Block Scheduling: From Possibility To Reality?, Frederic M. Muse Dec 1997

Block Scheduling: From Possibility To Reality?, Frederic M. Muse

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines teacher practices and student learning as perceived by teachers within public high schools that have implemented block scheduling. Comparisons are made between the possibilities advanced by block scheduling advocates and the actual results as interpreted from the data gathered. Comparisons are made between teaching and learning with the traditional schedule and the manner in which it takes place with block scheduling. Open-ended questionnaires were developed for use with voluntary participants who had worked with traditional scheduling and now taught with some form of block scheduling. Participants recorded observations based solely upon personal perceptions of experiences with students …

Mission Statements In Decision Making In Doctoral-Granting Universities: Views Of Administrators And State Governing Board Members, Stacie S. Varnson Dec 1997

Mission Statements In Decision Making In Doctoral-Granting Universities: Views Of Administrators And State Governing Board Members, Stacie S. Varnson

Theses and Dissertations

Although most organizations have a statement of purpose, often referred to as a mission statement, little empirical research exists to demonstrate how these statements are used in the decision-making process. Also, although some have proposed lists of key elements to be included in a mission statement for optimal usefulness, very little research exists that tests specific elements for their usefulness. The purpose of this research was to examine how administrators use mission statements in decision making and the effect of content of the statement on usefulness.

The research population consisted of presidents and vice-presidents of eight upper-midwestern doctoral-granting public universities, …

Quaestio Disputata: Delayed Hominization--A Rejoinder To Thomas Shannon, Mark Johnson Dec 1997

Quaestio Disputata: Delayed Hominization--A Rejoinder To Thomas Shannon, Mark Johnson

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Thomas Shannon's response to my article ranges over our disagreements, but the core disagreement, the one with the heaviest moral fallout, concerns the unity or individuality of the preimplantation embryo. One's position here largely dictates whether its manipulation or destruction is morally licit. That core disagreement is the focus of this rejoinder.

How To Be Popular In Six Easy Steps And Other Lies They Told Us: Creating A Script Collaboratively, Andrea Nichelle Harris Weir Dec 1997

How To Be Popular In Six Easy Steps And Other Lies They Told Us: Creating A Script Collaboratively, Andrea Nichelle Harris Weir

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this creative thesis was to examine the process of cooperatively creating and performing an original nonlinear play script with an all woman company. Several theories of post-modern theatrical scripting and staging were incorporated into the production. All participants--actors, director and designers--worked on creating a script for performance in a studio space. Media images of women in the late 1950s and early 1960s provided the subject matter for the script. The performance was evaluated by three women from different fields of study. By virtue of their written responses, the production's outcome was viewed as successful in both process …

The Narrow And Shallow Bite Of Romer And The Eminent Rationality Of Dual-Gender Marriage: A (Partial) Response To Professor Koppelman, Richard F. Duncan Dec 1997

The Narrow And Shallow Bite Of Romer And The Eminent Rationality Of Dual-Gender Marriage: A (Partial) Response To Professor Koppelman, Richard F. Duncan

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

In this response to Professor Koppelman, Professor Duncan takes issue with the assertions Koppelman makes in Romer v. Evans and Invidious Intent. Though Duncan agrees with Koppelman's summary of the rule of Romer and the ongoing effects of Bowers v. Hardwick, he rejects Koppelman's claims that laws that discriminate against gays will always be constitutionally doubtful because they disadvantage an unpopular class.

