Bound Μ⁺Μˉ System, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Gerhard Soff, Vladimir G. Ivanov, Savely Karshenboim Dec 1997

Bound Μ⁺Μˉ System, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Gerhard Soff, Vladimir G. Ivanov, Savely Karshenboim

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We consider the hyperfine structure, the atomic spectrum, and the decay channels of the bound μ+μ- system (dimuonium). The annihilation lifetimes of low-lying atomic states of the system lie in the 10-12 s range. The decay rates could be measured by detection of the decay products (high-energy photons or electron-positron pairs). The hyperfine-structure splitting of the dimuonic system and its decay rate are influenced by electronic vacuum polarization effects in the far timelike asymptotic region. This constitutes a previously unexplored kinematic regime. We evaluate next-to-leading-order radiative corrections to the decay rate of low-lying atomic states. We …

Pseudogap And Incommensurate Magnetic Fluctuations In Yba2cu3o6.6, Pengcheng Dai, Herbert A. Mook, Fatih Dogan Dec 1997

Pseudogap And Incommensurate Magnetic Fluctuations In Yba2cu3o6.6, Pengcheng Dai, Herbert A. Mook, Fatih Dogan

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Unpolarized inelastic neutron scattering is used to study the temperature and wave vector dependence of the dynamical magnetic susceptibility X"(q,w) of a well-characterized single-crystal YBa2Cu3O6.6 (Tc = 62.7 K). We find that a pseudogap opens in the spin-fluctuation spectrum at temperatures well above Tc. We speculate that the appearance of the low-frequency incommensurate fluctuations is associated with the opening of the pseudogap. To within the error of the measurements, a gap in the spin-fluctuation spectrum is found in the superconducting state.

Absolute Measurements Of The High-Frequency Magnetic Dynamics In Hihg-Tc Superconductors, Stephen M. Hayden, Gabriel Aeppli, Pengcheng Dai, Herbert A. Mook, Toby G. Perring, S-W Cheong, Zachary Fisk, Fatih Dogan, Thomas E. Mason

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We review recent measurements of the high-frequency dynamic magnetic susceptibility in the high-T~ superconducting systems La2-xSrxCuO4 and YBa2Cu3O6+x. Experiments were performed using the chopper spectrometers HET and MARI at the ISIS spallation source. We have placed our measurements on an absolute intensity scale; this allows systematic trends to be seen and comparisons with theory to be made. We find that the insulating S = ½ antiferromagnetic parent compounds show a dramatic renormalization of the spin wave intensity. The effect of doping on the response is to cause broadenings in …

Curbing Urban Traffic Congestion In Singapore: A Comprehensive Review, Rex S. Toh, Sock-Yong Phang Dec 1997

Curbing Urban Traffic Congestion In Singapore: A Comprehensive Review, Rex S. Toh, Sock-Yong Phang

Research Collection School Of Economics

One of the most pervasive and frustrating of modern transportation problems is urban traffic congestion. Since 1975, Singapore has introduced a relentless series of traditional and experimental measures to slow down the growth of the motor vehicle population and to control its usage. While some of the measures have been somewhat successful, some of the problems were shifted or were substituted. The Area Licensing Scheme led to a shifting of the problem in time and place while the quota system has substituted uncertainty in quantity with uncertainty in price. Furthermore, the Preferential Additional Registration Fee system and the Quota System …

Civil Society In Palestine: A Palestine Profile, Shadia Kanaan Dec 1997

Civil Society In Palestine: A Palestine Profile, Shadia Kanaan

Masters Theses

One definition of civil society dominated all theoretical and historical perspectives when it comes to the special case of civil society in Palestine. "Civil society is concerned with a society's total self re-producing ability through its inner strength in a manner that is distinct from the state" (Bishara 1995, 143). The hypothesis of this work is that civil society in Palestine existed and flourished in spite the absence of a national state and had played a fundamental role in the social and economic development of Palestinian society throughout its history. Civil society in Palestine poses an exception to the theory …

A Strategic Marketing Plan For Welltech International, Renee Denlow

Theses

It's here, and whether you know it or not, you are getting swept away by a strong underlying current of the "digital revolution ." For many, life has become an inoperative treadmill on the loose, for the pace gets quicker and more challenging. How often do you find yourself or the people surrounding you saying, "Fax me the draft, so I can review it prior to tomorrow's meeting.," "Leave me a message on my car phone," and/or "e-mail me the latest statistics before noon?" Electronic mail (E-mail) is just one of many of the technologies that is changing the landscape …

