Vcu Voice (1997-02-24)

VCU Voice, 1988-1998

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

The Poisson Ratio Of Crystalline Surfaces, Marco Falcioni, Mark Bowick, Emmanuel Guitter, Gudmar Thorleifsson Feb 1997

The Poisson Ratio Of Crystalline Surfaces, Marco Falcioni, Mark Bowick, Emmanuel Guitter, Gudmar Thorleifsson

Physics - All Scholarship

A remarkable theoretical prediction for a crystalline (polymerized) surface is that its Poisson ratio (\sigma) is negative. Using a large scale Monte Carlo simulation of a simple model of such surfaces we show that this is indeed true. The precise numerical value we find is (\sigma \simeq -0.32) on a (128^2) lattice at bending rigidity (kappa = 1.1). This is in excellent agreement with the prediction (\sigma = -1/3) following from the self-consistent screening approximation of Le Doussal and Radzihovsky.

A Mechanical Duffing Oscillator For The Undergraduate Laboratory, J. E. Berger, G. Nunes Feb 1997

A Mechanical Duffing Oscillator For The Undergraduate Laboratory, J. E. Berger, G. Nunes

Dartmouth Scholarship

The design and construction of a mechanical Duffing oscillator suitable for use in an undergraduate laboratory is described. The oscillator provides a straightforward introduction to nonlinear vibrations and chaotic behavior that is both pedagogically appealing and easily adapted to students at various levels of sophistication. Good agreement is observed between the motion of the oscillator and computer simulations, which provides students with an introduction to the power of mathematical modeling. Period-doubling routes to chaos can be observed both experimentally and numerically.

Vapor–Liquid Coexistence Of Quasi-Two-Dimensional Stockmayer Fluids, G.T. Gao, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Wenchuan Wang Feb 1997

Vapor–Liquid Coexistence Of Quasi-Two-Dimensional Stockmayer Fluids, G.T. Gao, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Wenchuan Wang

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

A quasi-two-dimensional (2D) Stockmayer model is developed in which the center of mass of the molecule is confined on a plane while the dipole of the molecule can rotate freely in three dimensional space. This model entails essential characteristics of systems such as dipolar molecules physisorbed on a solid surface, or a Langmuir monolayer consisting of short-chain molecules with a dipolar tail. The Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo technique is employed to determine the vapor– liquid equilibria of the model fluids. An Ewald sum for this quasi-2D model is formulated to account for the long-range dipolar interactions. Three systems with different …

Recurrence And Transience Of Reflecting Diffusions., S. Balaji Dr. Feb 1997

Recurrence And Transience Of Reflecting Diffusions., S. Balaji Dr.

Doctoral Theses

An attempt to obtain conditions for certain stability properties of reflecting diffusions in unbounded domains with boundary has been made in this thesis. For diffusions in R', such stability properties like recurrence, transience and positive recurrence have been studied extensively; see Bhattacharya (1978), Kliemann (1987), Pinsky (1987). One might see Pinsky (1995) for an up-to-date review of kuown methods and results in this all case. (For corresponding recurrence classification results on Markov chains using martin- gale ideas based on stoxchastic analogues of Lyapunov functions, see Meyn and Tweedie (1993a), (1993b) and the references given therein). The main concern in this …

The Hydroperoxyl Radical Dimer: Triplet Ring Or Singlet String?, Justin T. Fermann, Brian C. Huffman, Gregory S. Tschumper, Henry F. Schaefer Feb 1997

The Hydroperoxyl Radical Dimer: Triplet Ring Or Singlet String?, Justin T. Fermann, Brian C. Huffman, Gregory S. Tschumper, Henry F. Schaefer

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

In order to determine the lowest energy isomer of the hydroperoxyl radical dimer, H2O4, ab initio quantum mechanical methods were employed to predict the geometrical structures, relative energies, harmonic vibrational frequencies, and associated IR intensities of both open chain and cyclic isomers. Two minima were located on the open chain potential energy surface, one of C2 symmetry and one of C1 symmetry. The relative energies of the different H2O4 structures vary strongly with level of theory. The most reliable treatment used in the present study predicted that the global minimum is the closed-shell C1 chain isomer which …

The Uses And Abuses Of Risk Management: How Men Learnt To Bet Against The Gods, Kenneth Anderson Feb 1997

The Uses And Abuses Of Risk Management: How Men Learnt To Bet Against The Gods, Kenneth Anderson

Book Reviews

This 1997 review in the Times Literary Supplement (London) conjoins two books - the first, by investment banker turned finance historian Peter L. Berstein, is a history of the idea of risk, as it developed from Renaissance times through contemporary finance. The second, by the former editor of the derivatives journal Risk, Lillian Chew, is an account of contemporary financial derivatives and their uses and abuses. The point of linking these two books in a single review is to point out that the basic ideas behind today's financial derivatives - forms of forwards, options, swaps, and so on - are …
