A New Distributed Constant False Alarm Rate Detector, Hamid Amirmehrabi, R. Viswanathan Jan 1997

A New Distributed Constant False Alarm Rate Detector, Hamid Amirmehrabi, R. Viswanathan

Articles

A new constant false alarm rate (CFAR) test termed signal-plus-order statistic CFAR (S+OS) using distributed sensors is developed. The sensor modeling assumes that the returns of the test cells of different sensors are all independent and identically distributed. In the S+OS scheme, each sensor transmits its test sample and a designated order statistic of its surrounding observations to the fusion center. At the fusion center, the sum of the samples of the test cells is compared with a constant multiplied by a function of the order statistics. For a two-sensor network, the functions considered are the minimum of the order …

Dicta, University Of Michigan Law School

Miscellaneous Law School History & Publications

This is the third year of Dicta, the law school's literary journal and a child of the vision of two 1996 graduates, Miles Yanick and Matt Morris. We hope that this creative forum will continue to grow and to flourish, enriching the law school community by offering a spectrum of poetry, fiction, essays, photography, and artwork. The editors faced a difficult task again this year as we again received more material than we could publish. We continued the policy of considering all submissions anonymously. This final product reflects the often conflicting views of the editors who tried to select a …

Physics & Astronomy

New, coordinated measurements from the International Solar-Terrestrial Physics (ISTP) constellation of spacecraft are presented to show the causes and effects of recurrent geomagnetic activity during recent solar minimum conditions. It is found using WIND and POLAR data that even for modest geomagnetic storms, relativistic electron fluxes are strongly and rapidly enhanced within the outer radiation zone of the Earth's magnetosphere. Solar wind data are utilized to identify the drivers of magnetospheric acceleration processes. Yohkoh solar soft X-ray data are also used to identify the solar coronal holes that produce the high-speed solar wind streams which, in turn, cause the recurrent …

Quantum Coherence In Small Antiferromagnets, S. E. Barnes, R. Ballou, B. Barbara, J. Strelen

Physics Articles and Papers

An antiferromagnetic particle with an excess spin j⃗ has 2 degrees of freedom. The one associated with j⃗ is ferromagnetic, while the antiferromagnetic behavior involves Néel vector n⃗. It is shown that the spin-parity effect described by Loss et al. has to do with the ferromagnetic degree of freedom and does not imply the localization of n⃗ for small enough particles for half-integer spin. It is also shown that the tunnel splitting associated with n⃗ is insensitive to applied fields.

How Do Bacteria Move Through Soil?, Mark S. Coyne, J. M. Howell, R. E. Phillips Jan 1997

How Do Bacteria Move Through Soil?, Mark S. Coyne, J. M. Howell, R. E. Phillips

Soil Science News and Views

The contamination of water supplies by fecal bacteria is an important water quality issue in Kentucky. Contamination may come from point sources, such as straight pipes depositing raw sewage into streams, or nonpoint sources, such as manure runoff from cropland. A direct cost of contaminating water supplies is the expense that homesteads or water companies incur to chlorinate, filter, and otherwise treat water to make it potable. Indirect costs are the time lost to illness from drinking inadequately treated water, slower weight gain in livestock drinking contaminated water, and the degradation of aquatic habitats.

Maturity Model Linkages Between Software Development Teams, Users And Quality, Eugene G. Mcguire

Journal of International Information Management

Information Systems literature has shown clear linkages between the selection of software development methodologies, the actions of software development teams, overall product quality, and user satisfaction. Rarely are these linkages emphasized, however, in current research on process improvement. This paper examines the convergence of these areas and discusses current research designed to further explore these linkages within the Capability Maturity Model (CMM) framework.

Late Cretaceous Dinosaurs In Eastern Usa—A Taphonomic And Biogeographic Model Of Occurrences., David R. Schwimmer Jan 1997

Late Cretaceous Dinosaurs In Eastern Usa—A Taphonomic And Biogeographic Model Of Occurrences., David R. Schwimmer

Faculty Bibliography

The eastern Coastal Plains of the USA contain a Late Cretaceous dinosaur assemblage of limited taxic diversity, but with wide distribution and reasonably good abundance. The ages of specimens range from Santonian through late Maastrichtian. All Late Cretaceous eastern dinosaur specimens occur in pericontinental or marine strata, and therefore all such fossils are likely to be allochthonous. New materials and insights bear on the taphonomy of these marine occurrences, suggesting that fluvially-transported, floating carcasses, many scavenged by sharks, make up most of the eastern marine dinosaur record. There is little evidence of faunal provinciality across the entire eastern outcrop: fossil …

New Atlantis Revisited: Akademgorodok, The Siberian City Of Science, Paul R. Josephson Jan 1997

New Atlantis Revisited: Akademgorodok, The Siberian City Of Science, Paul R. Josephson

Faculty Books

In 1958 construction began on Akademgorodok, a scientific utopian community modeled after Francis Bacon's vision of a "New Atlantis." The city, carved out of a Siberian forest 2,500 miles east of Moscow, was formed by Soviet scientists with Khrushchev's full support. They believed that their rational science, liberated from ideological and economic constraints, would help their country surpass the West in all fields. In a lively history of this city, a symbol of de-Stalinization, Paul Josephson offers the most complete analysis available of the reasons behind the successes and failures of Soviet science--from advances in nuclear physics to politically induced …

Colby College Watershed Study: Other Area Studies

The main purpose of this study is to assess the current land use patterns and their influences on the water quality of Messalonskee Lake, including the biotic and abiotic parameters which are involved. More specifically, four main objectives were proposed. First, was to calculate the water budget and flushing rate for Messalonskee Lake. Second, was to determine the influence of current and historical land use patterns on lake water quality. Third, was to utilize gathered information to construct a phosphorus model, which will enable future water quality predictions to be made. Our fourth and final objective was to make recommendations …

An Error Handling Framework For The Orbwork Workflow Enactment Service Of Meteor, Davasish Worah, Amit P. Sheth, Krzysztof J. Kochut, John A. Miller

Kno.e.sis Publications

Workflow Management Systems (WFMSs) can be used to re-engineer, streamline, automate, and track organizational processes involving humans and automated information systems. However, the state-of-the-art in workflow technology suffers from a number of limitations that prevent it from being widely used in large-scale mission critical applications. Error handling is one such issue. What makes the task of error handling challenging is the need to deal with errors that appear in various components of a complex distributed application execution environment, including various WFMS components, workflow application tasks of different types, and the heterogeneous computing infrastructure.

In this paper, we discuss a top-down …

Profitability Of Variable Rate Fertilization On A Kentucky Soil (A Theoretical Analysis), Lloyd W. Murdock, Paula L. Howe

Soil Science News and Views

Grid soil sampling and variable rate fertilizer applications are a part of the precision agriculture movement that has captured the interest of many farmers. Variable rate fertilization requires extra expense and effort plus the use of often unfamiliar technology. Global Positioning Systems (GPS) equipment and computer software are used to outline and grid the field into small manageable units or “cells” (usually 2.5 acres). Each grid cell is soil sampled and tested for pH and available nutrients. Fertilizer recommendations are made on each grid cell and the fertilizer is spread by each grid cell using a truck equipped with GPS …
