Helping Faculty Design Assignment-Centered Courses, Barbara E. Walvoord, John R. Breihan Jan 1997

Helping Faculty Design Assignment-Centered Courses, Barbara E. Walvoord, John R. Breihan

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Faculty developers must help faculty shift from a teaching paradigm to a learning paradigm. Workshops that help faculty plan the "assignment-centered" course are a productive approach to that challenge. This article shows faculty developers how to plan and lead such a workshop. Research suggests that faculty often focus on content and coverage in their course planning. To combat this tendency, the workshop leads faculty through the course-planning process. In the workshop, faculty first develop learning objectives, then plan the assignments and exams that will both teach and test the essential skills and knowledge of the course. Then faculty choose and …

Pricing Earthquake Exposure Using Modeling, Debra L. Werland, Joseph W. Pitts Jan 1997

Pricing Earthquake Exposure Using Modeling, Debra L. Werland, Joseph W. Pitts

Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)

This paper demonstrates a practical methodology for determining a statewide rate level indication for the earthquake insurance and for determining more equitable territorial relativities within a state. The methodology is based on the output from a certain commercially available earthquake modeling software package. The methodology addresses some of the complex issues involved in pricing earthquake insurance exposure and potential regulatory acceptance. The paper also features a section dealing with the net cost of reinsurance in the proposed direct rates. A final consideration is the treatment of a model's output when it is believed the modeled results art' less than fully …

Dynamic Immunization And Transaction Costs With Different Term Structure Models, Eliseo Navarro, Juan M. Nave Jan 1997

Dynamic Immunization And Transaction Costs With Different Term Structure Models, Eliseo Navarro, Juan M. Nave

Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)

A bond portfolio selection model is developed in a dynamic framework using different term structures, but without transactions costs. We show that the optimal portfolios are consistent with Khang's dynamic immunization theorem, i.e., the optimal path consists of making portfolio duration equal to the investor's horizon planning period. The model is then extended to include transaction costs. The resulting optimal portfolios are no longer consistent with Khang's dynamic immunization theorem. In fact, the strategy for constructing the optimal portfolio consists of initially choosing a portfolio with a duration that is smaller than the horizon planning period.

The Right To Underwrite? An Actuarial Perspective With A Difference, Thomas A. Moultrie, Guy R. Thomas Jan 1997

The Right To Underwrite? An Actuarial Perspective With A Difference, Thomas A. Moultrie, Guy R. Thomas

Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)

For a long time underwriting has been a part of the actuarial canon. With increasing frequency, however, challenges are being issued against the right of insurance companies to underwrite applications for new bUSiness, arguing that certain aspects of the practice are undesirably discriminatory. We explore the role of the actuary in the underwriting process and the challenges that are being set for the profession (as opposed to the life insurance industry) as a result of this role. As the distinction between the interests of the actuarial profession and the interests of the life insurance companies has become increasingly blurred, we …

An Index To Assess The Sensitivity Of Gulf Of Mexico Species To Changes In Estuarine Salinity Regimes, John D. Christensen, Mark E. Monaco, Tony A. Lowery Jan 1997

An Index To Assess The Sensitivity Of Gulf Of Mexico Species To Changes In Estuarine Salinity Regimes, John D. Christensen, Mark E. Monaco, Tony A. Lowery

Gulf and Caribbean Research

An index of biological sensitivity to changes in freshwater inflow was developed for 44 species in 22 Gulf of Mexico estuaries for adult and juvenile life stages of fishes and macroinvertebrates. The BioSalinity Index (BSI) provides an innovative approach to quantify estuary-specific sensitivity of organisms to changes in estuarine salinity regimes based upon our knowledge of species salinity habitat preferences, the availability of this preferred habitat, and the relative abundance and distribution of species in time and space. We found that a significant difference exists between adult and juvenile life stage sensitivity, with juveniles exhibiting a lower sensitivity to salinity …

