Conservative Motion Of A Discrete, Nonsymmetric, Hexahedral Gyroscope, Donald Greenspan
Conservative Motion Of A Discrete, Nonsymmetric, Hexahedral Gyroscope, Donald Greenspan
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
Gyroscopic motion is simulated by applying a molecular dynamics formulation to a rigid hexahedron. The conservative dynamical differential equations are solved numerically in such a fashion that all the system invariants are preserved. The difficult problem of nonsymmetry is emphasized. Examples of the complex motions which result are described and discussed.
A Molecular Mechanics Type Approach To Turbulence, Donald Greenspan
A Molecular Mechanics Type Approach To Turbulence, Donald Greenspan
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
A molecular mechanics type formulation is applied to the cavity problem to generate primary vortices, secondary vortices, and turbulent flow. The fluid considered is water. Turbulence is defined in terms of the absence of a primary vortex and the rapid appearance and disappearance of many small vortices. The mechanism for generating turbulent flow lies in the generation of large repulsive forces between the particles of the model. This results from the increase in particle speeds due to the increase in wall speed.
Controlling Curvature In The Minkowski Plane, Mostafa Ghandehari
Controlling Curvature In The Minkowski Plane, Mostafa Ghandehari
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
Pontryagin's maximum principle is used to find the curve of shortest length with bounded Minkowskian curvature passing through two points with given initial and terminal tangents.

Gis Linkage With Hydrologic Models: Application To The North Fork Of The Kentucky River (With Geo-Spatial Data Needs And Sources), T. Stumbur, L. Ormsbee
KWRRI Research Reports
This report focuses on links between GIS and hydrologic models and geo-spatial data needs and sources. The use and calibration of the hydrologic models reviewed in this paper are addressed by another report (see Bischoff, Yost, Ormsbee 1997.)
Part 1 of this report explains the general principles of a GIS database. It gives an overview of the Arc/Info and ArcView data models by providing a brief description of each spatial data format and explaining how spatial and tabular data are linked in a GIS environment. Part 1 also addresses the data compatibility issues related to projection, scale and resolution of …

The Effect Of Varying Temperature, Flux And Pretreatment On The Microfiltration Of Lake Michigan Water, Karen Linda Kopp
The Effect Of Varying Temperature, Flux And Pretreatment On The Microfiltration Of Lake Michigan Water, Karen Linda Kopp
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated microfiltration of Lake Michigan Water for the production of drinking water. A 60 gpm Memcor microfiltration pilot plant was operated for nine months at Manitowoc, Wisconsin to determine and model the performance characteristics of a microfiltration pilot plant for varying surface water conditions. Statistical regression and modeling was used to determine and develop quantitative relationships between time of operation and several operational variables for water quality and productivity. Modifications of Darcy's Law and flux decline data were used to develop a model relating temperature and flux to cleaning frequency. Statistical hypothesis testing and associated modeling were used …
The Interaction Of The Division Order And The Lease Royalty Clause, Laura H. Burney
The Interaction Of The Division Order And The Lease Royalty Clause, Laura H. Burney
Faculty Articles
Because lease royalty clauses, which establish the obligation of the lessee to pay royalties to the lessor, generally fail to include the details necessary to calculate a lessor’s royalty, lessee or third party purchasers historically have implemented a division order. An additional document in the payment process, the division order protects against a lessee or third party purchaser’s liability for conversion or failure to account properly.
Recent court of appeals and Supreme Court of Texas opinions provide an analysis of the interaction of the lease royalty clause and the division order under Texas statutory and case law. The awkward wording …

Turán Inequalities For Symmetric Orthogonal Polynomials, Joaquin Bustoz, Mourad E. H. Ismail
Turán Inequalities For Symmetric Orthogonal Polynomials, Joaquin Bustoz, Mourad E. H. Ismail
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
A method is outlined to express a Turán determinant of solutions of a three term recurrence relation as a weighted sum of squares. This method is shown to imply the positivity of Turán determinants of symmetric Pollaczek polynomials, Lommel polynomials and q-Bessel functions.
Scientific Reasoning And Achievement In A High School English Course, Elmer A. Kral
Scientific Reasoning And Achievement In A High School English Course, Elmer A. Kral
ADAPT Program: Faculty Biographies and Links
The hypothetical-deductive pattern of reasoning, an advanced reasoning model common to science, can be effectively transferred to the study of English and improve both English usage and reasoning skills.
Though educators in the United States say that they already are teaching thinking and that the physical sciences and mathematics offer opportunities for learning higher-order reasoning skills, most observers agree that the goal of teaching students how to think has not been fulfilled. The reasons are varied. Perhaps the most serious deficiency is that teachers have never had a clear notion of just what advanced reasoning is--and just what to do …
