Psychic Unity Constraints Upon Successful Intercultural Communication, James M. Donovan, Brian A. Rundle
Psychic Unity Constraints Upon Successful Intercultural Communication, James M. Donovan, Brian A. Rundle
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
This article begins with the unchallenged assertion that intercultural communication episodes are necessarily imperfect. The disciplinary corpus reflects the correct assumption that much of this failure is attributable to the lock of various competencies on the part of the communicants. Experts become vague, however, where the line should be drawn, if at all, beyond which increased competency will not yield improved communication.
The principle of psychic unity assures us that there will be some experiences (not many, but some) which are so far removed from the ordinary processes of categorization and conceptualization that the raw data cannot be encapsulated faithfully …
Managerial Emotionality In Chinese Factories, Kathleen J. Krone, Ling Chen, Diane Kay Sloan, Llinda M. Gallant
Managerial Emotionality In Chinese Factories, Kathleen J. Krone, Ling Chen, Diane Kay Sloan, Llinda M. Gallant
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
Managerial emotion may be experienced and handled differently when reason and emotion are understood to be continuously (e.g., Eastern cultures) rather than dichotomously (e.g., Western cultures) related. Using a social constructionist perspective, this study investigated emotionality among directors from 48 different factories in the People’s Republic of China. Social, moral, and material/economic situations were identified as sources of pleasant and unpleasant managerial emotional experience. Thought-feeling continuities were identified in how the managers described their emotional experiences. Both pleasant and unpleasant emotions were experienced very intensely and were managed in ways that both conformed to and departed from cultural ideals. Managerial …

Literacy Development: Teacher/Student Interaction In A Whole Language Classroom, Nadine C. Tepper
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study on literacy development within a whole language classroom focuses on the reading and writing experiences of five second grade students. The classroom teacher was also a participant in the study and practiced various whole language teaching methods in the teaching of reading and writing. The data gathered for this study were descriptive fieldnotes developed from the observations, in-depth interviews of the participants, documents from the site, and writing samples.
The portraits of the students described specific learning behaviors and styles that came forth as they read books and wrote stories in journals. The portraits also defined the …
Four Girls Respond To Young Adult Horror Fiction, Betty Silliman
Four Girls Respond To Young Adult Horror Fiction, Betty Silliman
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study provides insight into the separate reading experience of four adolescent girls as each engaged in the reading and discussion of a popular, self-selected young adult horror novel. The analysis and interpretation of data focused on the appeal of texts and the sociological implications of the reading experience. While questions regarding the appeal of young adult horror fiction grew from work with adolescent female horror readers, the social dimension of the inquiry stemmed from concerns of critical literacy theorists with regard to the ideological content of texts and its potential to shape readers into accepting dominant views.

Generational Dependency And Elderly Care : A Psychological Interpretation Of Cultural Norms And Exchange, Ying Yi Hong, William T. Liu
Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series
ln spite of the complexity of such dynamic relationships in the caregiving system, the literature shows that dominant research paradigm has places elderly care in the framework of a simple, unqualified social exchange theory. The primary goal of this paper to critique research approach based on the social exchange theory. First, we wish to discuss how the exchange theory lies at the heart of the debate between the proponents and opponents of having family members as the primary care providers for elderly. We wish to review the basic assumptions that social exchange theory holds about caregiving relationships. Second, we suggest …

This problem has been the focus of the debate between communitarians and liberals for the past two decades. The research problem will be to discover workable definitions of community and liberalism which have been plagued with multiple interpretations throughout the debate.
The method of this thesis will be to first frame in the environment of the original problem. The second chapter will address the precedents set by …
Theoretical Foundation For Relationship Construct In Information Modeling – Relation Element Theory, Keng Siau
Theoretical Foundation For Relationship Construct In Information Modeling – Relation Element Theory, Keng Siau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Information modeling is a critical process in software development. One of the key constructs in information modeling is the relationship construct. Though commonly used, the relationship construct is poorly defined and lacks a strong theoretical foundation. The objectives of this research are to define and classify the various relationships based on a theory in linguistic known as the relation element theory. This paper describes the theory, relates the theory to the relationship construct, and discusses the implication of the theory on the relationship construct.

The Arabian Bountiful Discovered? Evidence For Nephi's Bountiful, Warren P. Aston
The Arabian Bountiful Discovered? Evidence For Nephi's Bountiful, Warren P. Aston
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
According to the Book of Mormon, a land named “Bountiful” was a fertile site on the Arabian Peninsula with timber, fresh water, and ore where Nephi built a ship to carry Lehi’s group to the New World. In the seemingly barren land of the southern Arabian peninsula, a site that appears to correspond to the description in Nephi’s record has been identified on the remote southern coast of the country of Oman. Kharfot may not be the exact location of Bountiful, but its discovery does show that a place matching the criteria for Bountiful does exist.

ImageTcl is an new system which provides powerful Tcl/Tk based media scripting capabilities similar to those of the ViewSystem and Rivl in a unique environment that allows rapid prototyping and development of new components in the C++ language. Powerful user tools automate the creation of new components as well as the addition of new data types and file formats. Applications using ImageTcl at the Dartmouth Experimental Visualization Laboratory (DEVLAB) include multiple stream media data analysis, automatic image annotation, and image sequence motion analysis. ImageTcl combines the high speed of compiled languages with the testing and parameterization advantages of scripting languages.

Teaching Phonetic-Ideograph Rules To English Speaking Students Of Chinese, Jillian Ji-Fen Tsai
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the teaching of phoneticideograph rules would improve the memorization and character retention abilities of English-speaking students of Chinese. Two groups participated in the experiment, an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group was taught using the Concentrated Character Recognition Method, which employs the teaching of phonetic-ideograph rules, while the other group was taught using a more traditional teaching approach, without receiving instruction on phonetic-ideographic rules. Subjects were enrolled in the first-year university Chinese class. All subjects were pre-tested before the treatment. Data of subjects who scored much higher than …
