Service-Learning And Evaluation: A Brief Review Of Issues And The Literature, Madeleine S. Hengel, Robert D. Shumer

Bibliographies

One of the most frequently requested topics for information at the National Service-Learning Cooperative Clearinghouse is evaluation. Practitioners want to know what to do and how to do it. Graduate students want to know what has been done and how they can do evaluation. Program administrators want to know how evaluation can assist them in making the case for and expanding service programs.

The good news is there is more than enough information available to answer all these requests. There are literally volumes of work on almost every conceivable aspect of evaluation. The bad news: There is too much information …

The Probability Density Function Of Ocean Surface Slopes And Its Effects On Radar Backscatter, Y. Liu, Xh Yan, W.T. Liu, P.A. Hwang May 1997

The Probability Density Function Of Ocean Surface Slopes And Its Effects On Radar Backscatter, Y. Liu, Xh Yan, W.T. Liu, P.A. Hwang

Faculty Publications

Based on Longuet-Higgins's theory of the probability distribution of wave amplitude and wave period and on some observations, a new probability density function (PDF) of ocean surface slopes is derived. It is f(zeta(x), zeta(y)) = n/2 pi(n - 1)sigma(u) sigma(c) x [1 + zeta(x)(2)/(n - 1)sigma(n)(2) + zeta(y)(2)/(n - 1)sigma(c)(2)](-(n + 2)/2) + skewness, where zeta(x) and zeta(y) are the slope components in upwind and crosswind directions, respectively; sigma(u)(2) and sigma(c)(2) are the corresponding mean-square slopes. The peakedness of slopes is generated by nonlinear wave-wave interactions in the range of gravity waves. The skewness of slopes is generated by nonlinear …

Dephasing In Hyper-Rayleigh Scattering From Organic Materials, S. F. Hubbard, Rolfe G. Petschek, Kenneth D. Singer May 1997

Dephasing In Hyper-Rayleigh Scattering From Organic Materials, S. F. Hubbard, Rolfe G. Petschek, Kenneth D. Singer

Faculty Scholarship

The spectral content of hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) was studied with solutions of disperse red-1 (DR1) in acetone at a specific fundamental wavelength. Dephasing can occur when the effective lifetime of the virtual state approaches a two-photon resonance. Experiments were developed that will measure all six observables in HRS by observing the scattering at 45°, continuously varying the phase of the fundamental by rotating a quarter-waveplate, and using another quarter-waveplate with a linear polarizer to analyze the harmonic. These experiments proved the validity of Kleinmann symmetry in near-resonant and far off-resonant regimes.

A Robust Unit Commitment Algorithm For Hydro-Thermal Optimization, Chao-An Li, Chung-Li Tseng, E. Hsu, R. B. Johnson, A. J. Svoboda

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a unit commitment algorithm which combines the Lagrangian relaxation (LR), sequential unit commitment (SUC), and optimal unit decommitment (UD) methods to solve a general hydro-thermal optimization (HTO) problem. The authors argue that this approach retains the advantages of the LR method while addressing the method''s observed weaknesses to improve overall algorithm performance and quality of solution. The proposed approach has been implemented in a version of PG&E''s HTO program, and test results are presented.

Bulletin 4328 - Soil Testing For Vegetable Production On The Coastal Plain, Ian Mcpharlin, Murray Hegney May 1997

Bulletin 4328 - Soil Testing For Vegetable Production On The Coastal Plain, Ian Mcpharlin, Murray Hegney

Bulletins 4000 -

Vegetable growers need to use fertiliser efficiently. Under-fertilising can reduce yield, which results in economic losses. Over-fertilising can reduce yield and contribute to nitrogen and phosphorus pollution of ground and surface waters. Concerns have been expressed that fertilisers applied to horticultural crops contribute to the phosphorus pollution of the rivers and estuaries of the west and south coast of Western Australia.

