Auditory-Verbal Therapy : A Comprehensive Approach For Children Who Are Hearing Impaired, Allison Husarik Jan 1997

Auditory-Verbal Therapy : A Comprehensive Approach For Children Who Are Hearing Impaired, Allison Husarik

Honors Capstones

The focus of this project was auditory-verbal practice with children who are hearing impaired. Auditory-verbal practice is a comprehensive approach which teaches the child with a hearing impairment to make maximum use of his or her amplified residual hearing. Emphasis is placed on early identification and ongoing audiological evaluation and aural habilitation. Parents and auditory-verbal professionals then work together to teach the child to listen, to process verbal language, and to speak. As a result, the child acquires the ability to communicate through speech. After learning about auditory-verbal therapy through class work and observation, I became particularly interested in learning …

Impact Of Amateur Educational Video Viewing On Language Acquisition Of Preschool Children, Jennifer L. Radcliffe Jan 1997

Impact Of Amateur Educational Video Viewing On Language Acquisition Of Preschool Children, Jennifer L. Radcliffe

Masters Theses

Child language-learning is a complex process that varies for each individual child. Researchers have found that children learn from viewing professional television programs specifically designed for children, such as Sesame Street. Professional television programming principles can be adopted to produce amateur educational videos. Video may also be a viable option to provide repetitive models to improve vocabulary acquisition within speech-language pathology. The purpose of this study was to measure the effect of direct stimulation with amateur educational videos on a child's general and specific vocabulary acquisition.

A six-week experiment included an initial two-week control period, a two-week experimental period …

The Modern Uses Of Ancient Law, Richard A. Epstein Jan 1997

The Modern Uses Of Ancient Law, Richard A. Epstein

Faculty Articles

This lecture follows that tradition in part by paying close attention to both the substantive and interpretive rules found in Roman law, giving illustrations of both. It seeks to show the influence that these early formulations have had on modem law, often in quite unexpected ways. The first part is devoted to Roman principles on the acquisition of property and their relationship to disputes of more modem vintage. The second part looks, more briefly to be sure, at questions of constitutional interpretation and suggests that ancient techniques often supply the necessary tertium quid between excessively rigid versions of the "plain …

The Architecture Of The First Amendment And The Case Of Workplace Harassment, Cynthia Estlund Jan 1997

The Architecture Of The First Amendment And The Case Of Workplace Harassment, Cynthia Estlund

Faculty Articles

There is a lively debate within First Amendment scholarship over the constitutional status of discriminatory verbal harassment, particularly in the workplace. A number of decisions finding harassment liability under Title VII have turned in whole or in part on what we would ordinarily recognize as "speech"; yet few courts have seriously considered the relevance of the First Amendment in this regard. The commentators have stepped into the judicial vacuum with gusto. Some commentators have argued that Title VII's harassment law, as applied to nearly all speech, abridges the freedom of speech protected by the First Amendment. Others have defended harassment …

The Basic Communication Course: Options For Accommodating Non-Native Speakers Of Mainstream North American English, Donald L. Rubin, Donald Turk Jan 1997

The Basic Communication Course: Options For Accommodating Non-Native Speakers Of Mainstream North American English, Donald L. Rubin, Donald Turk

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article outlines the various options for basic speech communication classes for non-native speakers of mainstream North American English (NNSMNAE), focusing on the introductory class in public speaking in the U.S. A series of interviews were conducted with twelve NNSMNAE students who had enrolled in mainstream public speaking courses. When NNSMNAE students enter U.S. English as a second language (ESL) programs, their initial oral communication needs are usually associated with everyday world communications tasks like navigating the campus or the supermarket. It appears that the norm for NNSMNAE will be to approach a basic course in speech communication with little …

Declarative Derivation: A Network Morphology Account Of Russian Word Formation With Reference To Nouns Denoting 'Person'., Andrew R. Hippisley Jan 1997

Declarative Derivation: A Network Morphology Account Of Russian Word Formation With Reference To Nouns Denoting 'Person'., Andrew R. Hippisley

Linguistics Faculty Publications

Studies on derivational morphology often assume a procedural view, emphasizing the journey from morphologically simple to morphologically complex word. We present a declarative approach with the focus on the relationship between two morphologically connected words.  This more static approach enables us to better locate the generalizations present in a derivational system.  We test this approach on a specific body of data, namely the formation of nouns denoting ‘person’ in Russian.

