Actuarial Model Assumptions For Australian Inflation, Equity Returns, And Interest Rates, Michael Sherris Jan 1997

Actuarial Model Assumptions For Australian Inflation, Equity Returns, And Interest Rates, Michael Sherris

Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)

Though actuaries have developed several types of stochastic investment models for inflation, stock market returns, and interest rates, there are two commonly used in practice: autoregressive time series models with normally distributed errors, and autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (ARCH) models. ARCH models are particularly suited when there is heteroscedasticity in inflation and interest rate series. In such cases nonnormal residuals are found in the empirical data. This paper examines whether Australian univariate inflation and interest rate data are consistent with autoregressive time series and ARCH model assumptions.

Institutional Missions, Multiple Faculty Roles: Implications For Faculty Development, Ann E. Austin, Joseph J. Brocato, Jonathan D. Rohrer Jan 1997

Institutional Missions, Multiple Faculty Roles: Implications For Faculty Development, Ann E. Austin, Joseph J. Brocato, Jonathan D. Rohrer

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

The authors review the context in which the topic of faculty roles is gaining attention, draw on data from a qualitative study of how faculty construct their roles, and argue that faculty developers and other institutional leaders should consider expanding the scope of faculty development activities in ways that support faculty across the full breadth of their roles. The article concludes by suggesting that faculty developers ask questions about faculty roles in the institutional context and "map" faculty development opportunities to ensure that multiple roles are supported.

Small Group Techniques: Selecting And Developing Activities Based On Stages Of Group Development, Sandra A. Harris, Kathryn J. Watson

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Research shows that active and cooperative learning activities can be effective teaching methods; however, developing and carrying out these practices is often challenging, perhaps even confusing and frustrating, to educators who have not been trained in group processes. This article reviews basic principles for using group techniques in college classrooms, describes the developmental stages of groups, and provides examples of activities and assignments as well as processes for reflection and evaluation.

Teaching Improvement Consultation For Teaching On Television, Joyce Povlacs Lunde, Myra S. Wilhite Jan 1997

Teaching Improvement Consultation For Teaching On Television, Joyce Povlacs Lunde, Myra S. Wilhite

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Instructional consultants have traditionally offered individual consultation to faculty members on their campuses to improve teaching and learning. This kind of consultation to improve teaching is also valuable for those teaching on television, but consultants may need to prepare themselves in learning technologies and distance education in order to help faculty offering instruction via television. In addition, the phases of initial interview, data-gathering, data feedback, implementation, and evaluation, which constitute a process often used to improve teaching, need to be expanded to address teaching over television.

The Impact Of Comprehensive Institutional Assessment On Faculty, Tracey Sutherland, James Guffey Jan 1997

The Impact Of Comprehensive Institutional Assessment On Faculty, Tracey Sutherland, James Guffey

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

In this age of accountability, colleges and universities are being called on to provide evidence of their effectiveness. As a result, comprehensive assessment initiatives are being implemented on most campuses, requiring increasing numbers of faculty to become involved. Beginning with an overview of a faculty-driven assessment model, this article describes specific roles faculty play and the results of a study in which faculty describe how their involvement influences their teaching and professional development. The primary purpose of faculty development is to improve the learning environment. Faculty participation in institutional assessment efforts enhances that environment. The results of the study provide …

Allotment, Alcohol, And The Omahas, Benson Tong Jan 1997

Allotment, Alcohol, And The Omahas, Benson Tong

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

"The welfare of the Omaha is close to my heart ... I am living among them and I know what I am writing about," wrote Noah La Flesche in a 1916 letter to the Superintendent of the Omaha School, the field official in charge of the Omaha agency. In a passionate tone, La Flesche went on to plead: "If we had a man who would take the drunken Indian, fine him, put him in jail till he sobered up, drinking would not be so bad. This is going to ruin the Omaha. I ask you to help us ... we …

An Intercomparison Of Two Tunable Diode Laser Spectrometers Used For Eddy Correlation Measurements Of Methane Flux In A Prairie Wetland, David P. Billesbach, Joon Kim, R.J. Clement, S.B Verman, F.G. Ullman Jan 1997