Philosophical Underpinning: ARecent reports document that high dropout rates and low academic achievement by American Indian students stem in part from a pervasive disregard for cultural relevancy in the education of American Indian students. In particular, positive early and middle school experiences in science and mathematics are essential to preparing young Indian people for science and engineering careers.@ Source: (National Science Foundation ( 1995). Positive Solution Curves Of Semipositone Problems With Concave Nonlinearities, Alfonso Castro, Sudhasree Gadam, Ratnasingham Shivaji Jan 1997

Positive Solution Curves Of Semipositone Problems With Concave Nonlinearities, Alfonso Castro, Sudhasree Gadam, Ratnasingham Shivaji

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We consider the positive solutions to the semilinear equation:

-Δu(x) = λf(u(x)) for x ∈ Ω

u(x) = 0 for x ∈ ∂Ω

where Ω denotes a smooth bounded region in RN (N > 1) and λ > 0. Here f :[0, ∞)→R is assumed to be monotonically increasing, concave and such that f(0) < 0 (semipositone). Assuming that f'(∞) ≡ lim t→∞ f'(t) > 0, we establish the stability and uniqueness of large positive solutions in terms of (f(t)/t)'. When Ω is a ball, we determine the exact number of positive solutions for each λ > 0. We also obtain the geometry of the branches of positive solutions completely and establish how …

The Interaction Of A Point Vortex With A Wall-Bounded Vortex Layer, Oliver V. Atassi, Andrew J. Bernoff, Seth Lichter Jan 1997

The Interaction Of A Point Vortex With A Wall-Bounded Vortex Layer, Oliver V. Atassi, Andrew J. Bernoff, Seth Lichter

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

The interaction of a point vortex with a layer of constant vorticity, bounded below by a wall and above by an irrotational flow, is investigated as a model of vortex–boundary layer interaction. This model calculates both the evolution of the interface which separates the vortex layer from the irrotational flow and the trajectory of the vortex. In order to determine the conditions which lead to sustained unsteady interaction, three cases are investigated where the mutual interaction between the vortex and interface is initially assumed to be weak. (i) When a weak point vortex lies outside the layer, the vortex moves …

Adaptive Multicast Routing In Wormhole Networks, Ran Libeskind-Hadas, Tom Hehre '96, Andrew Hutchings '98, Mark Reyes '98, Kevin Watkins '97 Jan 1997

Adaptive Multicast Routing In Wormhole Networks, Ran Libeskind-Hadas, Tom Hehre '96, Andrew Hutchings '98, Mark Reyes '98, Kevin Watkins '97

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Multicast communication has applications in a number of fundamental operations in parallel computing. An effective multicast routing algorithm must be free from both livelock and deadlock while minimizing communication latency. We describe two classes of multicast wormhole routing algorithms that employ the multi-destination wormhole hardware mechanism proposed by Lin et al. [12] and Panda et al. [17]. Specific examples of these classes of algorithms are described and experimental results suggests that such algorithms enjoy low communication latencies across a range of network loads.

How Accurate Are Uk's Nitrogen Recommendations For Corn?, Kenneth L. Wells, James E. Dollarhide, David C. Ditsch

Soil Science News and Views

Average corn yields produced on soils with high yield potential have steadily been increasing in Kentucky during the past several years. Yields from such soils in years with adequate amounts of rainfall well distributed over the growing season (May-September) may average 180 to 200 bushels per acre. A bushel of corn with crude protein content of 8 to 9% contains about 1.3 to 1.4% total nitrogen (N) on a dry matter basis. This is about 0.6 to 0.7 lbs total N per bushel of corn (at 15.5% moisture), or 108 to 126 lbs N per acre for a 180 bu/A …

Economics Of Precision Farming: Payoff In The Future, Jess Lowenberg-Beboer Jan 1997

Economics Of Precision Farming: Payoff In The Future, Jess Lowenberg-Beboer

Soil Science News and Views

Precision agriculture is an infant technology. This infant has some of the signs of eventual greatness, but its full capacities will not be evident for some years. Like all infants, it will require an investment of time and resources to help it to maturity. This investment will have some short term payoff, but the main benefits will be in the future.

The purpose of this presentation is to help you manage your adoption of precision farming technology for that future payoff. The specific objectives will be to:review what we have learned about the economics of precision farming, identify future benefits, …
