Empowerment In Student Teaching Through Community Service Learning, Rahima C. Wade Jul 1997

Empowerment In Student Teaching Through Community Service Learning, Rahima C. Wade

Higher Education

The student teaching experience is probably the most influential phase of preservice teachers' development within a teacher education program (Burstein, 1992; Griffin, 1989). In particular, the relationship between the cooperating teacher and student teacher plays a critical role in student teachers' success. Preservice teachers are generally instructed to "do as I do" by their cooperating teachers. Thus, student teachers often find little opportunity to try out strategies they have learned in their university methods courses unless the practices are already in place in cooperating teachers' classrooms. In addition, few researchers have attempted to discern how to enhance preservice teachers' abilities …

Using The Simplex Code To Construct Relative Difference Sets In 2-Groups, James A. Davis, Surinder K. Sehgal Jul 1997

Using The Simplex Code To Construct Relative Difference Sets In 2-Groups, James A. Davis, Surinder K. Sehgal

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

Relative Difference Sets with the parameters (2a, 2b, 2a, 2a-b) have been constructed many ways (see [2], [3], [5], [6], and [7] for examples). This paper modifies an example found in [1] to construct a family of relative difference sets in 2-groups that gives examples for b = 2 and b = 3 that have a lower rank than previous examples. The Simplex code is used in the construction.

Relative Motion Between The Caribbean And North American Plates And Related Boundary Zone Deformation From A Decade Of Gps Observations, Timothy H. Dixon, Frederic Farina, Charles Demets, Pamela Jansma, Paul Mann, Eric Calais Jul 1997

Relative Motion Between The Caribbean And North American Plates And Related Boundary Zone Deformation From A Decade Of Gps Observations, Timothy H. Dixon, Frederic Farina, Charles Demets, Pamela Jansma, Paul Mann, Eric Calais

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements in 1986, 1994, and 1995 at sites in Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Grand Turk define the velocity of the Caribbean plate relative to North America. The data show eastward motion of the Caribbean plate at a rate of 21 ± 1 mm/yr (1 standard error ) in the vicinity of southern Dominican Republic, a factor of 2 higher than the NUVEL-1A plate motion model prediction of 11 ± 3 mm/yr. Independent measurements on San Andres Island, and an Euler vector derived from these data, also suggest a rate that is much higher than …

Simulations Of The Atlantic Ocean With A Free Surface Sigma Coordinate Ocean Model, Tal Ezer, George L. Mellor Jul 1997

Simulations Of The Atlantic Ocean With A Free Surface Sigma Coordinate Ocean Model, Tal Ezer, George L. Mellor

CCPO Publications

A sigma coordinate, free surface numerical model with turbulence dynamics has been implemented for the Atlantic Ocean and the Greenland Sea, from 80°S to 80°N. It is driven at the surface by monthly mean sea surface temperature and wind stress climatologies and is executed for 30 years. This is the first time that a model of this type, previously used mostly for coastal and regional simulations, has been implemented for the entire Atlantic Ocean and run for a long period of time. The model horizontal circulation, thermohaline overturning circulation, and meridional heat fluxes are described; the results are compared with …

Model Of Flexural Fatigue Damage Accumulation For Cortical Bone, L. V. Griffin, J. C. Gibeling, R. B. Martin, V. A. Gibson, S. M. Stover Jul 1997

Model Of Flexural Fatigue Damage Accumulation For Cortical Bone, L. V. Griffin, J. C. Gibeling, R. B. Martin, V. A. Gibson, S. M. Stover

Biomedical Engineering

Analytical models that predict modulus degradation in cortical bone subjected to uniaxial fatigue loading in tension and compression are presented. On the basis of experimental observations, damage was modeled as self-limiting for tension but not for compression. These mechanistic uniaxial damage models were then developed into a model for flexural fatigue of cortical bone based on laminated beam theory. The unknown coefficients in the uniaxial damage models were obtained by successfully fitting the resulting equations to uniaxial fatigue data from the literature on human cortical bone in tension and compression. Then, the predictions of the flexural model for the behavior …

Technology, Transactions Costs, And Investor Welfare: Is A Motley Fool Born Every Minute?, Lynn A. Stout Jul 1997

Technology, Transactions Costs, And Investor Welfare: Is A Motley Fool Born Every Minute?, Lynn A. Stout

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Computer network technology promises to revolutionize the secondary securities market and particularly to reduce dramatically the marginal costs associated with trading corporate equities. Lowering transactions costs usually is presumed to increase trader welfare. Certain unique characteristics of the secondary securities market suggest, however, that reducing the marginal costs associated with trading stocks may have the perverse and counterintuitive effect of decreasing investor welfare. Policymakers should consider this possibility as they respond to the market's rapid evolution.