Duncan claims that Koppelman has tried, without success or authority, to fill in the "missing pages" left in Romer by the Supreme Court. Finally, he argues that traditional marriage laws are valid and will survive under Romer and …

Justice George Sutherland And Economic Liberty: Constitutional Conservatism And The Problem Of Factions, Samuel R. Olken Dec 1997

Justice George Sutherland And Economic Liberty: Constitutional Conservatism And The Problem Of Factions, Samuel R. Olken

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

Most scholars have viewed Justice George Sutherland as a conservative jurist who opposed government regulation because of his adherence to laissez-faire economics and Social Darwinism, or because of his devotion to natural rights. In this Article, Professor Olken analyzes these widely held misperceptions of Justice Sutherland's economic liberty jurisprudence, which was based not on socio-economic theory, but on historical experience and common law. Justice Sutherland, consistent with the judicial conservatism of the Lochner era, wanted to protect individual rights from the whims of political factions and changing democratic majorities. The Lochner era differentiation between government regulations enacted for the public …

The Equal Protection Clause: A Note On The (Non)Relationship Between Romer V. Evans And Hunter V. Erickson, Jay S. Bybee Dec 1997

The Equal Protection Clause: A Note On The (Non)Relationship Between Romer V. Evans And Hunter V. Erickson, Jay S. Bybee

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

In this Article, Professor Bybee uses the debate surrounding Romer v. Evans to reexamine the Supreme Court's decision in Hunter v. Erickson and the principle that a political majority may not restructure the political process to make it more difficult for a political minority to obtain favorable government action. Professor Bybee explains the questionable bases of Hunter and succeeding cases, and then turns to the Romer decision and discusses its incongruity with Hunter. After analyzing the meaning of Romer in light of Hunter and other "equal process" cases, Professor Bybee concludes that although the Court's analysis of Colorado's Amendment 2 …

Nothing And Everything: Race, Romer, And (Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual) Rights, Robert S. Chang, Jerome Mccristal Culp Jr. Dec 1997

Nothing And Everything: Race, Romer, And (Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual) Rights, Robert S. Chang, Jerome Mccristal Culp Jr.

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

In this Article, Professors Chang and Culp propose that the Supreme Court's decision in Romer v. Evans, viewed by some scholars as a progressive case about gay/lesbian/bisexual rights, has little to do with gay/lesbian/bisexual rights as such. They argue that whatever protection Romer provides to gays, lesbians, and bisexuals is provided not because of *their sexuality but, rather, despite it. The authors demonstrate their thesis by examining the racial underpinnings of the Court's opinion, which begins with Justice Harlan's famous dissent in Plessy v. Ferguson and which relies on a specific vision of color-blindness. This submerged racial jurisprudence provides the …

Air-Snow Exchange Investigations At Summit, Greenland: An Overview, Jack E. Dibb, J L. Jaffrezo Nov 1997

Air-Snow Exchange Investigations At Summit, Greenland: An Overview, Jack E. Dibb, J L. Jaffrezo

Earth Sciences

The Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 (GISP2) and Greenland Ice Core Project (GRIP) deep drilling programs at Summit, Greenland included support (both logistical and scientific) of extensive investigation of atmospheric transport and air-snow exchange processes of gases and particles relevant to the interpretation of the ice-core records. Much of the sampling for the air-snow exchange investigations was conducted at a unique solar-powered camp 30 km southwest of the GISP2 drill camp (even further from the GRIP camp) and was characterized by a high degree of international collaboration and cooperation. The wide range of expertise and analytical capabilities of the 20-plus …

Faculty Publications

The 110,000‐year record of ammonium concentrations from the Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 (GISP2) ice core provides the basis for an analysis of terrestrial biological production and atmospheric circulation patterns involved in the transport of biologically produced ammonium to the Greenland atmosphere. The directly measured concentration series was selected for analysis, rather than that of estimated ammonium flux, after a detailed analysis of the relationship among ice core glaciochemical concentrations and a high‐resolution simultaneous record of snow accumulation from the GISP2 core. Analysis of the ammonium concentration series shows that maxima in background levels of ammonium in the Greenland atmosphere …

Faculty Publications

The Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 glaciochemical series (sodium, potassium, ammonium, calcium, magnesium, sulfate, nitrate, and chloride) provides a unique view of the chemistry of the atmosphere and the history of atmospheric circulation over both the high latitudes and mid‐low latitudes of the northern hemisphere. Interpretation of this record reveals a diverse array of environmental signatures that include the documentation of anthropogenically derived pollutants, volcanic and biomass burning events, storminess over marine surfaces, continental aridity and biogenic source strength plus information related to the controls on both high‐ and low‐frequency climate events of the last 110,000 years. Climate forcings investigated …

