Closed Form Solution Of The Wave Equation For Piles, Don C. Warrington May 1997

Closed Form Solution Of The Wave Equation For Piles, Don C. Warrington

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis details the research into the one-dimensional wave equation as applied to piles used in the support of structures for civil works and driven using impact equipment. Since the 1950's, numerical methods, both finite difference and finite element, have been used extensively for the analysis of piles during driving and are the most accepted method of analysis for the determination of driving stresses, dynamic and static resistance of piles. In this thesis the wave equation is solved in a relatively simple closed form without recourse to numerical methods. A review of past efforts to solve the wave equation in …

Single Row Routing: Theoretical And Experimental Performance Evaluation, And New Heuristic Development, David A. Hysom May 1997

Single Row Routing: Theoretical And Experimental Performance Evaluation, And New Heuristic Development, David A. Hysom

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

The Single Row Routing Problem (SRRP) is an abstraction arising from real-world multilayer routing concerns. While NP-Complete, development of efficient SRRP routing heuristics are of vital concern to VLSI design. Previously, researchers have introduced various heuristics for SRRP; however, a comprehensive examination of SRRP behavior has been lacking.

We are particularly concerned with the street-congestion minimization constraint, which is agreed to be the constraint of greatest interest to industry. Several theorems stating lower bounds on street congestion are known. We show that these bounds are not tight in general, and argue they may be in error by at least 50% …

Advanced Brushless Spindle Motors In Computer Hard Disk Drives, Bao Trinh May 1997

Advanced Brushless Spindle Motors In Computer Hard Disk Drives, Bao Trinh

Master's Projects

The trend of increasing storage capacity and decreasing form factor is still a key challenge in hard disk drive (HDD) development. The next generation models of high performance hard drives will require spindle motors of higher speed with low cogging torque and ripples to reduce vibration and be able to pack more data tracks. The main causes of vibration in the spindle motor, which results in acoustic noise in the drive are the defects of rolling ball bearing and magnet-pole/stator-slot configurations. This thesis project focuses on the slotless stator and non-contact bearing in the spindle motor. Some fundamental aspects of …

Nickel Doping Of Boron–Carbon Alloy Films And Corresponding Fermi Level Shifts, Seong-Don Hwang, N. Remmes, Peter A. Dowben, D.N. Mcilroy

Peter Dowben Publications

We have grown nickel doped boron–carbon alloy films by the technique of plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition. The source gas closo-1,2-dicarbadodecaborane (orthocarborane) was used to grow the boron–carbon alloy, while nickelocene [Ni(C5H5)2] was used as the dopant source for nickel. With sufficient levels of Ni doping, diodes with characteristic tunnel diode behavior can be fabricated. The doping of nickel transformed a B5C p-type material, relative to lightly doped n-type silicon, to a strongly n-type material. In order to gain insight into the shift of the Fermi level of the …

Predicting Resistance And Stability Of Vegetation In Floodplains, David E. Werth Jr. May 1997

Predicting Resistance And Stability Of Vegetation In Floodplains, David E. Werth Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

To calculate flow or depth in a waterway, it is necessary to accurately determine the flow resistance. Past research has made considerable progress in predicting the roughness of nonvegetated uniform channels based on both theoretical and experimental investigations. However, to determine the flow resistance associated with vegetated compound flow channels and floodplains, the effects of the vegetation must be considered.

Recent advancements have led to greater understanding of the effects of partially submerged uniform vegetation in a waterway. However, to accurately determine flow resistance, it is imperative that the effects of both submerged and partially submerged vegetation be taken into …

Modelling Vegetation Cover Types Using Multiseasonal Remotely Sensed Data To Compare Ecotones At Multiple Spatial And Spectral Resolutions, Kimberly Patraw May 1997

Modelling Vegetation Cover Types Using Multiseasonal Remotely Sensed Data To Compare Ecotones At Multiple Spatial And Spectral Resolutions, Kimberly Patraw

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Army National Guard Bureau has implemented a cooperative project with Utah State University to help with the use, display, and evaluation of environmental data for maintaining land condition. Camp Grayling, Michigan, is comprised of deciduous and evergreen forest types. Use of remote sensing for classification has been limited in this region due to the difficulty of species-level classification using single-date remote-sensing techniques. Also, remote sensing has traditionally focused on mapping homogenous zones rather than vegetation boundaries, while one of the concerns for land managers is the nature of vegetation edges (ecotones).

