin Impressions In Primers, Donald W. Dawson, Chris Hart, Bernard S. Gilbert Iii, Rafael A. Andrade, Joel H. Blatt Jan 1997

Prediction Of Firing Pin Shape And 3d Matching Of Shells And Firing Pins Based On Firing Pin Impressions In Primers, Donald W. Dawson, Chris Hart, Bernard S. Gilbert Iii, Rafael A. Andrade, Joel H. Blatt

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

A variable resolution video machine vision system has been built which will determine the 3-D shape of a firing pin from the dent it has made in the primer of a shell. The system can also compare primer dents in different shells and determine if a 3-D match exists. A real time optical 3-D shape recognition feature allows the operator to align the shells, determine if there is a match, and quantify the quality of the 3-D match. The system uses a laser interferometer to project variable spatial frequency structural illumination on the shells which are viewed by video cameras. …

The All Encompassing Role And Function Of The Computing Coordinator In Western Australian Government Senior High Schools, Diana C. Brown

Theses : Honours

The purpose of this study was to determine the role and support afforded Computing Coordinators at Western Australian government senior high schools by undertaking a census survey. Previous studies performed by Weber and Kershaw (1990) and Kershaw and Weber {1991), portrayed the role of Computing Coordinators at Australian high schools as demanding a diversity of knowledge and skills in computer technology together with excellent management qualities. The literature also suggested that time management skills were a major factor in how effectively coordinators carried out the myriad of tasks expected of them. This study found that most Computing Coordinators considered their …