Phylogenetic Analysis Of The Subtribe Rutelina And Revision Of The Rutela Generic Groups (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae: Rutelini), Mary Liz Jameson Dec 1997

Phylogenetic Analysis Of The Subtribe Rutelina And Revision Of The Rutela Generic Groups (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae: Rutelini), Mary Liz Jameson

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

This work provides a comprehensive review of the phylogeny and classification of the subtribe Rutelina and a revision of the genus Rutela (Rutelina). Because of the lack of a thorough study of all taxa in the subtribe and because of differing philosophies regarding categorical levels, the classification of the subtribe is currently unstable. Phylogenetic analyses of 32 representative genera or subgenera in the tribe Rutelini were conducted as a means of: (1) resolving classification conflicts within the subtribe Rutelina, (2) identifying monophyletic groups within the subtribe, and (3) identifying monophyletic lineages within the tribe Rutelini. Analyses were conducted using 128 …

Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus Replicates In Testicular Germ Cells, Alters Spermatogenesis, And Induces Germ Cell Death By Apoptosis, Jung-Hyang Sur, Alan R. Doster, James S. Christian, Judith A. Galeota, Robert W. Wills, Jeff J. Zimmerman, Fernando A. Osorio

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Like other arteriviruses, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is shed in semen, a feature that is critical for the venereal transmission of this group of viruses. In spite of its epidemiological importance, little is known of the association of PRRSV or other arteriviruses with gonadal tissues. We experimentally infected a group of boars with PRRSV 12068-96, a virulent field strain. By combined use of in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry, we detected infection by PRRSV in the testes of these boars. The PRRSV testicular replication in testis centers on two types of cells: (i) epithelial germ cells of the …

Evolution Of The Schistosomes (Digenea: Schistosomatoidea): The Origin Of Dioecy And Colonization Of The Venous System, Thomas R. Platt, Daniel R. Brooks Dec 1997

Evolution Of The Schistosomes (Digenea: Schistosomatoidea): The Origin Of Dioecy And Colonization Of The Venous System, Thomas R. Platt, Daniel R. Brooks

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Trematodes of the family Schistosomatidae are considered venous system specialists whose sister group is the vascular system generalists (Spirorchidae) of turtles. Colonization of homeotherms by vascular trematodes required precision egg laying near the conduit for egg passage to the external environment and avoidance of pathogenesis that might result in the premature death of the host. Evolution of dioecy from the hermaphroditic condition may have proceeded through androdioecy in which hermaphrodites were specialized for precision egg placement in the vascular system and larger adults became functional males. The evolution of nuclear genes suppressing female function along with cytoplasmic genes suppressing male …

Limited Range Of Genetic Variation In Echinococcus Multilocularis, Heinz Rinder, Robert L. Rausch, Kenichi Takahashi, Hartmuth Kopp, Angelika Thomschke, Thomas Löscher Dec 1997

Limited Range Of Genetic Variation In Echinococcus Multilocularis, Heinz Rinder, Robert L. Rausch, Kenichi Takahashi, Hartmuth Kopp, Angelika Thomschke, Thomas Löscher

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

DNA sequencing of 1.3 kb of rDNA containing both internal transcribed spacers (ITS1, ITS2) and adjoining rRNA coding regions in each of 11 Echinococcus multilocularis isolates from Germany, Japan, and Alaska resulted in identical nucleotide sequences except for a single polymorphic locus 54 bp upstream of the 3' end of the 18S coding region, separating Eurasian isolates from an Alaskan isolate. The same base substitution was found in each of two additional isolates from Alaska. The distribution of the resulting genotypes with regard to their origin is highly significant (>99.9%) and corresponds to the traditional subspecies Echinococcus multilocularis multilocularis …

Jury Reform: Of Myths And Moral Panics, Peter Duff, Mark Findlay Dec 1997

Jury Reform: Of Myths And Moral Panics, Peter Duff, Mark Findlay

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

It is now commonplace to assert that the jury performs an important ideological or symbolic role in the criminal justice process. Indeed, it is often argued that this function is more significant than the impact the jury has in practice (see Mungham & Bankowski 1976; Duff & Findlay 1982; Findlay & Duff 1988: 1–7; Darbyshire 1991). Certainly it is true that, in virtually every jurisdiction where the jury exists, only a very small proportion of alleged offenders have their cases heard before a jury. There are two principal reasons for this. First, the vast majority of those charged with criminal …

