Efficiency Of Molecular Hydrogen Formation On Silicates, Gianfranco Vidali, Valerio Pirronello, Ofer Biham, Chi Liu, Lyiong Shen Apr 1997

Efficiency Of Molecular Hydrogen Formation On Silicates, Gianfranco Vidali, Valerio Pirronello, Ofer Biham, Chi Liu, Lyiong Shen

Physics - All Scholarship

We report on laboratory measurements of molecular hydrogen formation and recombination on an olivine slab as a function of surface temperature under conditions relevant to those encountered in the interstellar medium. On the basis of our experimental evidence, we recognize that there are two main regimes of H coverage that are of astrophysical importance; for each of them we provide an expression giving the production rate of molecular hydrogen in interstellar clouds.

The Effect Of A Word Processing Program On Secondary Students With Mild Learning Disabilities In Essay Composition As Compared With Essays Produced Using Paper And Pencil, Donna J. Ewing Apr 1997

The Effect Of A Word Processing Program On Secondary Students With Mild Learning Disabilities In Essay Composition As Compared With Essays Produced Using Paper And Pencil, Donna J. Ewing

Theses and Dissertations

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of computer based word processing versus paper and pencil in essay composition. This study used a repeated measure and an alternating treatment design to compare student performance in constructing essays under two experimental conditions a.) using a computer based word processor and b.) using paper and pencil. Analysis of error rate and measure for each student indicated varied improvements under the computer condition for composition length, length of sentences, grammatically correct sentences, paragraph development, content area, composing time, misspellings, and grammatical errors. Participants included twenty-five secondary students with mild learning disabilities.

Macdonald On Aristotle On The Good, Jurgis Brakas Apr 1997

Macdonald On Aristotle On The Good, Jurgis Brakas

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

There is a passage in the Nicomachean Ethics (NE) that holds out the promise of giving us a profound insight into Aristotle’s view of the good. The problem is that the passage, A.6: 1096a23-29, has proved remarkably resistant to satisfactory interpretation, defying the efforts of scholars over the last eight decades. It argues, contra Plato, that the good cannot be one thing and, according to Irwin’s translation, reads as follows:

Further, good is spoken of in as many ways as being is spoken of. For it is spoken of in [the category of] what-it-is, as god and mind; in quality, …

Introduction To Heterogeneous Computing Including Corba (Common Object Request Broker Architecture), Matthew S. Staben

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

This capstone discusses the ability of two or more machines to cooperatively work to accomplish a task, called heterogeneous computing. It explores different ways for computers to connect. Ultimately, Staben determines that object request brokers compliant systems are ideal for communication across servers.

Multiflavor Massive Schwinger Model With Non-Abelian Bosonization, Joseph Schechter, David Delphenich Apr 1997

Multiflavor Massive Schwinger Model With Non-Abelian Bosonization, Joseph Schechter, David Delphenich

Physics - All Scholarship

We revisit the treatment of the multiflavor massive Schwinger model by non-Abelian Bosonization. We compare three different approximations to the low-lying spectrum: i) reading it off from the bosonized Lagrangian (neglecting interactions), ii) semi-classical quantization of the static soliton, iii) approximate semi-classical quantization of the ``breather'' solitons. A number of new points are made in this process. We also suggest a different ``effective low-energy Lagrangian'' for the theory which permits easy calculation of the low-energy scattering amplitudes. It correlates an exact mass formula of the system with the requirement of the Mermin-Wagner theorem.

A Comparison Of Self-Concepts Of Children Placed In A Pull-Out, Resource Center Versus An In-Class Support Model, Stephanie A. Scafario Apr 1997

A Comparison Of Self-Concepts Of Children Placed In A Pull-Out, Resource Center Versus An In-Class Support Model, Stephanie A. Scafario

Theses and Dissertations

Since inclusion is becoming a popular practice in many schools, its effects on children with learning disabilities must be considered. A child's self-concept is an important factor which often influences his success in academic, social, and emotional domains. Therefore, the effect that placement in a full day, in-class support classroom has on students with learning disabilities was investigated. A sample of 28 students with the classifications of perceptually impaired or neurologically impaired from grades 3, 4, and 5 participated in the study. Two groups were studied. One group received special education services through in-class support classrooms, while the other group …

Distribution Of Heavy Metals And Trace Elements In Soils Of Southwest Oregon, Rafiqul Alam Khandoker Apr 1997

Distribution Of Heavy Metals And Trace Elements In Soils Of Southwest Oregon, Rafiqul Alam Khandoker

Dissertations and Theses

Soil samples from 118 sites on 71 geologic units in southwest Oregon were collected and analyzed to determine the background concentrations of metals in soils of the region. Sites were chosen in areas that were relatively undisturbed by human activities. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approved total-recoverable method was used to recover metals from samples for analysis. The twenty six metals analyzed were: Ag, AI, As, Ba, Be, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, La, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Tl, V and Zn.

The Klamath Mountains followed by the Coast Range contain the …

The Development Of Grading Procedures For Students With Educational Disabilities Attending Regular Education Classes, Kathleen Sharp Sweeder Apr 1997

The Development Of Grading Procedures For Students With Educational Disabilities Attending Regular Education Classes, Kathleen Sharp Sweeder

Theses and Dissertations

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act states that children with disabilities must be educated, to the maximum extent possible and appropriate, in the regular education setting with non-handicapped children. The purpose of this study was to develop grading procedures for students with educational disabilities who attend regular education classes. Current district policies, the teachers' procedures for grading students, and the best practices presented in literature were investigated. Is grading students with educational disabilities in the regular education setting a concern for teachers? Should this school district develop a grading policy for students with educational disabilities? A teacher questionnaire was developed …

Instructional Lessons For Online Circulation Through The Use Of A Local Area Network In The School Library Media Center, Michael Shea Dennison

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this paper was to provide the researcher with the opportunity to develop valuable experience and knowledge regarding local area networks in school library media centers.

The researcher focused on the following areas: (1) school visitations to observe and acquire hands-on experiences on how local area networks are used in school and library media center situations, (2) an analysis of the researcher's individual library media center to conduct a comparison of the districts that school visitations took place in order to determine what is necessary to further develop a more adequate local area network, (3) the design and …

Integrating Multicultural Literature Into The Curriculum At Pyne Poynt Family School, Camden, New Jersey, Corlette Mays Apr 1997

Integrating Multicultural Literature Into The Curriculum At Pyne Poynt Family School, Camden, New Jersey, Corlette Mays

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis documents the importance of multicultural literature in educational environments and provides strategies for implementing the literature into the curriculum. Without the knowledge and the background of what's available in this particular genre and how it can used effectively, integration of materials into the curriculum cannot occur.

The African American and Hispanic American bibliographies were developed from the materials in the Pyne Poynt Family School Library to be used as teaching tools for the staff when developing resource based units of instruction and assignments. With this awareness, usage of the multicultural materials in the collection should increase over a …
