Constraints On The Production Of Ultra–High-Energy Cosmic Rays By Isolated Neutron Stars, Aparna Venkatesan, M Coleman Miller, Angela V. Olinto Jan 1997

Constraints On The Production Of Ultra–High-Energy Cosmic Rays By Isolated Neutron Stars, Aparna Venkatesan, M Coleman Miller, Angela V. Olinto

Physics and Astronomy

The energetics, spectrum, and composition of cosmic rays with energies below ~1015 eV are fairly well explained by models involving supernova shocks. In contrast, no widely accepted theory exists for the origin of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs), which have energies above 1015 eV. Instead of proposing a specific model, here we place strong constraints on any model of UHECRs involving isolated neutron stars (no companions). We consider the total power requirements and show that the only viable power source associated with isolated neutron stars is rotation. Mechanisms based on accretion from the interstellar medium fall short of the …

An Evaluation Of Mango (Mangifera Indica L.) Cultivars And Their Commercial Suitability For The Kimberley, P. R. Johnson, D. M. Robinson

Horticulture published reports

An evaluation of 74 mango cultivars was conducted from 1983 to 1995 in the Ord River Irrigation Area (ORIA) on Cockatoo sand. The aim to determine their suitability for commercial production and establish the basis for a mango industry in the Northern tropics of Western Australia. Measurements were made on yield, harvest times, flowering times, brix, fruit quality, growth rates and market acceptability. Results have indicated that cultivars, other than Kensington Pride, most commercially suitable in the ORIA are Banana for early cropping in mid September, Irwin for high regular yields and good market acceptability, Haden for excellent market acceptability, …

Point And Line Disclinations In Models Of The Blue Phases, Peter J. Collings Jan 1997

Point And Line Disclinations In Models Of The Blue Phases, Peter J. Collings

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

The model of the liquid crystalline blue phases proposed by Alfred Saupe in 1969 is examined in light of the recent, successful theoretical models for these phases. Such an analysis demonstrates that Saupe's model captures all of the important features of the recent models, differing only in the density of line disclinations. The fact that Saupe proposed this model over ten years before the more recent work and without the benefit of a significant amout of new experimental evidence is testimony for his keen physical insight. Such models continue to be useful as researchers direct their attention to the less …

Astrophysical Bounds On Global Strings, Shane L. Larson, William A. Hiscock Jan 1997

Astrophysical Bounds On Global Strings, Shane L. Larson, William A. Hiscock

All Physics Faculty Publications

Global topological defects produce nonzero stress energy throughout spacetime, and as a result can have observable gravitational influence on surrounding matter. Gravitational effects of global strings are used to place bounds on their cosmic abundance. The minimum separation between global strings is estimated by considering the defects' contribution to the cosmological energy density. More rigorous constraints on the abundance of global strings are constructed by examining the tidal forces such defects will have on observable astrophysical systems. The small number of observed tidally disrupted systems indicates there can be very few of these objects in the observable Universe.

A Load Balancing Technique For Multiphase Computations, Jerrell Watts, Marc Rieffel, Stephen Taylor Jan 1997

A Load Balancing Technique For Multiphase Computations, Jerrell Watts, Marc Rieffel, Stephen Taylor

College of Engineering and Computer Science - Former Departments, Centers, Institutes and Projects

Parallel computations comprised of multiple, tightly interwoven phases of computation may require a different approach to dynamic load balancing than single-phase computations. This paper presents a load sharing method based on the view of load as a vector, rather than as a scalar. This approach allows multiphase computations to achieve higher efficiency on large-scale multicomputers than possible with traditional techniques. Results are presented for two large-scale particle simulations running on 128 nodes of an Intel Paragon and on 256 processors of a Cray T3D, respectively.

