The Comedia In Amsterdam, 1609-1621: Rodenburgh's Translation Of Aguilar's La Venganza Honrosa, Matthew D. Stroud

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

In the seventeenth century, the Spanish comedia was not only known outside of Spain, it informed other national literatures and was even performed abroad, either in Spanish or in translation. In most cases, it was received into an established cultural environment, such as Corneille's adaptations in France; its appearance was not considered politically inflammatory in any sense as the host cultures were able to deal with the comedia as only a literary phenomenon. In the case of the Low Countries before 1648, however, the comedia was translated and performed in a colony in more or less open rebellion against Spain …

Use Of Historical Data In Accounting Research: The Case Of The American Sugar Refining Company, Robert J. Bricker, Kevin Brown Jan 1997

Use Of Historical Data In Accounting Research: The Case Of The American Sugar Refining Company, Robert J. Bricker, Kevin Brown

Accounting Historians Journal

In 1908, the American Sugar Refining Company (ASR) reversed its long-held policy of secrecy as to its financial condition and performance. Prior work, applying contemporary capital market methods to ASR security price data of that period, has suggested a value to ASR shareholders of this policy reversal. This paper examines the historical record of that time and presents additional evidence on this matter, particularly in terms of identifying potentially confounding events occurring during the period under study. The results of this analysis suggest a difficulty in attributing observed abnormal returns to ASR's secrecy policy reversal on the basis of the …

Accounting History: The Contribution Of Osamu Zojima, John K. Courtis

Accounting Historians Journal

In 1987, Professor Kojima published his 16 chapter Japanese version of Introduction to Accounting History. His intention was to prepare an English translation, but he died on 21 February 1989 from cardiac infarction having reached the middle of the 13th chapter with an unfinished handwritten first draft. After this draft was subsequently typed, the unfinished portion of the English translation was completed by Mr E. Usami. Consultation with Professor B. S. Yamey resulted in the correction of errors by Professor Kojima's loyal colleagues, Professors Yoshihiro Hirabayashi (Osaka City University), Hiroyasu Okitsu (Kinki University) and Tsuneo Nakano (Kobe University). The translation …

Informing Historical Research In Accounting And Management: Traditions, Philosophies, And Opportunities, Lee D. Parker Jan 1997

Informing Historical Research In Accounting And Management: Traditions, Philosophies, And Opportunities, Lee D. Parker

Accounting Historians Journal

Historical research in accounting and management, hitherto largely neglected as a field of inquiry by many management and accounting researchers, has experienced a resurgence of interest and activity in research conferences and journals over the past decade. The potential lessons of the past for contemporary issues have been rediscovered, but the way forward is littered with antiquarian narratives, methodologically naive analyses, ideologically driven interpretation and ignorance of the traditions, schools and philosophy of the craft by accounting and management researchers as well as traditional and critical historians themselves. This paper offers an introduction to contributions made to the philosophies and …

Taking Our Actual Constitution Seriously, Thomas D. Eisele Jan 1997

Taking Our Actual Constitution Seriously, Thomas D. Eisele

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

In this review, by concentrating on the general aim of Dworkin's book, I hope to contribute to the discussion this book is sure to generate. What does the "moral reading" of our Constitution amount to, and what alternative do we have to endorsing such a reading? I ask these questions from what I would call a jurisprudential
perspective. For, while I do teach Jurisprudence, I do not teach Constitutional Law, other than some constitutional law themes that find their way into my Property and Wills & Trusts courses. Accordingly, I am not well placed to review the details or
the …

An Investigation Of The Early Factors Which Influence Women's Career Choices In Physical Science And Technology, Anneliese Payne

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The composition of the workforce has begun to undergo a change. The U.S Department of Labor estimates that women, minorities and immigrants will constitute 80 percent of the additions to the labor force between 1987 and the year 2000 (Oakes, 1990). The National Science Foundation projects that the United States may have a shortfall of 40,000 scientists and over 250,000 engineers by the year 2006 (Argonne, 1990). Since women are among those who are significantly underrepresented among individuals preparing for a career in science, thirty women who are currently pursuing a successful career in physical science and technology were interviewed. …

Medicaid Forecasting Practices, Dan Williams Jan 1997

Medicaid Forecasting Practices, Dan Williams

Publications and Research

This paper examines forecasting activities among Medicaid agencies in the fifty United States, Washington, D.C., and five U.S. territories (American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, Northern Mariana Islands, and Virgin Islands). Most frequently, studies of state or local forecasting practice focus on revenue forecasting. There are several reasons why comparison of state Medicaid forecast practice may be better than comparison of state revenue forecasting practices. First, there is no consistent reporting of state revenue estimates. States make forecasts when it suits them and report them in a manner that is satisfactory to their governors or legislatures. Collection of data through national …

Complexes Between Nascent Polypeptides And Their Molecular Chaperones In The Cytosol Of Mammalian Cells, Daryl K. Eggers, W. J. Welch, W. J. Hansen

Faculty Publications, Chemistry

Folding of newly synthesized proteins in vivo is believed to be facilitated by the cooperative interaction of a defined group of proteins known as molecular chaperones. We investigated the direct interaction of chaperones with nascent polypeptides in the cytosol of mammalian cells by multiple methods. A new approach using a polyclonal antibody to puromycin allowed us to tag and capture a population of truncated nascent polypeptides with no bias as to the identity of the bound chaperones. In addition, antibodies that recognize the cytosolic chaperones hsp70, CCT (TRiC), hsp40, p48 (Hip), and hsp90 were compared on the basis of their …
