Rodent Exclusion Techniques: A Training Guide For National Park Service Employees, Gerard Hoddenbach, Jerry Johnson, Carol Disalvo Jan 1997

Rodent Exclusion Techniques: A Training Guide For National Park Service Employees, Gerard Hoddenbach, Jerry Johnson, Carol Disalvo

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

Rodents have been a common problem in living and working environments, probably, ever since humans began living in permanent dwellings. Even today many people believe rodent infestations are "inevitable". However, the recent appearance of Hantavirus (Sin Nombre Virus, Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, HPS) in the Western states has re-awakened the public to the serious health problems posed by rodents and has prompted new inquiries into more effective ways to manage infestations. This manual is designed as a training reference for making rodent control in buildings an attainable goal.

Using the Goddard High-Resolution Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope, we measured the flux of [Fe IV] (3d5 4P5/2 --> 3d5 6S5/2) λvac = 2836.56 Å in the Orion Nebula, the first detection of an [Fe IV] line in an H II region. A useful upper limit is set on the sum of fluxes of [Fe IV] (3d5 4D5/2, 3/2 --> 3d5 6S5/2) λvac = 2568.4, 2568.2 Å. By comparing these observations with predicted fluxes from simply ``retrofitting'' our two previous photoionization models, …

Complexity Theory And Systems Theory, Martin Zwick Jan 1997

Complexity Theory And Systems Theory, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

I use the label, “complexity theory,” for the research program which studies nonlinear dynamics, “complexity,” “complex adaptive systems,” “artificial life,” etc., and whose intellectual Mecca in the United States is the Santa Fe Institute. I use the label, “systems theory,” for the research program which crystallized after World War II under the names of “general systems theory” and “cybernetics,” and which subsumed such postwar scientific developments as information theory, game theory, feedback control theory, and the beginnings of computer science and artificial intelligence. The central thesis of this paper is that complexity theory is a continuation and revitalization of systems …

Where Have All The Teachers Gone?, Mark Fetler Jan 1997

Where Have All The Teachers Gone?, Mark Fetler

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

A rising need for teachers is projected in California and the nation during the next decade. Sound policy for teacher preparation should not only foster a capable workforce, it should also assure that the supply of qualified teachers balances with employment demand. A conceptual model is proposed to describe the flow of individuals through teacher preparation programs and the workplace.

Structural Issues In Active Rule Systems, James Bailey, Guozhu Dong, Kotagiri Ramamohanarao Jan 1997

Structural Issues In Active Rule Systems, James Bailey, Guozhu Dong, Kotagiri Ramamohanarao

Kno.e.sis Publications

Active database systems enhance the functionality of traditional databases through the use of active rules or ‘triggers’. There is little consensus, though, on what components should be included in a rule system. In this paper, the expressive power of some simple active database rule systems is examined and the effect of choosing different features studied. Four important parameters of variation are presented, namely the rule language, the external query language, the meta rule language and the pending rule structure. We show that each of these is highly influential in determining the expressiveness of the rule system as a whole, and …

Progress In The Study Of Cdznte Strip Detectors, O Tousignant, L A. Hamel, J F. Courville, P Paki, John R. Macri, K Larson, M Mayer, Mark L. Mcconnell, James M. Ryan

Space Science Center

We report new performance measurements and computer simulations of a sub-millimeter pitch CdZnTe strip detector under study as a prototype imaging spectrometer for astronomical x-ray and gamma-ray observations. The prototype is 1.5 mm thick with 375 micron strip pitch in both the x and y dimensions. Previously reported work included demonstrations of half-pitch spatial resolution (approximately 190 microns) and good energy resolution and spectral uniformity. Strip detector efficiency measurements have also been presented. A model that includes the photon interaction, carrier transport and the electronics was developed that qualitatively reproduced the measurements. The new studies include measurements of the CdZnTe …

Synthetic Strategies For The Construction Of Enantiomeric Azanoradamantanes, Daniel Becker, Roger Nosal, Daniel L. Zabrowski, Daniel Flynn Jan 1997

Synthetic Strategies For The Construction Of Enantiomeric Azanoradamantanes, Daniel Becker, Roger Nosal, Daniel L. Zabrowski, Daniel Flynn

Chemistry: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The amino azanoradamantane hexahydro-2,5b-methano-IH-3aS,3aa,6aa-cyclopenta-[clpyrrole-4a-amine 1and the corresponding enantiomer ent-1 have been prepared along with benzamide derivatives SC-52491and SC-52490, respectively, which are of pharmaceutical interest. The key meso-azabicyclo[3.3.0] intermediate 3 was prepared via three separate routes: a [3+2] cycloaddition route, a radical cyclization/ionic cyclization route, and a reductive Pauson-Khand route.

High Resolution Imaging Of Thin-Film Recording Heads By Superparamagnetic Magnetic Force Microscopy Tips, Sy_Hwang Liou, S.S. Malhotra, John Moreland, P.F. Hopkins

Sy-Hwang Liou Publications

We have used superparamagnetic magnetic force microscopy (MFM) tips to obtain high spatial resolution MFM images of recording heads. Profiles of the magnetic field gradient above a thin-film recording head under 3 mA bias current to the head and various tip-head distance conditions are presented. At a low tip-head distance, the gap width, gap location, and gap-field structure can be well resolved in these MFM images. Superparamagnetic tips show promise for the magnetic imaging of recording heads with gap widths below 200 nm.

The Fairness In Musical Licensing Act: The Tavern Bill Casts A Shadow, Julie B. Raines

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

The Fairness in Musical Licensing Act, now pending before Congress, would allow restaurants owners and other businesses to play copyrighted music in their place of business without paying royalties or licensing fees to the copyright owner. This Article discusses the Fairness Act in the context of the 1976 Copyright Act and analyzes the effect of the Fairness Act on the future of the music industry if it passes into law. This Article also offers other possible solutions to the underlying conflicts that the Fairness Act seeks to remedy. The author concludes that the Fairness Act unreasonably exempts a large group …

Raman-Scattering Study Of The Order-Disorder Phase Transition In Kscn, R. Li, John R. Hardy Jan 1997

Raman-Scattering Study Of The Order-Disorder Phase Transition In Kscn, R. Li, John R. Hardy

John R. Hardy Papers

Raman measurements were performed from room temperature to above the phase transition at 413 K on KSCN crystals. The internal mode spectra reveal a sideband above the internal CN stretching vibration which shows softening in frequency approaching the phase transition, while the CN mode shifts toward higher frequencies. Given that the sideband is a two-phonon process, involving an off-zone-center CN stretching mode and a lattice phonon, the substantial softening in its frequency shift indicates the possibility of an off-zone-center lattice instability related to the order-disorder phase transition. An anomalous temperature dependence was also found for the intensity of both the …

Implementing Uneven-Aged Redwood Management At Cal Poly's School Forest, An Update, Douglas D. Piirto, Richard P. Thompson, Kevin L. Piper

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

California Polytechnic State University's School Ranch and Forest, called Swanton Pacific Ranch, is located just north of Santa Cruz, California and encompasses approximately 3,800 acres of crop, range, and forested areas. Coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens [D. Don] Endl.), Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb.] Franco var. menziesii) and tanoak (Lithocarpus densiflorus [Hook. & Arn.] Rehd.) occur on approciximately 1,900 acres of the Swanton Pacific Ranch and at Valencia. Because of its high stumpage value, coast redwood is the preferred management species. In addition to economic reality, California Forest Practice laws severely limit the extent of stand manipulation that …