Soil testing is a technique that can be used by growers to make better fertiliser decisions. When soil tests show high levels of nutrients, growers can reduce fertiliser application for the current crop. This should enable growers to maintain …

Valve Train Natural Frequency Measurement And Analysis, Cynthia Greene May 1997

Valve Train Natural Frequency Measurement And Analysis, Cynthia Greene

Theses

Natural frequencies are very important characteristics of a valve train system. From the measured natural frequencies of a valve train the following can be determined: will the system have acceptable dynamic behavior, is one valve train system design superior to another, and is a dynamic model of the system properly setup. The three most important modes of vibration of a valve train system are the fundamental mode of vibration of the entire linkage (system natural frequency), translation of the valve spring, and torsion of the camshaft. Valve trains are nonlinear systems due to varying system geometry throughout the lift event. …

Microevolution In Island Water Snakes, Richard B. King, R. Lawson May 1997

Microevolution In Island Water Snakes, Richard B. King, R. Lawson

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Examples presented demonstrate that evolutionary outcomes depend not only on those processes that operate within populations(e,g.,selection) but also on interactions (via gene flow) among populations. Factors affecting rates of gene flow are likely to produce evolutionary change even when within-population processes remain constant. These examples also illustrate that the combined effects of selection and gene flow are not restricted to organisms found on islands like those in western Lake Erie but may be important in any organism whose distribution spans a range of habitat types. As human activities produce changes in habitat characteristics and distribution (e.g., by fragmenting formerly continuous …

Depiction Of Portraiture, Likeness Vs. Representation, Mario Guarriello

Theses

So the dreaded 'Thesis Paper' begins. I hope this paper can help you, the reader, understand the thought process behind this body of work. I have always felt that my artwork should stand on its own legs, unsupported by flowery, artspeak. This body of work is completely different from anything I have attempted before. This paper is as much an experiment as the work itself. I have divided this paper into three major sections; Looking Back, The Thesis Itself & Looking Ahead. I have found that this thesis has not only become about the last year, but my career as …

Channel Narrowing Of The Green River Near Green River, Utah: History, Rates, And Processes Of Narrowing, Tyler M. Allread May 1997

Channel Narrowing Of The Green River Near Green River, Utah: History, Rates, And Processes Of Narrowing, Tyler M. Allread

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Previous scientific research has documented channel narrowing on the Green River near Green River, Utah, but the exact timing, rates, and causal mechanisms of that narrowing have been the source of disagreement in the scientific literature. This thesis demonstrates that the Green River has narrowed in two separate periods during the last 100 years. The narrowing is driven primarily by changes in the hydrologic regime and not by the invasion of saltcedar. The channel narrowed between 1930 and 1938, when a shift from wetter than normal conditions to a period of draught led to a reduction in river discharge. Channel …

Theses (Pre-2016)

Current interest within the laboratory involves the synthesis and study of transition metal complexes using the poly(pyrazolyl)borates as ligands and to study them further as process catalysts in coal liquefaction. The synthesis of potassium dihydrobis(pyrazolyl)borate with zirconium tetrabromide, in a stoichiometric ratio of 1:2 within a nitrogen filled glove (dry) box, formed the following complex: ZrBr4 + 2 K[H2B(C3H3N2)2] 80mL CH2.Q!2_> ZrBr2[H2B(C3H3N2)2]2 + 2 KBr The dibromobis[dihydrobis(pyrazolyl)borate]zirconium(IV) complex was then characterized using elemental analyses for the percent Carbon, Hydrogen and Nitrogen, Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) and proton (1 H) NMR. This 1 2 complex will be evaluated as a catalyst …

Closed Form Solution Of The Wave Equation For Piles, Don C. Warrington May 1997

Closed Form Solution Of The Wave Equation For Piles, Don C. Warrington

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis details the research into the one-dimensional wave equation as applied to piles used in the support of structures for civil works and driven using impact equipment. Since the 1950's, numerical methods, both finite difference and finite element, have been used extensively for the analysis of piles during driving and are the most accepted method of analysis for the determination of driving stresses, dynamic and static resistance of piles. In this thesis the wave equation is solved in a relatively simple closed form without recourse to numerical methods. A review of past efforts to solve the wave equation in …
