The Transition From Junior High School To Middle School: Case Studies From North Dakota., Anne Shearer-Shineman Mar 1997

The Transition From Junior High School To Middle School: Case Studies From North Dakota., Anne Shearer-Shineman

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the transformation process used by three North Dakota schools that previously operated as traditional junior high schools prior to changing to middle schools. The schools represented distinct situations in demographics, enrollment, and the process used to implement change. Through close inspection of three settings, I considered whether or not processes, problems, or successes common to all three schools existed. The most important questions dealt with the transition process used in each case and the result. Relevant information sought for the study included the rationale for implementation, description of the planning process, length of the transition process, and …

Discovering The Dimensions Of Collaboration: An Investigation Of The Reliability And Validity Of The Modified Interagency Arrangement Model., Linda Mae Olson Mar 1997

Discovering The Dimensions Of Collaboration: An Investigation Of The Reliability And Validity Of The Modified Interagency Arrangement Model., Linda Mae Olson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of the Modified Interagency Arrangement Model and to add to the knowledge base about measurement of interagency collaboration. An instrument that would allow evaluation of the collaboration was developed. The characteristics of the instrument were investigated through a study of the North Dakota Early Childhood Tracking System (NDECTS) interagency arrangement structure. Validity of the instrument was examined by evaluating the modified IAM instrument's factor structure, content validity, and criterion-referenced validity. A measure of reliability was performed by examining the internal consistency of subscales and the entire scale. The sample studied were …

Structural Equation Modeling Packages: An Empirical Comparison., Marilyn Gwen Klug Mar 1997

Structural Equation Modeling Packages: An Empirical Comparison., Marilyn Gwen Klug

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of statistical computer programs in educational research, specifically for the method of structural equations and path analysis. This method encompasses a wide array of research methods, including regression analysis and analysis of covariance. This method also includes the use of visual representation of structural equations through path diagrams. The three structural equation software packages Amos, EQS, and LISREL were compared to evaluate their capabilities in research. The packages capabilities in research were evaluated by investigating the way in which each package read in data (including matrices), handled missing values, transformed data …

The Geodetic Signature Of The M8.0 Oct. 9, 1995, Jalisco Subduction Earthquake, Timothy I. Melbourne, I. Carmichael, C. Demets, K. Hudnut, O. Sanchez, J. Stock, G. Suarez, F. Webb Mar 1997

The Geodetic Signature Of The M8.0 Oct. 9, 1995, Jalisco Subduction Earthquake, Timothy I. Melbourne, I. Carmichael, C. Demets, K. Hudnut, O. Sanchez, J. Stock, G. Suarez, F. Webb

Faculty Scholarship for the Cascadia Hazards Institute

The October, 1995 Mw 8.0 Jalisco subduction earthquake has provided a thorough geodetic observation of the coseismic subduction process. An 11 station regional GPS network located directly onshore of the rupture demonstrates consistent vertical subsidence verified by tide gauge data and southwest-directed extension, with measured displacements reaching 1 meter. Unusually shallow and non-uniform faulting is required to explain the displacements. We determine that up to 5 meters of slip occurred within the upper 15 km of the thrust fault zone and 2 meters possibly as shallow as 8 km, and that slip was likely distributed in two main patches. The …

Matroids Arisen From Matrogenic Graphs, Guoli Ding, Peter L. Hammer

Faculty Publications

Let G be a finite simple graph and let ℐ(G) be the set of subsets X of V(G) such that the subgraph of G induced by X is threshold. If ℐ(G) is the independence system of a matroid, then G is called matrogenic [3]. In this paper, we characterize matroids arising from matrogenic graphs.

Sea Brightness Temperature And Effects Of Spray And Whitecaps, Richard P. Barber Jr., Jin Wu Mar 1997

Sea Brightness Temperature And Effects Of Spray And Whitecaps, Richard P. Barber Jr., Jin Wu

Physics

Following the approach of Tang [1974], the microwave brightness of the sea surface is recalculated with recent parameterizations in terms of wind velocity for the slope distribution and whitecap coverage of the sea surface and the contribution of sea spray. The difference between this revised calculation with no free parameters and the earlier one becomes more significant as the wind velocity increases; it reaches 10 K or more at a wind velocity of 20 m s-1. Present predictions compare favorably with experimental results, suggesting that this model does include the essential physical mechanisms.

Molecular Cloning And Functional Analysis Of Polyphosphoinositide-Dependent Phospholipase D, Pldβ, From Arabidopsis, Kirk Pappan, Wensheng Qin, Jim Dyer, Ling Zheng, Xuemin Wang Mar 1997

Molecular Cloning And Functional Analysis Of Polyphosphoinositide-Dependent Phospholipase D, Pldβ, From Arabidopsis, Kirk Pappan, Wensheng Qin, Jim Dyer, Ling Zheng, Xuemin Wang

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

A novel plant phospholipase D (PLD; EC 3.1.4.4) activity, which is dependent on phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2) and nanomolar concentrations of calcium, has been identified in Arabidopsis. This report describes the cloning, expression, and characterization of an Arabidopsis cDNA that encodes this PLD. We have designated names of PLDβ for this PIP2- dependent PLD and PLDα for the previously characterized PIP2-independent PLD that requires millimolar Ca2+ for optimal activity. The PLDβ cDNA contains an open reading frame of 2904 nucleotides coding for a 968-amino acid protein of 108,575 daltons. Expression of this PLDβ cDNA clone in Escherichia coli results in the …

Department of Urology Faculty Papers

There is a wide array of endoscopic lithotriptors presently available. Each of these has its own advantages and disadvantages. No single lithotriptor is suitable for all applications and none can meet the goal of fragmenting all calculi while remaining harmless to tissue.