An Intercomparison Of Two Tunable Diode Laser Spectrometers Used For Eddy Correlation Measurements Of Methane Flux In A Prairie Wetland, David P. Billesbach, Joon Kim, R.J. Clement, S.B Verman, F.G. Ullman

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

An intercomparison was made between two tunable diode laser spectrometers used to measure methane fluxes by the eddy correlation technique at a prairie wetland site. The spectrometers were built by Unisearch Associates Inc. of Concord, Ontario, Canada, and Campbell Scientific Inc. of Logan, Utah, and were models EMS-50 and TGA-100, respectively. The fluxes were found to agree very well with each other in the range of 0 to 42 mg 􏰑 m-2 h-1.

The TGA-100 was observed to exhibit offset drifts. Most of the time, when the offset was only slowly changing (as compared to the eddy correlation averaging time), …

Review Of Voices Of The Plains Cree By Edward Ahenakew, Jennifer S. Brown Jan 1997

Review Of Voices Of The Plains Cree By Edward Ahenakew, Jennifer S. Brown

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Voices of the Plains Cree was first published in 1973 by McClelland & Stewart. As it has been out of print for some time, the Canadian Plains Research Center has rendered useful service in once again making this important book available in a new edition with striking and attractive cover artwork by Allen Sapp.

In the 1920s, Edward Ahenakew, a Saskatchewan Cree ordained into the Anglican priesthood in 1912, quietly began to write down the memories and legends told to him by Chief Thunderchild (Peyasiw-awasis, also known as Kapitikow), then living on Onion Lake Reserve (Saskatchewan). Thunderchild, a follower of …

Dynamic Visual Acuity And Batting Success, Randall John Wee Jan 1997

Dynamic Visual Acuity And Batting Success, Randall John Wee

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of the paper was to describe the relationship between dynamic visual acuity (DVA) and baseball batting success. DVA is the ability to distinguish detail when there is movement between participant, and/or test object, or both. DVA is affected by object size, speed, and eye movement patterns and DVA affects information processing, reaction time, and tracking skills. Information processing includes identification and interpretation of the situation along with selection and preparation of the correct motor response. Tracking involves following a moving object with the proper eye movements. A descriptive approach was used to review the literature related to DVA …

Phosphorylation Within The Amino-Terminal Acidic Domain I Of The Phosphoprotein Of Vesicular Stomatitis Virus Is Required For Transcription But Not For Replication, Asit K. Pattnaik, Leroy Hwang, Tong Le, Nathan Englund, Manjula Mathur, Tapas Das, Amiya Banerjee

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Phosphorylation by casein kinase II at three specific residues (S-60, T-62, and S-64) within the acidic domain I of the P protein of Indiana serotype vesicular stomatitis virus has been shown to be critical for in vitro transcription activity of the viral RNA polymerase (P-L) complex. To examine the role of phosphorylation of P protein in transcription as well as replication in vivo, we used a panel of mutant P proteins in which the phosphate acceptor sites in domain I were substituted with alanines or other amino acids. Analyses of the alanine-substituted mutant P proteins for the ability to support …

Statistical Modeling Of Agricultural Chemical Occurrence In Midwestern Rivers, William A. Battaglin, Donald A. Goolsby Jan 1997

Statistical Modeling Of Agricultural Chemical Occurrence In Midwestern Rivers, William A. Battaglin, Donald A. Goolsby

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Agricultural chemicals in surface water may constitute a human health risk or have adverse effects on aquatic life. Recent research on unregulated rivers in the midwestern USA documents that elevated concentrations of herbicides occur for 1–4 months following application in late spring and early summer. In contrast, nitrate concentrations in unregulated rivers are elevated during fall, winter, and spring months. Natural and anthropogenic variables of river drainage basins, such as soil permeability, amount of agricultural chemicals applied, or percentage of land planted in corn, affect agricultural chemical concentration and mass transport in rivers.