This study analyzed each season and band from …

A Slow-Release Nitrogen Fertilizer: Ammonium-Loaded Clinoptilolite, T. Scott Perrin May 1997

A Slow-Release Nitrogen Fertilizer: Ammonium-Loaded Clinoptilolite, T. Scott Perrin

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Crops grown in sandy soils require frequent irrigation. As a result, nitrogen (N) fertilizers. such as ammonium sulfate((NH4)2SO4), are leached from the rooting zone of crops. This loss of N increases N fertilizer use and the potential for nitrate (NO3-) contamination of water. Ammonium-loaded clinoptilolite (NH4+-Cp) may reduce this N leaching, increase N fertilizer use-efficiency, and prevent NO3- contamination of water while sustaining normal crop growth.

The potential of NH4+-Cp as a N fertilizer was assessed in three leaching experiments without plants and …

An Investigation And Evaluation Of Promela/Spin As A Validation Tool For Asynchronous Concurrent Systems, Mark Bezdany May 1997

An Investigation And Evaluation Of Promela/Spin As A Validation Tool For Asynchronous Concurrent Systems, Mark Bezdany

Theses

Historically, the consequences of implementing faulty designs of concurrent/ distributed systems have been well known. There have many documented occasions where the little-known and unaccounted-for situations have caused the loss of human life and limb. This problem can be generalized, nowadays, to systems termed as mission critical. This term has arisen because individuals, businesses, and governments have come to depend on their correct operation. Failures in these systems can have such an adverse impact, that they are simply unacceptable. Although, due to the inherent complexity of these systems, preventing such failures can prove to be a very difficult task. PROMELA/SPIN …

Source-Aware Multidatabase Query Processing, Ee Peng Lim, Yinyan Cao, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang May 1997

Source-Aware Multidatabase Query Processing, Ee Peng Lim, Yinyan Cao, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We introduce a multidatabase model to represent the information that derives from different local databases. This model, known as Tuple-Source (TS) relational model, accommodates tuples from different local databases by attaching them with their source information in the global relations which are also known as TS-relations. In other words, a source attribute is implicit in every TS-relation. To manipulate the global relations, we have developed the TSSQL query language and implemented a distributed query processor to process such queries. In this paper, we report our distributed query processing architecture and algorithms. Our architecture consists of a query mediator and a …

Geochemical Characteristics And Correlations Within The Triassic-Jurassic Age Gabbs And Sunrise Formations Of West Central Nevada, Karen Elizabeth Boelling

Dissertations and Theses

Trace and minor element geochemistry was determined using Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis for ninety-six (96) limestone and calcareous siltstone samples from four stratigraphic sections in the Triassic-Jurassic age Gabbs and Sunrise formations of west central Nevada. Geochemical data support lithologic and faunal interpretations of relative basin positions of the Sunrise Formation stratigraphic sections, as well as basin development (including transgressive-regressive sequences) during deposition of the Gabbs and Sunrise formations at New York Canyon (Gabbs Valley Range). All sections show characteristics of both oceanic and continental island arc sources. Rare positive Eu anomalies relative to chondrites suggest that the Gabbs Formation …

Predictable File Access Latency For Multimedia, Dan Revel, Crispin Cowan, Dylan Mcnamee, Calton Pu, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Multimedia applications are sensitive to I/O latency and jitter when accessing data in secondary storage. Transparent adaptive prefetching (TAP) uses software feedback to provide multimedia applications with file system quality of service (QoS) guarantees. We are investigating how QoS requirements can be communicated and how they can be met by adaptive resource management. A preliminary test of adaptive prefetching is presented.
