Faster Muse Csp Arc Consistency Algorithms, Mary P. Harper, Christopher M. White, Randall A. Helzerman, Stephen A. Hockema

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

MUSE CSP (Multiply SEgmented Constraint Satisfaction Problem) [5, 61 is an extension to the constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) which is especially useful for problems that segment into riultiple instances of CSP that share variables. In Belzerman and Harper [6], the concepts of MUSE node, arc, and path consistency were defined and algorithms for MUSE arc consistency, MUSE AC-1, and MUSE path consistency were developed. MUSE AC-1 is similar to the CSP arc consistency algorithm AC-4 [ l j ] . Recently, Bessikre developed a new algorithm, AC-6 [I], which has the same worst-case running time as AC-4 and is faster …

A Model For Leakage Control By Mos Transistlor Stacking, Mark C. Johnson, Dinesh Somasekhar, Kaushik Roy Dec 1997

A Model For Leakage Control By Mos Transistlor Stacking, Mark C. Johnson, Dinesh Somasekhar, Kaushik Roy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Prevailing CMOS design practice has been very conservative with regard to choice of transistor threshold voltage, so as to avoid the difficult problems of threshold variations and high leakage currclnts. It is becoming necessary to scale threshold voltages more aggress~vely in order to obtain further power reduction, performance improven~ent, and integration density. Substantial leakage reduction can be achi~ved in single Vt designs by stacking low \.'t transistors. We have derived a simplified theoretical model which predicts the quiescent leakage current and the worst case time required to settle to quiescent levels in a single stack of transistors. This model can …

Supremum Distribution Of Gaussian Processes And Queueing Analysis Including Long-Range Dependence And Self-Similarity, Jinwoo Choe, Ness B. Shroff Dec 1997

Supremum Distribution Of Gaussian Processes And Queueing Analysis Including Long-Range Dependence And Self-Similarity, Jinwoo Choe, Ness B. Shroff

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this report we study the supremum distribution of a general class of Gaussian processes {Xt : t 2 0) having stationary increments. This distribution is directly related to the steady state queue length distribution of a queueing system, and hence its study is also important for various applications including communication network analysis. Our study is based on Extreme Value Theory and we show that log P({s~p~X:>t ~> x)) + asymptotically grows at most (on the order of) log x, where m, corresponds to the reciprocal of the maximum (normalized) variance of Xt. This result is considerably stronger than …

The Easy Case Of The Priority Of Secured Claims In Bankruptcy, Steven L. Schwarcz Dec 1997

The Easy Case Of The Priority Of Secured Claims In Bankruptcy, Steven L. Schwarcz

Duke Law Journal

For years, scholars have questioned the efficiency of secured debt, many suggesting that it transfers uncompensated risk to unsecured creditors. However, prior writing on the value of secured debt ignores the distinction between the use and the availability of secured credit. As a result, previous models of secured debt erroneously assume that a debtor that can borrow on an unsecured basis will nevertheless borrow on a secured basis to reduce interest cost. This Article combines theory, experience, and empirical tests to show that earlier models do not reflect the expected behavior of an economically rational debtor. These models fail to …

Temperature-Dependence Studies Of Photorefractive Effect In A Low Glass-Transition-Temperature Polymer Composite, Bogdan Swedek, Ning Cheng, Yiping Cui, Jaroslaw W. Zieba, Jeffrey G. Winiarz, Paras N. Prasad Dec 1997

Temperature-Dependence Studies Of Photorefractive Effect In A Low Glass-Transition-Temperature Polymer Composite, Bogdan Swedek, Ning Cheng, Yiping Cui, Jaroslaw W. Zieba, Jeffrey G. Winiarz, Paras N. Prasad

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The temperature dependence of the photorefractive effect in a polymer composite containing poly(9-vinycarbazole), tricresyl phosphate, buckminsterfullerene, and 4-(N,N-diethylamino)-β-nitrostyrene is presented. The photoconductive, electro-optic and photorefractive properties of the material have been studied in the temperature range of 22-61°C. An apparent increase of electro-optic modulation with temperature and its eventual saturation is observed. This behavior is attributed to the temperature activated orientational mobility of the second-order nonlinear chromophores. The polarization anisotropy between the p- and s-polarized readouts is consistent with what would be expected on the basis of directly measured effective electro-optic coefficients. By correlating the electro-optic value with the diffraction …