After introducing Network Morphology, the declarative framework within which we base our account, and the Russian data we will be investigating, we provide as theoretical background to our proposed analysis …

A Country Within A Country: Redrawing Borders On The Post-Colonial Sovereign State, Suzan Dionne Balz Jan 1997

A Country Within A Country: Redrawing Borders On The Post-Colonial Sovereign State, Suzan Dionne Balz

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

This Essay seeks to identify the conflict that exists between the demands for self-governance by Canada's First Nations and the interests of the Canadian state. The author elucidates this conflict by identifying two major differences between the perspectives of Canada's First Nations' demands for self-governance and the interests of the Canadian state: the privileging of the collective versus the privileging of the individual, and the two very different notions of "territory." The author concludes that the doctrine of sovereign statehood as developed out of European Nationalism stands as an obstacle to the self-determination of non-western peoples such as the First …

Cultivating A Seedling Charter: South Africa's Court Grows Its Constitution, Margaret A. Burnham Jan 1997

Cultivating A Seedling Charter: South Africa's Court Grows Its Constitution, Margaret A. Burnham

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

As South Africa emerges from the vestiges of apartheid, its Constitutional Court struggles to develop a jurisprudence that reflects the lasting ideals of a constitutional democracy. This Article examines the Court's use of international and foreign law in developing a unique form of constitutional jurisprudence. It argues that the Constitutional Court is in the process of developing an innovative form of decision-making that effectively combines domestically derived principles of justice with those developed in the international forum. This Article concludes that reliable methods of adjudication are firmly entrenched in the South African legal system and that its constitutional jurisprudence should …

Primo Levi, Ilona Klein Jan 1997

Primo Levi, Ilona Klein

Faculty Publications

Chemistry and literature, viewed by most people as widely different subjects, come together in the works of Primo Levi, an Italian Jew who was both a professional chemist and a professional writer. Levi said that he wanted to fill the gap between the imaginative world of literature and the analytical world of science. Believing such a gap absurd, he was never daunted by the purported incompatibility between the two fields of knowledge. Levi's literary work is also marked by his experience in Auschwitz's concentration camp, where he was interned from February 1944 to January 1945. Through his characteristically clear and …

"Time Is One": The Temporal Aspect Of The Hopi Language And Its Experimental Application In Postmodernist Novels, Peter Buru Jan 1997

"Time Is One": The Temporal Aspect Of The Hopi Language And Its Experimental Application In Postmodernist Novels, Peter Buru

Masters Theses

My thesis examines the relationship between the temporal aspects of the language of the Hopi Indians, based on Benjamin Lee Whorf’s linguistic analyses, and postmodernist narrative theory. Within postmodernism itself, the study focuses on the narratives' handling of time and space, as illustrated by the following novels: Sexing the Cherry by Jeanette Winterson; Time's Arrow by Martin Amis; Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.; and Almanac of the Dead by Leslie Marmon Silko.

The study investigates how these postmodernist novels experiment with the application of a timeless temporal scheme. This scheme originates from what I refer to as Benjamin Lee Whorf’s …

In Search Of The Meandering Absolute: The Prints Of Mitzi Humphrey, Mitzi Humphrey Jan 1997

In Search Of The Meandering Absolute: The Prints Of Mitzi Humphrey, Mitzi Humphrey

Theses and Dissertations

Art is more than just a bridge to (or a reflection of) the natural world; it is a natural force in itself. The author is a strong advocate of "artist's prints," prints which are conceived and printed by the artist. She believes that there is a natural sequence of actions and thoughts which cannot be approximated by the substitution of an artist/printer collaboration unless the artist is truly involved with the printer or assistant in every step of the decision-making and mark-making processes.

The prints of this series are not about realistic pictorial space; they are about interior space--that of …

Race-Based Affirmative Action And International Law, Jordan J. Paust Jan 1997

Race-Based Affirmative Action And International Law, Jordan J. Paust

Michigan Journal of International Law

International law, which is part of the supreme law of the United States, provides significant affirmation of the legal propriety of race-based affirmative action. At least two human rights treaties ratified by the United States are particularly useful in identifying the acceptability of certain measures of affirmative action as well as the duty to take special and concrete measures of affirmative action in certain circumstances. Such a duty is not merely based in supreme federal law, relevant to decision-making at federal and state levels, but is also contained in federal policy relevant to the constitutional precept of federal preemption. Treaty-based …

The Role Of National Courts In International Trade Relations, Meinhard Hilf Jan 1997

The Role Of National Courts In International Trade Relations, Meinhard Hilf

Michigan Journal of International Law

Part I of this article identifies and analyzes some modern trends in judicial review in the area of international relations. Section Part II then examines and briefly discusses the existence of judicial review for both national and international levels of protection and the possibilities for linking the two. A major part, Part III, is devoted to the specific role of national courts within the WTO system. Finally, Part IV draws conclusions and suggests some means for improving the judicial review offered by national courts and for linking them to the interstate dispute settlement on the international level.