Faculty Publications

The recently collected Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 (GISP2) and Greenland Ice Core Project ice cores from Summit, Greenland, provide lengthy and highly resolved records of the deposition of both the aerosol (H2SO4) and silicate (tephra) components of past volcanism. Both types of data are very beneficial in developing the hemispheric to global chronology of explosive volcanism and evaluating the entire volcanism‐climate system. The continuous time series of volcanic SO42− for the last 110,000 years show a strong relationship between periods of increased volcanism and periods of climatic change. The greatest number of volcanic SO42− signals, many of very high …

The Effect Of Solution Composition On The Corrosion Behavior Of Electrodeposited Zinc Powder, Qingwen Li, Qin Yang, Xi Xia

Journal of Electrochemistry

Zinc powder as a widely anode material can be electrowon from ZnCl2 or ZnO+KOH media. The properties of zinc powder are likely to be modified with electrolytic conditions such as the composition of bath solution, electrolysis manner, current density and additives etc.. In this paper, we have discussed the effect of the compositions of bath solution on the microstructure and corrosion resistance of zinc powder.

The Activity Of Alloy Cu-Ni Electrode In Electroreduction Of Aromatic Nitro-Compounds, Chunan Ma, Shaoping Tong, Xiaojun Cheng, Hui Wang Nov 1997

The Activity Of Alloy Cu-Ni Electrode In Electroreduction Of Aromatic Nitro-Compounds, Chunan Ma, Shaoping Tong, Xiaojun Cheng, Hui Wang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Cu-Ni alloy on the basis of copper at different ratio Cu/Ni are prepared by codepostion. The cathode activtiy of film are studied by steady-state polarization for electroreduction nitro-benzene (NB) and 1,5-dinitroanthraquinone (1,5-DNA) to p-aminophenol and 1,5-diamino-4,8-dihydroanthraquinone respectly. The results show that the alloy cathodes at different ratio Cu/Ni have different exchange current density (io) and apparent activition energy (EA). The alloy (CN-30) has maximal io and minimal EA by codeposition at the following conditions: electrolyte: 0.05 mol/L CuSO4·5H2O+0.6 mol/L NiSO4·6H2O+0.25 mol/L Na3Cit·2H2O; …

The Initial Process Of Amophous Electroless Nickel, Yi Chi, Lei Zhang, Yijan Wang, Maoyuan Ma Nov 1997

The Initial Process Of Amophous Electroless Nickel, Yi Chi, Lei Zhang, Yijan Wang, Maoyuan Ma

Journal of Electrochemistry

The initial process and mophology of electroless nickel played a domination role in adhesive strenghth of EN coating. The structure of initial deposits on certain matrixes was observed by TEM analysis. The deposition of a extremaly fine grain film depended on relative contrast between a coating and a matrix in crystal lattice parameters. When the coating and matrix had similar srystal lattice parameters. A extremely fine grain film was obtained. On the contrary, when the crystal lattice parameters were very different, a amorphous structure was observed.

A Statistical Treatment Of The Gamma-Ray Burst "No Host Galaxy" Issue, Dieter H. Hartmann, David L. Band Nov 1997

A Statistical Treatment Of The Gamma-Ray Burst "No Host Galaxy" Issue, Dieter H. Hartmann, David L. Band

Publications

Various burst origin scenarios require a host object in the burst error box or near a well-located position. For example, a host galaxy should be present in the standard cosmological models. We present a methodology which evaluates whether the observed detections and nondetections of potential host objects in burst error boxes are consistent with the presence of the host, or whether all the detections can be attributed to background objects (e.g., unrelated background galaxies). The host object’s flux distribution must be modeled. Preliminary results are presented for the “minimal” cosmological model.