Reflective Critical Inquiry On Critical Inquiry:A Critical Ethnographic Dilemma Continued, Barry Kanpol Dec 1997

Reflective Critical Inquiry On Critical Inquiry:A Critical Ethnographic Dilemma Continued, Barry Kanpol

The Qualitative Report

This manuscript argues that there is an intimate connection between a "critical" ethnographer's personal history and the data collected. The author traces elements in his personal life, such as school, religion, immigration and forms of discrimination, and connects dominant values within the above to the various studies he has conducted over the last decade. The author reflects back on how he may have unconsciously been seeing the everyday experiences of subjects he was studying as a reflection of his own personal experiences at various times in his life - all which relate to forms of institutional and cultural political resistance. …

Mixing Qualitative And Quantitative Methods In Sports Fan Research, Ian Jones Dec 1997

Mixing Qualitative And Quantitative Methods In Sports Fan Research, Ian Jones

The Qualitative Report

Sports fandom consists of cognitive and affective, as well as behavioural components. Existing sports fan research utilises either strong qualitative, or more often, strong quantitative methodologies. The strengths and weaknesses of each approach are outlined, developing the argument that the use of a single methodology often fails to explore all of these components. The use of a mixed methods approach is suggested to counteract this weakness and to enhance research into the sports fan.

Encouraging Marketing Research, Ronald B. Larson Dec 1997

Encouraging Marketing Research, Ronald B. Larson

Journal of Extension

Some business people are unfamiliar with the need for or the benefits from marketing research. One tool for communicating the value of marketing and marketing research is regional sales indices. These indices can help highlight market heterogeneity, illustrate marketing complexities, and encourage the use of regional events. They can also be used to help identify potential marketing partners, guide test market selection, and assist with volume forecasting. By including analyses of these sales development indices in presentations to business groups, greater interest in conducting marketing research and in supporting marketing programs may be generated.

The study analyzed why minority contractors were not bidding on federally-funded jobs. The objectives were to find out why, what were their needs and to design an educational program. Data included a survey completed by 22 minority contractors. Literature was reviewed and local resource persons were interviewed. Conclusions were that minority contractors faced racial discrimination, lacked successful role models and a networking system, had little training in business skills, and lacked knowledge concerning banking. They lacked capital, equipment, workers, insurance and bonding. Recommendations were for professionals to receive diversity training and host a reception to meet minority contractors. Contractors should …

Locality-Based Programming: Virginia Tech's Powell River Project, Carl E. Zipper, Jonathan S. Rockett Dec 1997

Locality-Based Programming: Virginia Tech's Powell River Project, Carl E. Zipper, Jonathan S. Rockett

Journal of Extension

The Powell River Project (PRP) is a Virginia Tech program that applies the land-grant research-Extension model to non-traditional program areas. PRP sponsors research and education programs to benefit the people of Virginia's coal-producing region. Funding is provided by industry, the University, and the state. A Board of Directors establishes priorities and allocates funds, a staff solicits research proposals and disseminates research results, and University personnel conduct sponsored activities. A variety of factors indicate program success, including influence on industry environmental protection practices and regulatory standards. Keys to success include local involvement, a multidisciplinary approach, and strong research-Extension links.

Integrating Extension In Natural Resources Graduate Education, Stephen B. Jones, James C. Finley Dec 1997

Integrating Extension In Natural Resources Graduate Education, Stephen B. Jones, James C. Finley

Journal of Extension

Traditionally graduate education is defined by a research project and is often complemented by classroom or laboratory teaching experience. Too infrequently, graduate educators do not capitalize on promising opportunities associated with the university's Extension mission. The nature of informal education often draws Extension faculty to contentious and timely issues that are characterized by either technology voids or awareness/knowledge shortfalls. Using case studies the article characterizes the research that is appropriate, describes the type of graduate students who may be attracted to this kind of project, and suggests a strategy for partnering and grantsmanship.

Religion And Politics In Nigeria From 1841-1845: An Essay On Church-State Relationship, Agbonkhianmeghe E. Orobator

Theology Faculty Research and Publications