Presented is an analysis of selected data …

Three-Dimensional Upper Crustal Velocity Structure Beneath San Francisco Peninsula, California, Tom Parsons, Mary Lou Zoback Jan 1997

Three-Dimensional Upper Crustal Velocity Structure Beneath San Francisco Peninsula, California, Tom Parsons, Mary Lou Zoback

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

This paper presents new seismic data from, and crustal models of the San Francisco Peninsula. In much of central California the San Andreas fault juxtaposes the Cretaceous granitic Salinian terrane on its west and the Late Mesozoic/Early Tertiary Franciscan Complex on its east. On San Francisco Peninsula, however, the present-day San Andreas fault is completely within a Franciscan terrane, and the Pilarcitos fault, located southwest of the San Andreas, marks the Salinian-Franciscan boundary. This circumstance has evoked two different explanations: either the Pilarcitos is a thrust fault that has pushed Franciscan rocks over Salinian rocks or the Pilarcitos is a …

Estimation Of Surface Snow Properties Using Combined Millimeter-Wave Backscatter And Near-Infrared Reflectance Measurements, Ram M. Narayanan, Sandy R. Jackson Jan 1997

Estimation Of Surface Snow Properties Using Combined Millimeter-Wave Backscatter And Near-Infrared Reflectance Measurements, Ram M. Narayanan, Sandy R. Jackson

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Knowledge of surficial snow properties such as grain size, surface roughness, and free-water content provides clues to the metamorphic state of snow on the ground, which in turn yields information on weathering processes and climatic activity. Remote sensing techniques using combined concurrent measurements of near-infrared passive reflectance and millimeter-wave radar backscatter show promise in estimating the above snow parameters. Near-infrared reflectance is strongly dependent on snow grain size and free-water content, while millimeter-wave backscatter is primarily dependent on free-water content and, to some extent, on the surface roughness. A neural-network based inversion algorithm has been developed that optimally combines near-infrared …

Paradigm Shifts And Tapeworm Systematics, Eric P. Hoberg, Scott Lyell Gardner, Ronald A. Campbell

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The phylogeny of tapeworms provided the focus for the 2nd International Workshop for Tapeworm Systematics, which led to the development of novel hypotheses from the ordinal to the species level for taxa of the Eucestoda. Conceptual roots for this meeting emanated from discussions initiated during the Ist Workshop chaired by Claude Vaucher and Jean Mariaux at the Museum of Natural History, Geneva in 1993.

Coccidia From Bats (Chiroptera) Of The World: A New Eimeria Species In Pipistrellus Javanicus From Japan, Donald W. Duszynski Jan 1997

Coccidia From Bats (Chiroptera) Of The World: A New Eimeria Species In Pipistrellus Javanicus From Japan, Donald W. Duszynski

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Fecal samples from 56 Japanese bats representing 6 species in 2 families were examined for coccidian oocysts. Two of the 56 (< 4%) were infected with coccidia; however, only 1 animal was infected with sufficient numbers of sporulated oocysts to allow the description of a new species of Eimeria. Sporulated oocysts (n = 150) of this new species are subspheroidal, 20.3 x 18.1 (16-25 x 14-21) μm, with ellipsoidal sporocysts 10.6 x 6.6 (8-12 x 5-8) μm; this species occurred in 1 of 4 (25%) pipistrelles, Pipistrellus javanicus (Gray, 1838) (Vespertilionidae). Oocysts of another coccidium, also an Eimeria sp., were found in 1 of 3 (33%) horseshoe bats, Rhinolophus ferrumequinum (Schreber, 1774) (Rhinolophidae), but only 2 sporulated oocysts were seen, which is not enough …

Haplosporidium Nelsoni (Msx) Epizootic In The Piscataqua River Estuary (Maine/New Hampshire, U.S.A.), B. J. Barber, R. Langan, T. L. Howell Jan 1997

Haplosporidium Nelsoni (Msx) Epizootic In The Piscataqua River Estuary (Maine/New Hampshire, U.S.A.), B. J. Barber, R. Langan, T. L. Howell

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

A major epizootic of Haplosporidium nelsoni occurred during 1995 in the Piscataqua River Estuary, near the northern distributional limit of the parasite. Prevalence of H. nelsoni in samples of oysters, Crassostrea virginica, collected between 5 September and 18 December 1995 from sites in Maine and New Hampshire ranged from 15 to 81 %, with up to 50% systemic infections. Associated proportions of dead oysters ranged from 25 to 83%. The epizootic was most likely triggered by unusually warm and dry climatic conditions in 1995 that resulted in a temperature and salinity regime in the estuary that favored the parasite.