Preliminary Investigation Of The Extent And Effects Of Sediment Contamination In White Lake Near Whitehall Leather Tannery, Richard Rediske, Gary Fahnenstiel, Tom Nalepa, Peter Meier, Claire Schelske Dec 1997

Preliminary Investigation Of The Extent And Effects Of Sediment Contamination In White Lake Near Whitehall Leather Tannery, Richard Rediske, Gary Fahnenstiel, Tom Nalepa, Peter Meier, Claire Schelske

Scientific Technical Reports

By using a combination of chemistry, toxicological evaluation, ecological analysis, and radiodating, this investigation has defined the ecological effects and the nature and extent of sediment contamination in the Tannery Bay area of eastern White Lake. The sediments in Tannery Bay represent a source of chromium transport for most of the eastern basin of White Lake. The recent deposition of chromium contaminated sediments exceeding 500 mg/kg in down gradient locations shows that export processes are responsible for the movement of this material from Tannery Bay. Arsenic and mercury appear to be less mobile and are retained in the sediments of …

Stock Market And Macroeconomic Policies: New Evidence For The Pacific Basin Countries, Unro Lee Dec 1997

Stock Market And Macroeconomic Policies: New Evidence For The Pacific Basin Countries, Unro Lee

Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles

This article investigates whether the stock markets of the Pacific Basin countries of Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan are informationally efficient with respect to macroeconomic policies. Granger causality tests are utilized in the context of a Vector Error Correction Model to test the relationship between aggregate stock prices and monetary and fiscal policies. The findings indicate that the stock markets of all four countries are not efficient with respect to both macroeconomic policies. These findings are different from those of other articles focusing on major industrialized countries. Rejection of market efficiency may be attributed to the unique structure …

Drug Use Among Female High School Senior Students In Michigan: An Application Of Social Bond Theory, Halime Unal

Masters Theses

Drug use is a serious problem affecting the American adolescents today. The focus of this study was the relationship between the elements of social bond and drug use among female high school senior students. The elements of social bond were peer pressure, commitment to school, and the importance of religious belief. Drugs investigated in this study were cigarette, alcohol and marijuana. This study included the total population of female senior students during the 1994-95 academic year in Michigan who participated in the Michigan Alcohol and'Other Drugs School Survey (MAOD).

In order to test the relationship between the elements of social …

The Biography Of A Scale: Contextual Factors That Influence The Measurement Of Family Functioning, Ludwig Geismar Dec 1997

The Biography Of A Scale: Contextual Factors That Influence The Measurement Of Family Functioning, Ludwig Geismar

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The subject of instrument relevance is addressed by examining issues that have arisen in the use of a single scale over a forty year period. The issues revolve around the impact of varying social conditions, changing ethos, differential respondent receptiveness, and evolving research technology. Extended use of an instrument, it is argued, yields information that transcends the conventional techniques for testing instrument adequacy. The lack of opportunities in social work for accessing information on extended use of measurement tools is due, among other factors, to a preoccupation with working on subjects that are new and original and to a lack …

Eco Maps: A Tool To Bridge The Practice-Research Gap, Rena D. Harold, Lucy R. Mercier, Lisa G. Colarossi

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The social work profession has played host to a continuing dialogue about the interplay between research and practice. Traditionally, practitioners collect data that have real-world usefulness and are relevant to the intervention process with particular clients. Researchers, on the other hand, are skilled in designing and conducting studies that result in data that can be generalized to build the profession's foundation of knowledge. Data collection tools and techniques that are both relevant to practice and germane to knowledge-building are needed. This paper demonstrates the use of the eco map, a common practice tool, to collect and organize data about families, …

New Communitarian Thought And The Future Of Social Policy, John Mcnutt Dec 1997

New Communitarian Thought And The Future Of Social Policy, John Mcnutt

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Communitarian thought is an emerging force in American social policy in the 1990s. Communitarians see the breakdown of community and morality as the major problem of our society. They conclude that rampant individualism is the cause of this breakdown. Communitarians propose reforms that will limit rampant individualism and restore our communities and institutions. In these proposals are threats to social justice, as well as positive elements that social workers can endorse. This paper reviews and critiques the communitarian position and suggests ways that social workers can use this new force to advance the cause of social justice.