Standardization Of A Communication Middleware For High-Performance Real-Time Systems, Arkady Kanevsky, Anthony Skjellum, Jerrell Watts Jan 1997

Standardization Of A Communication Middleware For High-Performance Real-Time Systems, Arkady Kanevsky, Anthony Skjellum, Jerrell Watts

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

The last several years saw an emergence of standardization activities for real-time systems including standardization of operating systems (series of POSIX standards [1]), of communication for distributed (POSIX.21 [10]) and parallel systems (MPI/RT [5]) and real-time object management (realtime CORBA [9]). This article describes the ongoing standardization work and implementation of communication middleware for high performance real-time computing. The real-time message passing interface (MPI/RT) advances the non-real-time high-performance communication standard Message Passing Interface Standard (MPI), emphasizing changes that enable and support real-time communication, and is targeted for embedded, fault-tolerant and other real-time systems. MPI/RT is the only communication middleware layer …

Resource Access Control For An Internet User Agent, Nataraj Nagaratnam, Steven B. Byrne Jan 1997

Resource Access Control For An Internet User Agent, Nataraj Nagaratnam, Steven B. Byrne

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

The rapid increase in the Internet's connectivity has lead to proportional increase in the development of Web-based applications. Usage of downloadable content has proved effective in a number of emerging applications including electronic commerce, software components on-demand, and collaborative systems. In all these cases, Internet user agents (like browsers, tuners) are widely used by the clients to utilize and execute such downloadable content. With this new technology of using downloadable content comes the problem of the downloaded content obtaining unauthorized access to the client's resources. In effect, granting a hostile remote principal the requested access to client's resources may lead …

Chemistry - All Scholarship

A kinetic analysis of cleavage of simian virus DNA (SV40 DNA) inside and outside green monkey BSC-I cells by the enediyne-protein antibiotic C-1027 and its free chromophore is described. Information on rate constants was obtained by fitting populations of forms I (closed circular DNA), II (nicked circular DNA) and III (linear DNA) of SV4f.J DNA as a function of drug concentration to a kinetic model which includes: cutting of form I to give form II with rate constant k1. cutting of form I to give form III with rate constant k4, and cutting of form II to give form III …

Agent-Based Expert Assistance For Visual Problem Solving, Erika Rogers, Robin R. Murphy, Barb Ericson Jan 1997

Agent-Based Expert Assistance For Visual Problem Solving, Erika Rogers, Robin R. Murphy, Barb Ericson

Computer Science and Software Engineering

This paper presents a domain-independent architecture for facilitating visual problem solving between robots or softbots and humans. The architecture defines virtual and human agents in terms of their inherent cognitive and perceptual abilities, and their weak and strong knowledge sources. It introduces a third agent, an expert assistant called teleVIA, to mediate the flow of information, facilitate cooperation, filter and cache data, and generate the appropriate visual displays. The agent architecture addresses the technical issues of using an expert assistant to coordinate perception, thought, and action, manage sensing and perception, facilitate diagnosis, and to support the collaboration between people and …

Wetland Resources Of Eastern South Dakota, Rex R. Johnson, Kenneth F. Higgins Jan 1997

Wetland Resources Of Eastern South Dakota, Rex R. Johnson, Kenneth F. Higgins

Natural Resource Management Faculty Books

The mere mention of the word "wetland" in coffee shops and other gathering places on the prairies today brings out emotions and opinions that run the gamut from saving them all to draining them all. To some people, what we do with wetlands has been, and still is, a personal choice, a matter of exercising individual rights on private property. To others, wetlands are community resources that provide values that touch all of society. They contend that what is done to and about wetlands is a community decision regardless of ownership. Herein lies the controversy we have experienced over wetlands …

Assessment And Collaborative Writing: Conflict To Complement, John Michael Sullivan Jan 1997

Assessment And Collaborative Writing: Conflict To Complement, John Michael Sullivan

Theses Digitization Project

One of the fundamental problems facing writing instructors who use collaboration is that traditional assessment measures, such as in-class essay exams, undermine rather than support such writing activities that are rooted in social construction theory. While the use of collaboration in writing classrooms continues to grow, the field of assessment remains virtually silent about the compatibility of traditional assessment methods with collaborative writing tasks such as group work and peer review. This thesis discusses social construction and assessment theories, their relation to collaboration, and the current role of both in writing classrooms.
