The Home-School Connection: Parental Influences On A Child's English Second Language Acquisition, Catharine Jauhiainen May 1997

The Home-School Connection: Parental Influences On A Child's English Second Language Acquisition, Catharine Jauhiainen

Dissertations and Theses

Few would dispute the tremendous impact that parents have on the intellectual, emotional, and social development of their children. An important issue in child second language acquisition is whether, or to what extent, parental attitudes and behaviors are associated with the success of language minority children in elementary ESL and mainstream classroom settings. The effects of parental educational values and expectations, and parental perception of ability to assist in the educational journey of their offspring, have been the focus of much research regarding majority language children. However, research exploring the beliefs and behaviors of language minority parents and their relationship …

Training For Transracial Adoptive Parents And Professionals Who Care For Transracially Adopted Children: The Roles Of Identity Formation And Self-Esteem In Successful Placements, Robert L. O'Connor

Theses and Graduate Projects

This thesis examines the roles of identity formation and self-esteem development as interwoven determining factors of successful transracial adoptive placements. Transracially adopted children have the arduous and conflicting tasks of 1) conforming to the family culture, and 2) developing identities that are racially different from those who parent them. The goal of such a placement is for the transracially adopted child(ren) and the adopting family to join together to form a new biracial and bicultural family unit. Using a conceptual framework encompassing Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, Erikson's Stages of Development, the Dual Perspective, and the Ecosystem Perspective, the author develops …

The Poetics Of John Keats In "The Fall Of Hyperion, A Dream", Amy A. Zenger May 1997

The Poetics Of John Keats In "The Fall Of Hyperion, A Dream", Amy A. Zenger

Dissertations and Theses

The Hyperion poems are Keats's epics. Like Wordsworth in The Excursion, in these poems Keats attempts to write an epic of the unexplored regions of the human mind. Unlike Wordsworth, however, Keats uses the narrative vocabulary of Hellenic myth--a vocabulary already at hand--but alters it to suit his own purposes. As they are concerned with the mind, these poems deal with the same issues that characterize contemporary debates about the relation of mind to language, issues that illuminate what these poems are about as much as they illuminate Keats's own use of language and theory of poetry.

Japanese Intelligibility And Comprehensibility Assessments Of Different English Accents, David Michael Levin May 1997

Japanese Intelligibility And Comprehensibility Assessments Of Different English Accents, David Michael Levin

Dissertations and Theses

As the result of historical events and the adaptive nature of the language itself, English is generally accepted today as the world's international language. While various countries have adapted the English language to serve their own specific needs, the question of whether or not the changes made to English in these countries, for example phonological, will still enable the language to be intelligible in the international arena. If English is to be the de facto world language, then international intelligibility should be an important goal.

For this research, 211 Japanese university students were asked to assess the intelligibility and comprehensibility …