Practical Computer Applications For Land Use Planning And Analysis, Roger K. Dahlstrom Jul 1997

Practical Computer Applications For Land Use Planning And Analysis, Roger K. Dahlstrom

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This address presents two computer applications designed to assist in land use planning for individual sites and for entire planning areas. The site capacity model allows the user to generate a reasonably accurate analysis of development potential for an individual parcel of land given basic Information regarding proposed or prevailing zoning regulations. The land capacity model provides a means for developing land use simulations including likely public service demands and selected environmental impacts. The author notes that land use simulation can be an effective tool for minimizing internal inconsistencies in development regulations and for evaluating the impacts of the large …

Auslander Systems, K. N. Haddad, Aimee S. A. Johnson Jul 1997

Auslander Systems, K. N. Haddad, Aimee S. A. Johnson

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

The authors generalize the dynamical system constructed by J. Auslander in 1959, resulting in perhaps the simplest family of examples of minimal but not strictly ergodic systems. A characterization of unique ergodicity and mean-L-stability is given. The new systems are also shown to have zero topological entropy and fail to be weakly rigid. Some results on the set of idempotents in the enveloping semigroup are also achieved.

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

Experimental and theoretical studies are reported on the inelastic (Raman) scattering of wavelength-selected polarized x rays from the K edge of gas-phase chlorine molecules. The polarized emission spectra exhibit prominent nondipole features consequent of phase variations of the incident and emitted radiation over molecular dimensions, as predicted by the Kramers-Heisenberg scattering formalism. Issues pursuant to the detection of core-hole localization by resonant Raman scattering from homonuclear diatomic molecules are critically examined. [S0031-9007(97)03486-8]

Teenage Pregnancy: Correlates Of Sexual Behavior And Overview Of Prevention, Intervention, And Local Programs, Janice Rollins Monteiro Jul 1997

Teenage Pregnancy: Correlates Of Sexual Behavior And Overview Of Prevention, Intervention, And Local Programs, Janice Rollins Monteiro

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

It is doubtful that any woman who has become pregnant and delivered a child did not experience some level of anxiety or frustration. It is also not likely that these women did not have anything else occurring simultaneously in their lives, such as work, social, and family commitments. Pregnancy and the expectancy of bringing a new life into the world inherently carry a certain amount of stress and uncertainty. Finding oneself in this situation has an incredible impact when a young woman has perhaps not even fully developed herself, and is faced with the challenge of raising a child.

Dealing With Evidentiary Deficiency, Richard D. Friedman Jul 1997

Dealing With Evidentiary Deficiency, Richard D. Friedman

Cardozo Law Review

Lack of information distorts litigation. Claims or defenses that a party might prove easily, or that might even be undisputed, in a world of perfect information can be difficult or impossible to prove in the real world of imperfect information. Some information deficiencies are inevitable, at least in the sense that we could not eliminate them without incurring undue social costs. In some cases, however, a person's conduct may have caused the deficiency. More generally, the person may have had available a reasonable alternative course of conduct that would have eliminated, or at least mitigated, the deficiency.

Burden Of Proof And Estimation Of Drug Quantities Under The Federal Sentencing Guidelines, Johan Bring, Colin Aitken Jul 1997

Burden Of Proof And Estimation Of Drug Quantities Under The Federal Sentencing Guidelines, Johan Bring, Colin Aitken

Cardozo Law Review

According to the United States Federal Sentencing Guidelines (the "FSG"), a person convicted for handling drugs should not only be sentenced for the quantity seized but also for the total quantity handled as "part of the same course of conduct or common scheme or plan as the offense of conviction." Hence, judges, probation officers, and lawyers often need to estimate the total quantity of drugs handled. The evidence on which to base such an estimation, however, differs greatly in both characteristic and quality. The types of evidence could include: the quantity of drugs seized, information concerning quantities handled …

A Synthesized Methodology For Eliciting Expert Judgment For Addressing Uncertainty In Decision Analysis, Richard W. Monroe Jul 1997

A Synthesized Methodology For Eliciting Expert Judgment For Addressing Uncertainty In Decision Analysis, Richard W. Monroe

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation describes the development, refinement, and demonstration of an expert judgment elicitation methodology. The methodology has been developed by synthesizing the literature across several social science and scientific fields. The foremost consideration in the methodology development has been to incorporate elements that are based on reasonable expectations for the human capabilities of the user, the expert in this case.

Many methodologies exist for eliciting assessments for uncertain events. These are frequently elicited in probability form. This methodology differs by incorporating a qualitative element as a beginning step for the elicitation process. The qualitative assessment is a more reasonable way …
