Literacy Development Of Rural Appalachian Five Year Olds, Connie Green
Literacy Development Of Rural Appalachian Five Year Olds, Connie Green
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
As a teacher and researcher in a kindergarten classroom, I was interested in documenting the literacy development of several of the children in my class to determine the impact of the social and cultural environment. In the early 1980's, Heath (1983) researched the language and literacy development of three cultural groups in the Piedmont Carolinas. Her work revealed distinct differences in approaches to language and literacy among working class Anglo-Americans, working class African-Americans, and middle class Anglo-Americans. The observations discussed in this paper seek to ascertain whether there are unique approaches to early literacy among children reared in a rural …

So much depends upon a rope in Mobile, Alabama. To hang Michael Donald, Henry Hays and James "Tiger" Knowles tied up "a piece of nylon rope about twenty feet long, yellow nylon." They borrowed the rope from Frank Cox, Hays's brother-in-law. Cox "went out in the back" of his mother's "boatshed, or something like that, maybe it was in the lodge." He "got a rope," climbed into the front seat of Hays's Buick Wildcat, and handed it to Knowles sitting in the back seat. So much depends upon a noose. Knowles "made a hangman's noose out of the rope," thirteen …

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
Formal assessments have long served as our society's most privileged indices of student learning and school accountability. Hence, both learning and school effectiveness have often been equated with standardized test scores and/or grades. The privilege accorded to external assessment has tended to minimize the role of teachers and, even more dramatically, students in the assessment process. Assessments are external tools that are administered to teachers and students. For teachers, this often leads to a tension between their curricular goals and the assessment measures they must use in the classroom (Mitchell, 1992; Pearson, DeStefano, & Garcia, in press). Students are rarely …

Comparative Power Of Three Author-Attribution Techniques For Differentiating Authors, John B. Archer, John L. Hilton, G. Bruce Schaalje
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Over the last twenty years, various objective author-attribution techniques have been applied to the English Book of Mormon in order to shed light on the question of multiple authorship of Book of Mormon texts. Two methods, one based on rates of use of noncontextual words and one based on word-pattern ratios, measure patterns consistent with multiple authorship in the Book of Mormon. Another method, based on vocabulary-richness measures, suggests that only one author is involved. These apparently contradictory results are reconciled by showing that for texts of known authorship, the method based on vocabulary-richness measures is not as powerful in …

A Short Addition To Length: Some Relative Frequencies Of Circumstantial Structures, Brian D. Stubbs
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
In previous articles I have discussed the nature and prominence of certain linguistic structures in the Book of Mormon that are typical of hal-clauses translated from Hebrew or Egyptian. This article compares the frequencies of those structures in three works produced through the instrumentality of Joseph Smith: the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, only the first of which is a translation from an ancient Near Eastern language. The results of this preliminary investigation into styles and these linguistic structures as found in these three works …

Non-Literate Students In Adult Beginning English As A Second Language Classrooms - A Case Study, Sandra Lynn Banke
Non-Literate Students In Adult Beginning English As A Second Language Classrooms - A Case Study, Sandra Lynn Banke
Dissertations and Theses
The development of literacy in English is facilitated by second language students' ability to read in their first language, particularly if that language employs a Roman alphabet. These students' literacy abilities may also influence their development of oral proficiency when their primary instructional environment is the classroom. Yet there have been few successful studies of non-literate students' progress, behaviors and learning preferences in classrooms with literate students. This is primarily because the transient nature of non-literate students' attendance in formal learning environments results in sample sizes too small for experimental research with reliable generalizations.
The purpose of the present study …

Learning From Others: Service-Learning In Costa Rica And Indonesia, David D. Williams, William D. Eiserman
Learning From Others: Service-Learning In Costa Rica And Indonesia, David D. Williams, William D. Eiserman
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
Calls are increasingly sounded for universities to better address their communities' and students' needs through service, as well as research and teaching. This article invites policy makers to re-examine university service, research, and teaching responsibilities by reflecting on roles service-learning plays in universities in Indonesia and Costa Rica. We conclude that service-learning plays a critical role and a key to expanding service-learning for students and understanding the utility of such a policy change is increased faculty involvement. Until more faculty explore the "why" and "how" of service-learning, research and teaching will dominate the university agenda.