Parasite Biodiversity And Emerging Pathogens: A Role For Systematics In Limiting Impacts On Genetic Resources, Eric P. Hoberg Jan 1997

Parasite Biodiversity And Emerging Pathogens: A Role For Systematics In Limiting Impacts On Genetic Resources, Eric P. Hoberg

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Emergence of pathogenic organisms continues as a threat to overall biodiversity and genetic resources. Macroparasites including helminths constitute a potential threat to economically important resources in agriculture and conservation biology. Limitation of this threat can be achieved through survey and inventory for biodiversity and the application of systematics to understand the host range , biogeography and history of faunas. Systematics constitutes the foundation for recognition of endemic and introduced elements of faunas and the basis for predicting the behavior of pathogens introduced to new ecological settings or host groups. The basis for emergence of pathogens has both a deep historical …

Isoelectric Focusing Of Soluble Proteins In The Characterization Of Species And Isolates Of Nematodirus (Nematoda: Trichostrongyloidea), Lora G. Rickard, Eric P. Hoberg, Donna M. Mulrooney, Gary L. Zimmerman Jan 1997

Isoelectric Focusing Of Soluble Proteins In The Characterization Of Species And Isolates Of Nematodirus (Nematoda: Trichostrongyloidea), Lora G. Rickard, Eric P. Hoberg, Donna M. Mulrooney, Gary L. Zimmerman

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Isoelectric focusing was performed on extracts from Nematodirus spathiger, Nematodirus filicollis, Nematodirus helvetianus, and three geographic isolates of Nematodirus battus. Gender-specific differences were noted within species; however, the overall protein profile of each species and isolate was distinct and reproducible and allowed unequivocal differentiation. A coefficient of similarity (Sm) for males of each species and isolate was calculated, and a dendrogram, based on evaluation of Sm by the unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic means, was produced. Although cluster analysis of the three isolates of N. battus indicates the North American and Weybridge isolates are similar, interpretation …

Overstreet, Arun K. Dhar, Keith Astrofsky, William H. Carr, James Sweeney, Jeffrey M. Lotz

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Offspring of four crosses (I, II, III, and IV) of Penaeus vannamei from known high- and low-growth families were challenged with infectious hypodermal and hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHHNV) and Baculovirus penaei (BP) to compare their susceptibility to these viral agents and examine the genetic component involved in disease resistance or susceptibility. Family crosses were made using broodstock from five families developed by the U.S. Marine Shrimp Farming Program. The prevalence of IHHNV infection was highest in cross I and lowest in cross III. Cross I was developed using male and female broodstock from the low-growth family 1.6, and cross III …

Divergent Effects Of Job Control On Coping With Work Stressors: The Key Role Of Self-Efficacy, John Schaubroeck, Deryl E. Merritt

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

This study identifies job self-efficacy as a moderating variable that may determine whether job control contributes positively or negative to coping with work stressors. Data from two samples (health professionals and an occupationally diverse group) demonstrated similar interactions between demands, control, and self-efficacy predicting blood pressure. These results may reconcile the previous inconsistent and largely method-bound support for Karasek's job demands-control model and suggest that efforts to improve job self-efficacy may be as important to reducing the cardiovascular consequences of job stress as efforts to enhance control.

Policing Hatred: Police Bias Units And The Construction Of Hate Crime, Jeannine Bell Jan 1997

Policing Hatred: Police Bias Units And The Construction Of Hate Crime, Jeannine Bell

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Much of the scholarly debate about hate crime laws focuses on a discussion of their constitutionality under the First Amendment. Part of larger empirical study of police methods of investigating hate crimes, this Note attempts to shift thinking in this area beyond the existing debate over the constitutionality of hate crime legislation to a discussion of how low-level criminal justice personnel, such as the police, enforce hate crime laws. This Note argues that, since hate crimes are an area in which police have great discretion in enforcing the law, their understanding of the First Amendment and how it relates to …
